In this video, I talk about the Dulfersitz and South African Rappels, both of which are outdated but can still be used in emergency situations. For more information on similar techniques, check out my full tutorial on rappelling without a device: • Rappelling Without a D...

When you live on the top floor, only have one centralised stairwell for escape and a neighbour who consistently falls asleep with their oven on or sets the smoke alarm off daily, this is essential to my skill set.

I learned the first in the army and descended with it quite safely. Not comfortable, but fast, like when you need to climb down some stories in case of emergency.

Thank you! I keep my rope by the balcony in case of fire or earth quake. Your video has helped me brainstorm in case of real emergency, since I have a small dog and would want to save her more than anything else.

I imagine weird rescue situations where I'd be useless to help (like my child)...... But now I could at least go down to someone with just a rope. Great video.

i just want to say thankyou so much for this, i saw it a few months ago and while going back down a moutian i had climed there was one more ledge that i had to do and then it was just a little walk down, and my harness broke so i used the dulfersitz reppel and it worked but you were right i do have a massive rope burn on my hands from holding the rope, my back and shoulder. but just. THANK YOU !

re 1:18 Anyone who has used this Body, Dulfersitz, or Wrap rap knows it does matter (a lot!). The single strand Dulfersitz is much more painful/damaging, due to the severe concentration of force & heat on the clothing, (preferably leather, canvass, or sturdy cotton). re 1:47 Where the rope lifts his shirt, should never be allowed. The lines should go up along his butt crack (insulation) (NOT around your leg) and around his trunk above his hip crest and along his ribs, across his breast & collar bones to his shoulder top. He does not show it, but you control your rate of descent by moving your braking hand around your trunk toward your navel or beyond, adding friction surface, NOT by gripping tighter for more pressure! Don't slouch. Try to face the up-rope (not twisted as shown) to see your progress and footing. I recommend using a natural material shirt or preferably jacket with a collar.

In theory though if you use the double rope dulfersitz you could go balcony to balcony down a building , if you had 4 times the distance between floors yes no? but if you use a single rope it has to be tied off and once you reach the end of the rope your descent is over yes no?

Fascinating. So if u prepare with two pair of pants, a thick jacket, lets say for construction workers? Plus gloves and a lot of practise? Well it is worth practising.. Falling out of the rope with the first method would be slightly disturbing.

Never rappel of cliff in these methods. Only use them on steep slopes where you can use good footing on decent. South African method is not designed for being suspended

Yer just tie a stick or an umbrella or what ever u have to the rope on 1 end and then hook it over a bar or wall or what ever amd then sit on the stick lile a rope swing and the hold the other end and support your body weight and then ur away but i wud advise using quite think rope so u can get a grip on it 👍
