Lolll! Records were still around when I was a kid. The first record I bought with my own pocket money was the Flashdance soundrack! But cassettes were just around the corner, and the walk-man revolution basically killed records. I just loooove the crackling sounds they make.... All these changes in music formats in so little time. Kinda cool! Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

I don't know if it's true but always thought you should gently place the needle on the edge of the record in those groves before the recording starts and never let it drop like that in the middle. There are also blank grooves between the songs if you want to skip one.

Awwww thank you so much for memories like that - although I'm (only) 53, I remember getting a record player when I was very young and the first thing I was taught - was 'DO NOT' drop the needle onto the record...place it very gently onto edge - my nerves were shattered ha ha (you learn the cost of scratching if you don't) it's so funny though now how my grown up daughters say 'in the olden days' and yet vinyl is coming back around. I hope it brings you both as much Joy as it did me, lots of love x

So funny to see you two figuring out how to run a record player..lol. A FEW HELPFUL TIPS: There is a little lever to the left on the arm . This is where you use one finger to lift the arm and gently lay the needle at the beginning of the record. Hold the record without putting finger prints on the record. Never drag the needle across the record, this will create a scratch. When the needle goes over the scratch it will either do repetitive studder or will distort the sound everytime the needle hits the scratch. As a kid, this was our only source of music besides the radio. Then came the 8 track, cassettes, dvd,s. Enjoy your record player you two. This video brought back so many memories! I have saved two albums from my youth, Madman on The Water, Elton John and Abby Road, The Beatles. But don't have a record player anymore.

WOW did MY childhood come flooding back!!! I gave all my record albums(the big records with a collection of songs on it...like a cd.) to my childhood best friend about 2 yrs ago. It was all the music we listened to as teenagers. We both had a bedroom set which had two twin beds which fit together in a corner and had a corner table with a record player/am-fm radio in it. The beds had large bolstered pillows which went against the wall and made them like sofas. We thought we were the coolest!!! Looking back they were pretty handy. They had upholstered covers that fit over the beds like a lid on a box. I just about wore that record player out. The Christmas records you have remind me of when I was little and my parents listened to those songs. I love them all now! I love when Ollie get excited because y’all are getting a little rowdy! He doesn’t want to be left out! I pray that the whole Frey Life Family has a blessed Christmas full of love!!🎄🎄🎄❤️❤️❤️

Oh my gosh this is hysterical! I remember having record players when I was a kid and of course had albums (33 speed) and 45’s. Smaller records that had a song on one side and another on the other side. Side A & B. Side A was usually the better recording. Peter when you did the men’s meeting and were introduced by a Beatles song back in the day that’s what you could find them on. So the tables are turned. Mom & dad struggle to play music on their electronic devices and you two did a little struggling to learn how to use a record player. Sounded like you were reading a recipe. Funny! Unfortunately one of the drawbacks of album’s was that they did warp. But even 6 albums for $10 was a good deal. Btw, again, back in the day, Zenith was one of the leaders in manufacturing “electronic devices.” We called them record players! This video made me smile! Thanks!!

Peter: Do I raise it up to stop it? Me: NNNOOOOO!!! There is a lever next to the arm where it's attached to the unit. That raises and lowers the arm. Lift the lever, 'gently guide' the arm over the spot on the record where you want to start it playing, and lower the lever, again 'gently', to begin play. Reverse the process when you want to stop playing. Lift the lever, guide the arm, lower the arm and turn it off. There are three speeds a record plays at. The old Victrolas typically play at 78rpm (revolutions per minute), the large records at 33 1/3rpm, and the small records with the big hole at 45rmp. Always handle the records by the edges. Never touch the record itself. Always run the velvet cloth 'gently' over the record as it spins before playing. Any other questions, just ask us 'old folks'. You guys are a joy to watch!

ohh sweeties. there is usually a lift at the connected end of the arm (the thing with the needle) it will let you lower it slowly, the blank groves on the record is between each song. gently dont drop the needle or you will have to replace it often, dont touch the middle of the record touch the blank black areas at the outer edge. scratches make it jump. clean in a circular motion with a soft not scratch cloth in one direction. xoxoxoxox ( i just had to teach my 20something kids how to use theirs with my vintage....records. Your dinner looks so awesome. I'm glad you kids are getting to experience the awesomeness of a record player. There are thousands of good old Christmas 🎄 albums out there. If you find an old vinyl shop they have lots of good old records. You can sometimes get the small records which have one or two songs on them one song on each side and they play at the speed of 78. When I grew up they had all kinds of record players. My first one was like yours. Then I got one with separate speakers that flashed Psychedelic colours on the walls in my bedroom, my mom hated that one. Then when I got married I got a complete system with a separate turntable. I still have the turntable, it was very expensive back 45 years ago. I hope you kids really enjoy your record player.

You need a very gentle felt cloth and clean in the round. Don’t keep picking up the needle, you will ruin it. Just let the arm start from the beginning. If the records warped don’t play it you will ruin the needle.

You two are hilarious with that record player! Looks like you got lots of advice from us oldies on what and what not to do playing records! Lol Get rid of the warped record..it’s out of service. Harry jumping on the table or kitchen counters will be a continuing training process...just like child training. Animals can and do learn boundaries with patience and perseverance! He knows he’s loved and a little spoiled!😻😉

From a 1960’s music lover ,,,,, respect your records. Gently place the needle straight down and lift it straight up. If you hear the squeak, you’re scratching your record. Never use paper products on your records. Soft cloth You found a few gems there! It’s so fun to hear the beautiful older music❤️💕☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️

Oh, you two are so funny! I grew up with record players so I was reminiscing while watching you. And now I have to learn how to use all of the digital devices of your generation. Yeah, warped records will give you some interesting sounds. And, be careful not to scratch the records with the needle or you will quickly learn what is truly meant by "sounds like a broken record". BTW, the meal looked delicious. I never would have thought of grits, which I love, with shrimp but I guess it works.

I love that vinyl has been making a comeback! Grew up with records, went through the sad cassette days (tape trading was pretty cool though) and the convenience of CDs, but nothing can top the sound and experience of vinyl. 🥰 these days, I have Spotify for digital, and then I purchase the vinyl, as it also puts more $$$ in the artists pockets. :)

You remind me of a series of videos in which kids are shown something that was made before their time, and then asked to do something with it. One example is rotary dial telephones. The wider areas are the songs, so you should put the needle on the narrow line just outside the song you want to be played.

OMG you're going to scratch those records!!! Hold the arm near the needle, not on the metal part so you have more control and GENTLY drop it in the black/darker areas of the record which are the pauses between the songs. Enjoy!! 😊😊🎵🎶

Please don't place the tonearm by hand. There's a little stick next to it, you flip that backwards which raises the tonearm, then you place the tonearm over the record, while it's lifted, and once it's in position you flip the little stick back again which will slowly lower the tonearm onto the record😊 you have to be a bit gentle with it, the pickup on the tonearm can scratch the record over time😜🎄🥰

Oh and get a brush for the records as well (there's special brushes for that) if there's dust on the record and the needle gets in that, that can damage it too

Awww, hehe! I don’t always notice our very small age difference, my friend. But this is one area where it shows - my first album was 45 of The B52s. I hope you all enjoy it so much! We actually have an old, antique one now with a turn crank. I will have to show you sometime :).

be gentle as you place the needle on the record or you will scratch it and it will just be bumping as its playing. And touch the edge of the record not to directly touch front of it as you put finger prints over the top. Just a FYI

Hi Guys-- I'm a old lady that knows about records,so I'll give you some info about them. The big records that you have is a 33 and a half speed record. the small records with the big holes are a 45 speed record. There's a size in between and that's a 78 speed record. Always keep the record in the folder, they scratch very easily!!. To start the record from the beginning of the song put the needle's arm down on the shinier black seams on the record. Also clean the record with CD cleaner and a microfiber cloth. You can find more records at vintage stores or on the internet. They bring back many memories for me and wish I still had my records and player.Enjoy!!!!

Please look, if the record player has a lever for lifting and lowering the arm. The needle and records will live longer that way. Or make sure to be on eye level with the record and arm and slowly lower the arm. For storing the records, either standing upright, or on a flat surface without any weight on top of the records.

Hilarious! Many Moods- pretty sure I had that one. 33 for the albums, 45 for small ones with the big hole in the middle.

Yes, be gentle putting the needle down! Also, put it down on the stripes which is the quiet part between songs, give it a few seconds, and it will start playing at the beginning of a song. Most albums are 33 1/3 speed. Smaller ones with just one song were often 45. The oldest records, from maybe the 1940s and older, are 78s. It should say on the album what speed to use. I remember we got a record player for Christmas one year; we were so excited.
