Two Minute Tech: Remove Pop Rivets

Removing a pop rivet. Sounds easy right? Some go way too far and destroy the hole it came out if. I'll show you the wrong way and how I remove them. That way you have a good area to reattach.

thank you. Never too old to learn new tricks. 71 here and didn't pickup a tool besides screwdrivers, hammers and wrenches until I retired. Now it's all sorts of tools including rivet gun. Just learning and put in my first rivet yesterday. A drift boat webbing seat attached with a rivet. I'l need to redo my floorboards in the spring and it's riveted in with dozens of rivets. I can see that'll I'll need to purchase a drift. Thank you for teaching me what that I and how to remove what I suspect will be a bunch of stubborn pesky rivets

Thanks for the video - I can tell you, your method is the best one that worked. It also doesn't need any special tools. This is also an important consideration since I am DIY guy and not a professional. So I can't afford to buy special tools just for a once in random situations. Thanks and keep sharing your wisdom.

Gold! Just what I needed when pressed for time. Straight to the point. I was tasked with organizing a junk haul, and one metal shelving piece would not be picked up unless the unit was fully disassembled. Could not figure out how to separate the rivited shelves. Working on getting my dirt bikes exhaust rivets out and I wish I watched this before I drilled through the middle of them. I have half them left in but I'm gonna give the punch idea a try

That’s great in ideal circumstances, although I’m trying to remove 23 year old rivets from a boat. The holes are no longer there and I don’t have access to the back of the rivet. I got 2 out really easily but the others I’ve tried are leaving the back of the river in the hole. I’ve tried drilling with a larger drill bit but the rivet just spins in the hole now. Any other tips??

Hi, I am darn new to working with automotive rivets. The rivets I am working with have a steel exterior collar (what you see on the outside of the rivet). These must have a different removal process?(remember the most silly (stupid) questions, are the ones that are NOT asked). Thanks.

I like your method to remove a rivet. But in some cases it is not possible to get the rivet to an anvil and driving out the metal insert will just bend the metal around the rivet. How would you approach these rivets?

Really don’t know. I’d have to see what that situation looked like. If the rivet went in, there will be a way to remove it.

Well done video, Thanks. I was thinking that this would be the way to go but I always check KZbin before trying something for the first time to avoid possible embarrassment. Some of the videos on this subject look like they are butchering the original hole by trying to drill the steel pin. If i had a bunch to do I would make a drift bit for my pneumatic chisel. That should make quick work of it.

my guitar case hinges have rivets and I have broken drill bits and whatever you call that punch, they break in half... you can't drill a round surface everything. just slips right off, been working this for weeks now...

I don’t know. I’d have to see what they look like. Are they made of aluminum? If you know the manufacturer of the bed wood kit, might be better to call them and see what they suggest.
