Hi, Veronica! Did you notice (at 9:20) that on pages 34-35, the editor put colons into each line of the Te Deum where we might put asterisks (if we were splitting each line in the middle). Perhaps he was copying that practice from his source book, but it seems pretty unconventional now.

I hadn't noticed. Baronius Press doesn't include asterisks, but also doesn't add extra colons. The Angelus Press, Bonaventure press and benziger Brothers all have asterisks.

At first I just sang it on my own with the blue books, but then I posted a recording of Memento Rerum Conditor which became one of my most popular videos, then in 2020 I made the video course, and then had to learn a whole lot - and people would ask questions, and I'd learn some more, and they'd say such and such a book does it differently, why, ... Calling it an abridgment is about right, but it is a very old abridgement. And as it fell out of prominence, it missed out on getting renovated for Vatican II so it's still got that medieval feeling to it.

Professor Rachel Fulton Brown has written a book called, “Mary and the Art of Prayer: The Hours of the Virgin in Medieval Christian Life and Thought.” It provides a detailed history and development of the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It’s not an easy ready but well worth it INHO. I have been trying to pick this up and Veronica’s videos have been very helpful. I haven’t gotten to saying it every day yet but that is my goal. I try to say the 5 decades of the Rosary, the Daily readings and this. Quite challenging and rewarding. ✌️ peace.

I think Catholic Publishing put out a Liturgy of the Hours version of Little Office. I have it somewhere. It was my first.

Yes, I've seen it in the shops. Looking it up now, it has Morning and Evening Prayer for each day of the week, then the one Office of Readings, Day Prayer and Night Prayer. The hymns in there look interesting too. It's not very like the old Little Office at all, but it does look good. I guess that's a bit like the Liturgy of the Hours was such a big change, so it matches that quantum leap.

Angelus Press includes Matins, Lauds, and Vespers in the Office of the Dead. Does your version have the other hours (Prime to None)? Is that a thing?

Great question! The reprint only gives Matins, Lauds and Vespers. I have typed up the others over at dead.brandt.id.au. The few book I have which give the Office of the Dead do the same. I just did a web search and the Catholic Encyclopedia says it's an ancient thing so that's why it doesn't have the minor hours - www.newadvent.org/cathen/11220a.htm I took my minor hours from the All Souls Day office, which is very similar. The place where we used to attend Mass would say Compline for All Souls Day after an evening Requiem Mass. I had assumed it was a standard thing.

The Office of the Dead used to be prayed In Addition To your regular Office. saintsshallarise.blogspot.com/2010/10/saying-office-of-dead.html "Traditionally in a monastery the Office of the Dead was said at least once a month, but it was in addition to, not in substitution for the normal Office. I've seen it claimed elsewhere that the traditional Office for the Dead can't be said by itself, but I would strongly dispute that view (save possibly for those bound to say the Office, but see below on that):"

@@VeronicaBrandt This is a question I recently came across. I was unsure if, for laymen, we could say the Office of the Dead hours instead of the standard ones. The person in the link to the blog you posted seems to think so, stating, "under modern liturgical law, the relevant hours of the Office of the Dead can be substituted for the standard Office." For clarity, I think it'd be good to see where that is in the modern law to gain a better understanding. There's still so much to learn!

I'm avoiding Amazon - and a good job too in this case! Amazon Australia wanted $88, but Livres en Famille only charged $49.86 (AUD).

@@VeronicaBrandt The thing is pretty hefty at 1⅛" thick. Instead of listing various antiphons according to the season for one set of Psalms like the Bonaventure Pub. one, it repeats the entire Psalmody for Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, and Pentecost. I guess it makes it easy for a beginner since the whole office is composed for you from beginning to end.
