In today's video I review two very stylish and classy dress watches that I have always wanted to get my hands on. Firstly, the ultra contemporary minimalist, German made capolavoro that is the Orion by Nomos and then secondly, the iconic classic Tank by legendary Parisian luxury brand Cartier. Also don't forget check out my first publication on the outstanding website/watch blog "Theo and Harris," at the following link...

I have the Orion 35mm and I must say that this is the perfect watch even for a 1,93m guy. Small, light, accurate and really understating. I always questioned myself: what is the best diameter? On photos of myself I thought: 42 or 40mm. BUT: Every teenager can wear a cheap and "bling bling" 45mm watch but when you go in a meeting in your company in Saxony (thats where Glashütte is) you'll notice several very well dressed guys wearing Nomos. No big watches, always the smaller ones like 40 years ago. Thats pure class imo

For a Bauhaus design, I can't get enough of the Nomos dial. The hour markers are exquisite. "Pure Class!" The Cartier dial must have been very futuristic looking in its time due to its "anamorphic" nature. Perhaps that is why it seems timeless.

Wow, in no way I would've thought the Cartier had a more classic look than the speedmaster but after watching this I'll be damned... The Cartier is on the same level for legendary status, maybe even more!

I absolutely love Nomos and look forward to adding one back into my collection. I only sold my Orion 35 a few years ago because I told myself I’d limit my collection to 2-3 nice pieces, unfortunately it wasn’t as versatile as some of my sport watches. I do have to disagree with you on size though, the Orion 33 or 35 is much better proportioned than the 38. Nomos watches wear larger due to their lug to lug and I believe dress watches should err on the smaller side, therefore being more discreet.

The way that the glass on the Nomus seems to go right to the edge of the dial and the beautiful rounded edge to the case is absolutely stunning, I can,t think of a more elegant watch.

I love this solo episode of TGV watch review, Cartier solo Tank is the choice of the two, I would not mention Riverso purely because is considered a sports watch. Nomos looks Germanic and gets a thumbs up but A Lange holds the ace when it come to dress German watches. Another classic TGV review!

Actually this is the Cartier Tank Solo Large version and it has indeed the Cartier Calibre 690. That is a good thing because that is an in-house quartz Cartier caliber with 8 rubies. The small model with the Cartier Calibre 157 is actually a 4 ruby movement, made by Ebel, and can be found in other watches as well. My wife just got this one but with the steel bracelet and she loves it.

TGV - I bought a vintage Cortebert in the Spring. From the blue hands, sub second dial and gold hour markers, the Namos is the same design with very slight mods. Cortebert was a magnificent brand whose movements rivalled the best of the day. The brand disappeared as many did because of the quartz revolution. It keeps amazing time and rivals any of my watches. It's manual wind and has an impressive power reserve. It's a classic and because it's vintage, I dare say I prefer it. I got it for $100 Canadian and it was one of the best buys I have ever landed. Kudos to Cortebert. I'm proud to wear your legacy.

Thanks for the great vid as always TGV! Just bought a Tank Must for my wife. I love your comments about not really needing to pay any more for a top notch watch. I think there is much to gain from entry level offerings; I wear an OP39 2018 white dial, and the wife now has the Tank in steel strap. Simple. Perfect! I thought Cartier always had its name in one of the dial numerals? On my wifes it is in the 10 numeral.

Great video and impeccable timing - I knew of Nomos but just this previous weekend I stumbled upon a watch shop in Helsinki with the largest selection of Nomos I'd seen. It gave me the chance to rely spend some time trying them on and getting up close and personal - so impressed - love the function following form ethos and the high level quality with clearly lots of time spent getting the smallest details perfect - I now want one - I particularly like the font and sizing of the name of the dial and just the overall Teutonic vibe - big fan - thanks TGV - really nice to hear my impressions echoed - hope you are recovering well and thanks for continuing with your first class content - peace & blue skies - Tim

Great pair TGV! The Nomos is a nice choice for a men's dress watch although I'm thinking about a SARB-035 instead. The Cartier, albeit unisex, is in my opinion, a great choice for a woman and I'm quite sure your wife absolutely loves it! the Cartier is, I think, too feminine for me to feel comfortable wearing. But you've just given me an idea of the perfect gift for my wife this Christmas with the Cartier and I'm 90+% sure she would love the exact size, case color and strap color of your wife's watch! Thank You so much for your work especially this video as you have solved a bit of Christmas shopping for me at the same time. All The Best!

Do you think the Cartier Tank is too old looking for a 20 year old? I really love the tanks simple design, in a way it's almost rugged and dressy at the same time. It seems like it would work well with simply casual wear, and classier wear as well. Also, do you think the Automatic is worth the price, or to just go with the Quartz?
@timickan
@timickan 5 жыл бұрын
If you have a 9.5" wrist then go with the auto, otherwise look to the small or large. Remember that a Tank should be worn small - maybe two entire lug to lug lengths across the top of the wrist is about right. Definately not too old for a 20 year old. Wear what you like, be confident and nothing will look out of place. Remember that there are people out there that wear Submariners and such with shirt and tie, so anything goes!

I agree that the Nomos Orion is one of the most classy dress watches *ever*. However, IMO this only goes for the 33 and 35mm version. The Nomos Orion 38 is IMO way too large for a classic watch. Additionally, the proportions of the watch differ with it's size, the 38 looks a lot less harmonic to me. Still, it is a beautiful peace and a great bargain with an in-house movement. Keep up the good work! Regards!

I took a trip to new York a few weeks ago for some shows and museums. On my way I stopped in some of the high end boutiques and grabbed some catalogues. at the same time I did a bit of watch spotting, especially on the train, I saw a Cartier Tank, a seamaster 300, and a pretty heinous replica submariner in the wild, among some others. I have to say the Cartier looked better finished at a glance than anything else I saw outside of the actual watch boutiques. This was really surprising to me but it's definitely a stunning piece.

Two excellent choices and I don't think anyone could go wrong with either. While it is apples and oranges, I would have to give the edge to the NOMOS because it has something incredibly rare at its price point - a well finished and subjectively attractive movement! I must confess that I am biased towards the German three-quarter plate construction though.

Hi TGV, Thank you very much for doing an episode with more dressier watches. I like both of them. As you know, I'm owning the Orion 38 date. The reason why I paid the higher price, was the blank spot at 6 o'clock! I couldn't stand it. Why does Nomos forgo an hour marker? Maybe a fraction shorter than the others. But of course I'm not sad to own the date version. The "television" date is great. It is huge! I've got no problems to read it - even in bad lighting situations. I like the Orion more than the more versatile Ahoi. And I should have bought the Orion instead of the Ahoi. I wouldn't have the struggle to sell the Ahoi now... ;) A colleague of mine owns a Cartier. And he has a very good taste. I like the Tank a bit better than the one of my colleague. But I would prefer a mechanical. There is one thing I don't understand: Why the Roman 4 is printed with four bars (it's possible to do it like this) but the 9 is printed as "IX"? It should be "VIIII" - shouldn't it? Best regards, Claus
@MyGoshua
@MyGoshua 8 жыл бұрын
I see what you say about the 6 o'clock on Nomos watches, but the large date window seems to slightly clutter the lower half of the dial for me. What about the Orion suits you more than the Ahoi? Do you simply prefer dressier pieces? From ablogtowatch: "It is really a matter of aesthetics and visual symmetrical balance. Someone a long time ago, noticed that using that for 4 o'clock not only made a dial look visually better, but helped legibility when looking at the dial from different angles. It is called a "watchmaker's four," and it's used for those reasons." A pleasure as always Claus, and sorry to hear the Ahoi isn't being shifted. Soon I hope! Josh
@Claus-L.Mueller
@Claus-L.Mueller 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Josh, it's just a matter of personal taste. The Orion is such a classy watch. So thin and light. I would keep the Ahoi, because it's so versatile (combo of sports and dress watch with a water resistant of 200m). But I would like to get the Oyster Perpetual and have to sacrifice the Ahoi.

In the terms of simplicity and just how clean the dial is. Hope no one bites my head of for making such a comparison :D

Very impressed by the Orion. I think the strap suits it - it seems to maintain the 'bauhaus' aesthetic...but you do have a knack with different straps TGV!

Great question, I would stick to Quartz, my first and most predictable choice is of course my flight master but there are tons of great Quartz Seiko and Citizens that would do well, I might have to do a video on this. Top 5 beaters? Thank you, Best regards, TGV

Nomos has a similar 'sleeper' appeal to my favorite watch (Grand Seiko Snowflake), with a very different aesthetic. The snobs are welcome to their Rolex collections - vive le difference ;) Thanks for the vid.

Rolex make great watches because they are true sports watches. Every one of Rolex's watches excluding the Cellini can all be taken diving because they all have a screw down crown. Even a $30,000 day date could be taken diving if you are mad enough or rich enough not to care. Rolex like Seiko, Nomos, Patech and JLC produce excellent high end watches. Rolex are very popular because the brand has been in development for the modern world in the last 60 years.

Some of the older Nomos movements such as the Alpha found in the Orion were based on the old Peseux 7001 movement, but make enough changes to probably class it as there own. Newer movements however are fully designed and built in house like the Epsilon and Zeta as well as the Xi and the brand new DUW 3001. FYI, that strap on the Nomos is one of the best leather straps coming from the Horween leather company. Very tough and gets better and better with age. Lovely brand and lovely watches

Very classy Cartier!!!! I was just looking at them online. It seems like they offer a few that look the similar yet different reference models. The size difference varies just under 3-5 mm on the collection. The Tank Solo is surprisingly affordable for the name itself. For an extra hundred bucks difference you can get a larger quartz or mechanical. Prices are almost the same for all Solo collection versions. Either way I think the Solo collection is what Cartier is famous for, outside the watch world. I might have to reconsider a Tank Solo as a future go to dress watch. Forget the Reverso LOL

I love your channel! Its very informative! I just started getting into the world of quality built watches and happened upon your channel which I recently subscribed to. QUESTION! Being that I am an Architect and designer, I have fallen in love with the simplicity and clarity of the German/Bauhaus designs. I am currently weighing the options between various Nomos watches and Junghans Max Bills. I would like to keep my budget +-$3,000. I currently wear a Braun Ceramic BN0171 in gray and while I LOVE the simplicity and modern feel to it, I would like to upgrade to a higher quality watch. I would prefer a mechanical watch and that's where the Nomos originally caught my attention as it crafted with an in-house movement. I also know the Max Bills essentially originated the Bauhaus watch design which I love as well. What are your thoughts? Perhaps this could be a topic of discussion in one of your upcoming videos? Thanks for all the insight, time and effort you put forth into the world of watches!

Brendan Leadbeater Drawback of Junghans Max Bills are their crystals which are not sapphire. If you can live with that risk, I'd rate Junghans slightly higher because of price point and history associated with them. Also if you're going for a Junghans, get the one with numerals to differentiate yourself from the bloke on the street flashing a DW watch.

There are a mechanical movement version of Cartier tank which is a little bit smaller I think. I just can't stand a quartz movement. However it looks really nice in quartz.

Nice video, TGV. I do have to say that I disagree with you about the Nomos strap. I see where you're coming from, but if one is selling a Bauhaus styled watch, it needs to come on a simple, quality strap. It's really, IMO, the appropriate strap for the design.

The Cartier tank is one of the most iconic watches ever created...Nomos is ok, but it is so boring it resembles a kitchen wall clock, with no pedigree. Excellent video as always.
