Agreed about the 3 year maturity on David Austin roses. Albas and centifolias demand 3 - 5 years to acheive their basic architecture. I'm happy to see an improvement in the newer DA introductions concerning the overall balance in plant appearance, sturdy habit and stronger necks to support their gorgeous flowers. One must fall in love with the health and looks of the shrub first before any flower.

Yes that's how I would have planted my roses. I have a clay loam soil here, so I don't press my roses too much except like you did when you plant it on a mound so as to help the roots in the direction that they are going which gives some stability with backfilling around the rose roots further then I give them a bit of water, then more soil and water till I have covered the bud onion then I just fill the top level and leave it to settle down then add any top up. Because if I pressed down after the initial watering I would cause the soil to compact around the roots a bit, then as it settled later in the season I would get these cracks in the soil allowing too much exposer to the roots by the deep cracks from the surface down to the roots. I find water with clay based soils pull down around the roots below so no air pockets left around the roots and the looser dry soils above preventing cracks on the surface on the earlier days from forming. Of course cracks will still form in early summer as the soil warms and dries a bit more. Then I give it a good water, then like you is time to put their first granular feed on with a surface humus added to keep moisture in and prevents my surface cracks from appearing. Then the usual water intervals with new roses through the first season. On my soil that would be ever 10-14 day intervals and weekly in very hot dry periods. Be nice to see your roses in the video doing well which they should do as you planted very well. Just a little couple of tips, maybe have another bucket and pour manure with the soil you added into another trug or buckets whichever you prefer to use and tip into each other couple of times. This method mixes nice and even throughout your planting mix. Saves getting too much soil going over lawn so less mess to tidy afterwards.

Thank you, Trevor, interesting read! My soil is so sandy that water disappears in no time, forget about cracks forming, I never see them. We are contemplating a move in maybe 3-4 years and the place we like has clay soil. It will be a big change for me, gardening in sandy soil... I will definitely appreciate relaxed water schedule and can work the soil with amendments. Thank you!

Glad to see you are feeling better! My roses came yesterday; I put them to soak in a nice deep bucket, and guess what? It will be +1°C tomorrow! I guess I will put them into deep containers with plentry of soil temporarily and protect from the elements in a shed, until the weather improves early next week.

Dear Olga, after not gardening for 5 years I have been wondering about the PH of Black Cow since dealing with the soil in our new location. I had no idea if it was slightly alkaline or more acidic. This is good news for me since I had no idea what I was doing to the PH of my soil by adding it. Thank You for providing this important information!

Olga, I live on a farm and have been gardening for many years. I still learn a lot from you and you are my favorite You Tube channel!! I tried to order Olivia Rose this year. That is my granddaughters name but they were out of stock. Every rose that I wanted was out of stock. I have Roald Dahl, a wonderful healthy rose. Also Queen of Sweden, Gertrude Jekyll, Scepter d’ Isle, and Vanessa Bell. They are all wonderful roses. I live in central Ohio, Zone 6. Thank you for all your advice. You are delightful. ❤️

Hi Olga, How do you test if soil is acidic or neutral?
@OlgaCarmody Жыл бұрын
The most accurate way would be to do a soil test with your local state university extension service. It is very simple process. You follow their instructions (just google soil test near me), collect soil and ship it out. The benefit of this test is that you are going to know your soil pH, what your soil is missing and how to fix it. You will let them know what you want to grow and you will receive a detailed instructions what to add to your soil to be able to grow your plants. Test cost is around $15 and I would advice you to do it now, spring is very busy time and you might wait for results much longer. Hope it helps!
