Maria is her baptismal name, Ahn Hyejin is her real name and Hwasa is her stage name. In the video you can see that the old Hwasa was murdered and came back to life fiercer with red hair. Hwasa is one of the Korea IT girls: very famous, she solds out whatever she eats and wear, she managed to make a bbq place a franchise just by eating in that place! Although she is famous, hate towards her will always be present. Her unconventional looks, her presence, the way she dresses is not very welcomed in korea; imagine people signed petitions in order to kick her out from the group. You can check some youtube video that explain more about how MAMAMOO in general in a unconventional group and how HWasa herself changed a lot in the kpop industry.

The three girls at the end of the video are the other members of Mamamoo. It's a much brighter and more cheerfull scene than the rest of the video, so it's like they are what's helping her forget about all the hate and negative thoughts.

Hwasa took the name Maria when she was baptized as a Catholic so she's singing to herself and anyone else who's the victim of internet bullying and malicious sm comments. Maria is a very personal song about the hate that's been directed at her ever since she debuted. It's not about living in the fishbowl of fame with cameras directed at her but rather what it feels like to live her life while constantly being exposed to the raging shitstorm of malicious comments she receives for simply being herself - looking how she looks, dressing how she wants, and doing her own thing as a creative artist and performer. In case you didn't know, Korea has one of the highest suicide rates in the world and internet bullying has been linked to a number of suicides, esp among idols and other celebrities, so this is a serious social issue as well as a personal struggle. Maria was an enormous hit and was the most socially impactful song of the year. Naturally, kpop being kpop, Maria didn't win any SOTY awards (which went to a lightweight disco hit) but in an ironic twist Hwasa won the MAMA solo dance performance award for Maria over nominees like dance legend Taemin of Shinee. It's ironic because Hwasa is considered to be one of the weakest dancers a group that can't dance to begin with according to their haters. I know you don't take requests here so this is merely info to keep in mind if you get a request for her song LMM (Lost My Mind), the bookend song to Maria on her Maria EP. LMM is another perspective on these issues in a completely different musical style and the MV is just as gorgeous as the song. LMM was my personal pick for 2020 SOTY with Maria a close second in a photo finish. Hwasa later followed up on Maria's story in her song I'm a B(itch).

Hwasa said Maria is the crystallized tears and sweat that she shed. Her mvs and lyrics are always intricate and packed with symbols so there is always sooooooo much to take in, her brain is so sexy The MV starts with a crime scene, Hwasa is dead and people are still trying to take some shots of her. A red hair Maria (an alter ego after Hwasa baptismal name) is watching the scene careless. Hwasa funeral, only empty chairs with invitation on it and with its back turned, nobody cares like she says in the lyrics. Here an homage to the most beautiful and powerful scene in Malena movie, with all those men offering their lighter to her. Malena is the most beautiful woman of a SMALL village (it can be a comparison to South Korea restricted mentality), because of her looks and her solitary state, she is an object of lust for all the town's men and of hatred for its women…after many vicissitudes and a very hard time she understood that her beauty is her salvation. So she cuts her black hair and dyes by red her hair, changing her attitude as well. We can clearly see a difference among Hwasa and Maria, both in outfits and attitude. In the table scene we can see a bloodstained Maria with rubber boots and a pretty simple outfit at a table with people all dressed up, they're keyboard warriors. Again lyrics "You all worked hard hating. If you knock me down. Does that feed you?" She's serving them with all sort of things. The table is full with jewels, trove of tapes, mics, cds, diamonds…but they're just looking at those picky. Maria with a bored face is watching them and then she starts happily eating a brain. The difference among Maria and those people is so strong and impactful. I've also read that eat someone's brain means pester someone. The triangular tub is also interesting, she's bathing in milk and rose petals like a Queen and her skin is so white, but once again she looks bored and then she starts to make 'no' gesture with her finger with a smirking face. Like 'I don't need to be pale, I'm beautiful like this'… probably a references to all hateful comments she gets about her bronze skin since ages. We're back to Hwasa, she's trapped like in a mental hospital with a straitjacket, all her body is constrained by laces…this once again can be interpreted as the restricted South Korea mentality. They're monitoring her, pencils (comments) are pointed at her and she is trying to escape from this kind of net (network) until she finds a crown with diamonds and nails (representing the double faces of success). Ink-stained hands Hwasa decides to wear the crown, She got ink on her hands while fighting malicious comments, in fact we can see her beating her fists on the ground and shouting. The triangular tub is back but this time we can see Maria and Hwasa looking at each other through a bloody water. A triangle is a figure linked to different trinities like mind, body & spirit; past, present & future; thought, feeling & emotion and creation, preservation and destruction. And, personally, all those fit this MV perfectly. And now we discover Hwasa was not dead at all. Like it was all a dream, in fact she's on a coach with scissor in her hands, she is alone with her thoughts when suddenly Mamamoo members appear with big smiles. She said many times Mamamoo are her strength and she was able to face difficulties since trainee period only because they were together. The whole lyrics are beautiful and powerful but sad at the same time. She said this is an exciting yet sad song, she likes those kind of songs because they resemble life. With this album Hwasa became the FIRST Korean female solo artist to reach #1 on iTunes US Album chart and ranked 1st on the WORLDWIDE album chart as well. She co-wrote and co-composed 4 songs out of 6 of this album…an amazing album with powerful collaborations, a Queen like always.

She hurt her back right before her song dropped. Whole album was so good. Maria is great song and great MV. Opening scene with her deceased, and then you see the exhibition tape around like you see in museum and photographers, she is only and object to them. Something to gawk and stare at. The funeral scene is great too. Alive, so many their either hating or loving her or using her. Yet. All chairs turned around and no one came to the wake. Then the Malena scene with the cigarette and all lighters, the scene where she's in the neutral outfit, almost like she's in a morgue. The bath scene, not very sure but maybe the fact that she has darker skin tone but snow white skin is preferred. Pencil attacking her, as in tabloids and crazy Internet trolls attacking her with their words. DKTV (I think) does a whole explanation of Maria. By the way, Maria is her babtismal name. Song sounds as if she is always saying Maria but it's actually a play on words seeing as "I'm saying this to you." sounds as if she is saying Maria. She is singing the song to herself. Just like in LMM, which is another amazing Hwasa song.

María as it is mentioned is her baptismal name she got with her biological name when she was a baby.. The MV have a lot of symbolism that it will take time to explain, but in short there is two Marías one with the black hair (which is the good María and one with red hair the bad María, in the first shot the good María committed a suicide and yet her death became a spectacle and for content, everyone is tuned in but nobody really care to show in her funeral… you can also see the crown made of nails depicting her fame and crucification… there is a lot to say and explain but in the big scheme of the MV the good Maria was contemplating all that in her head so before she commits the act her friends (here Mamamoo members) came to visit her and knocked her from that state, showing the importance of support when you feel all alone The song is for herself and all those struggling in life reminding them no matter whatever they are going through it is a bright night and they need not to struggle because their existence itself is beautiful.. Also the lyrics are genius, you might only hear the name María repeated but she used three different words with different meanings and one of them is the name María.. the lyrics are well structured and dimensional, for example in the first verse where she says “I get cursed at so much I have indigestion” the literal lyric she used for cursed at is “I ate so much swears to the point of having indigestion” Just to mention she wrote the lyrics and composed the song along with her producer. The whole María album is a masterpiece, if you have time check it out, you can also watch her album visualizer “ 1st Mini Album [María] Intro : Nobody Else” of the intro song Nobody Else where it shows how alone she felt Please do watch LMM (an acronym for Lost My Mind) along with “Hwasa - MARIA & LMM Explained by a Korean” by dldktv, it explains the beauty of the lyrics well especially LMM

Maria is Hwasa's baptismal name. She is Christian (Christianity is the second biggest religion in Korea) They say that there are three 'faces' that you can have. The one that you show the world (Hwasa), the one you show your family and friends (Ahn Hyejin - her real name) and the one that's truly yourself (Maria). Please react to her song I'm a B!@#

I'm not gonna repeat what's already been said. But I would like to add a little context. It's hard for us in the West to appreciate the difficulties a celebrity experiences in a socially conservative society like SK, when they don't conform. And because Hwasa doesn't fit the standards, whether it's physically or in behavior, there is tremendous harassment aimed at her. And remember this is from her debut when she is only 19 constant until present. Some of it was truly awful. Death threats, images of her dead or disfigured. Nonstop posting of cruel comments about her looks or her mannerisms posted online on social media and in comment areas. As a fan I was horrified when I saw some of this stuff. So it would be no surprise that she would wonder if ending herself would end the pain. She hasn't been murdered in the opening scene. If you look, there are scenes where black haired Mariah is holding a pair of scissors contemplatingly. She is in the same dress and chair as she is in in the ending shot. When her friends show up in a gesture of support. This song and MV is a very deep, introspective look into her psyche at the time. The ending scene is an alternative ending to what is the opening funeral scene
