Wow - I am a two-spirited man from a First Nation band here in Canada. Thank you for posting this documentary as I wasn't aware that the same sex marriage ruling back in 2015 didn't include reservations. I hope that things change for the better for my two-spirited sisters and brothers down south sooner rather than later. Much love!!

If anything I’d argue it makes him look like more of a bigot. Colonialism and Christianity go hand in hand, that man doesn’t know about Creator. He thinks Creator judges, that Creator labels people as sinners. He does not understand history. Look at residential schools for example, it’s obvious to me that enforcing hateful beliefs in the name of religion only leads to more pain. He does not want to remedy colonial pain. He wants instead to act as if he knows the will of God. To separate our people and breed more hate within indigenous communities. Simply put, his beliefs are antithetical to creating strong and healthy communities.

The subject of being a person with two spirits is more about gender rather than sexual preference. It's about embodying both the masculine and feminine energies and representing both almost equally in their own unique and individual way.

Brings heart-felt tears to me that so many Two-Sprit People still suffer Hate, and Violence from even their Own Native Societies. I am 1/3 rd Cherokee, even though that is very small. I cherish my Ancestry no matter where they came from or who they are. I have NOTHING but RESPECT, and LOVE, and Honor to Native American's. Even though I have gotten stares of hate or Uncertainty from them. I will ALWAYS show them Love, and RESPECT, because they are the 1st and TRULY REAL Americans. But 100% of my RESPECT and LOVE goes to the Two-Spirit People, because I too am Gay. Love and RESPECT and Honor

I know this is really late but I just stumbled upon this video. At 11:49 He explains the historical definition of being two spirited and that being a two spirit person has to do with gender norms and NOT sexual identity. Therefore a person who is two spirited can also be a heterosexual, homosexual, pansexual etc.x10.. From my experience, it's a form of spiritual empathy and understanding. Seems as though powerful influencers still have control over how the word is defined because now that being LGBTQ+ is coming into more power/respect through protest & intervention, the lack of understanding of multiple forms of existence & feeling seems like it is assigning the term to sexual identity instead of it's original purpose. Unfortunately, that does us all a disservice.

Two spirit people have a long history of having a place in their tribes. When the Christian missionaries came in they preached only man and only woman and nothing else. As LGBTQIA+ rights became more socially accepted the tribes that took on the Christian identities are late in accepting the social changes. As a two spirit Native person it hurts me to see other Natives be hurtful and not accept who we are and not accept our place in our tribes. It’s sad that I find more acceptance in my non Native society than my home Native land! I am glad to see changes happening more and more thou in native tribes!

IM also two spirit,and have known since I was 3 years of age that I was a spiritual being in the physical body,that I had a deeper purpose for being here and that I was Two Spirit,Homosexual. I doubt they see it that way. In this perspective they express both genders, so I doubt gendered pronouns are considered hurtful or insulting. They are actually positive because they support the energy of the gender they refer to. It’s not to say they wouldn’t refer to them using different pronouns as well.

That's because the Catholic religion is used to make people easier to control. To make us fall in line with their colonization. By teaching people to think in a sort of metaphorical fear and guilt based box. Teaching people to go against their very core nature and way of being. To hate themselves if they don't fit into a certain category or way white people would like us to. At its base, the Catholic religion is based off a pagan Greek religion disguised as the message of Jesus Christ. But then what do I know really? You're right the Native way is a higher way of seeing, more aligned with divine love. It just surprises me a lot when people want to look down on Natives when we're much more spiritually awakened.

I've yet to find ANY written or oral history of the use of the term "Two-spirit" being used in ANY tribe. IJS, it sounds made up by either a half breed or drunken Indian lol And I say that as a Native American, an inter-tribal Native at that. (Crow, Sioux, Apache, Chippewa..)

We still had our "Two-Spirit traditions pre Cuckplumbus, it's just that each Nation and band had our own words for it, "Two-Spirit" is a post colonial term invented to create an inter-tribal term to be embraced by L.G.B.T.
