A lot of reactors miss the significance of the opening scene. You almost caught it; yes that was Ned's wolfskin scabbard to the family broadsword sword Ice, which is what Tywin was melting down to create two new Lannister Valyrian steel swords. It basically symbolized the defeat of the Starks by the Lannisters, and the death of the thousands of years of Stark family history with that sword.
