Same! Just went on a trip, driving across New Mexico, I was like, "We need gas." My husband said, "It's a 1/4 tank. We don't need gas yet." I said, "It's New Mexico. And we have a baby." An hour later he was like, "Why haven't I seen a gas station yet?" Always prepared.

Nothing truer on the internet 🤣 I'm definitly Penn! My husband did the long-distance thing for 4 years. I was in LA and he was in Phoenix, so we would drive that route all the time. Gas is WAY more expensive in CA than it is in AZ (like 30+ c/gallon more), so I always made it my goal to roll into the first AZ gas station on empty. One time I almost cut it too close- the low fuel light turned on with easily 30-35 miles left to go... AT NIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DESERT. My grandpa always said "you've got 30 miles easy!" when that light came on, so I just crossed my fingers and thought of him 🤣 Thankfully, he was right, and I was able to roll into AZ on fumes and fill up with that glorious, cheap gas 😁

I am totally like Penn. I only ran out of gas once and that was because I got a leak in my fuel line. I have had the empty light on this week. I used to love filling up my 11 gallon tank with 11+ gallons! (now I have a 20 gallon tank and I can't afford to fill that as often).

I'm a bit in the middle of these two extremes. When the gas light goes off I don't panic but I make sure I get gas before the day is over so I won't have to do it before work in the mornings. I ran out of gas once in college in a less than desirable part of town and had to walk a couple of miles to a trash gas station, buy an overpriced gas can, buy overpriced gas, then walk back. And because the can was so small, and my tank was completely empty it wasn't enough to start so I got to walk back and do it again. Lesson learned.

I 100% agree with Penn on the wasting net hours getting gas more often!, was thinking that when she first said she needed gas at a quarter tank. Now, I have run out of gas before and pushed my truck into a side neighborhood, so I don't let it get that low... but do now know how far I can actually get when the nudging light comes on.

I live in fire and earthquake country, so I never let my tank dip below a quarter. The Paradise fire, especially, showed how a near-empty tank can mean death. My brother had friends who had to drive through a tunnel of fire, and there were people who got stranded because their car wouldn't start. I'm not super vigilant on keeping my car clean, but I will never even flirt with the idea of letting it hit empty.

I grew up feeling like the light was a warning and then as an adult I had a car where it actually meant "now!", got stuck on the side of the road and had to have someone from my son's daycare come rescue me and bring me a can of gas. I almost never let it go to empty now and get nervous when the light goes on even if my current car has 35 miles left. On super long road trips, I fill up whenever there's the opportunity because I don't want to chance it.

Love you guys. Just 2 things I thought I would share.... having been the victim of both. 1. the fuel pump in most vehicles is located in the tank, being bathed by nice, cool gasoline... unless it isn't and then it will burn out if constantly left running uncooled by fuel. (which is usually about 1/4 tank level) 2. Overfilling your tank (just stop when the pump does) will put gas back down your fuel vapor purging system (if your car has it) and eventually plug it up and cause a check engine light to come on , and you will have to sit there clicking like a cup of gas at a time into the tank because the new pumps will feel the pressure difference and not let the gas flow freely from the pump. *super annoying and people behind you will actually hate you.

Super FUN! Thanks guys! I am the “wait until the tank is empty and the signal beeps” person and I believe I have undiagnosed ADHD… My husband will wait until it’s pretty close to that though… and he is even less tidy in the car than me… So… I think part of the split comes from gendre combined with tendencies toward risk / time / cleanliness etc

So true… I clean out my car (trash, wipe down the dash, sanitize the controls and handles) EVERY fuel up, and I’m never less than 1/4 tank without looking for a station. My husband can’t use his backseat and constantly runs near empty.

Growing up, my mom was Penn. The gas light was always on and she would always say “oh we’re fine, we have like 50 miles once the light comes on.” There was no way of keeping track how many we had already driven like how cars nowadays can show you how many miles you have left. It gave me extreme anxiety

My mom, too!! The car actually died on us when I was little but we just happened to be on the downhill side of the road and coasted into the station at the bottom of the hill. I was freaked and mom just laughed ! So I NEVER let the warning light go on! I’m scarred for life. Because of that.

She was doing what I do. She was probably basing it on her odometer. Example: if she's at 300 miles and the car can go to 350 typically, then you have 50 miles. If I'm at 325 in my car, I know I have 14 miles to get gas because I have a gallon in the tank. 😂 I haven't run out of gas, but I have coasted in if I'm really close.

I'm Kim, definitely. I don't like to go below 1/4 tank. While my car is filling up I toss the old receipts/junk from my cup holders and wipe the windows. I love seeing a full tank when I get back in the car. My husband is the same way about the quarter tank "rule". It would drive me insane if he always insisted he had plenty of gas while driving around on fumes. Being stranded on the side of the road is a fear of mine!

This is so funny because I am both of you! I always get gas before I'm on E and I love being past F and getting even $$ on the pump. I clean out the inside of my car at the gas station but sometimes I just toss the stuff. I never want to wash the outside of my car so I am always waiting for Nature's car wash. I love to put in the addresses for GPS but frequently ignore the voice guidance corrections and go off "the grid". I have been known to drive with multiple warning lights on but I try to stay on top of those " oil change" stickers "low tire air pressure lights. So I guess I have a split- personality!

I used to be a long haul truck driver and when the red light came on, we had an additional 50-60 miles worth of fuel. Although once, the fuel sensors stopped working and the engine died when we were on I-10 in FL with 3/4 tank of fuel. Had to be towed.

@dennislaur2515

Two things. First, the warning light indicated about 50-60km(30+ miles) of range, but most importantly the fuel pump that is in the tank is at the point where it's not being properly cold my fuel anymore. This is why it is best to fuel up before that light comes on. Second, when the pump shuts off at fueling, the tank is at full. Adding more to round up the dollar is dumping liquid fuel into the vapor recovery system of the car or posable the pumps vapor recovery system.

Real tips to join the humor: I've established the habit of never letting it get below half, because then if there's an emergency I'll never run out, it doesn't take as long to fill up, and it costs less overall because once it's below half studies show your car uses a bit more than when it's fuller. The peace of mind knowing I'm prepared to leave and drive a long distance if needed is worth the "extra" time spent at a station, and on top of that, I'm more flexible with when and where I can go. If Costco is full that day, I'm good to wait for another day or time when it's less busy with zero worry. The light mileage I'm sure depends on what kind of speed, terrain, and weather, but I never get to that point. Don't top off though; over-filling is bad and I don't want to risk spills. Being fueled (pun intended) by motivation provided by waiting until the last second is an ADHD thing, not a men/women thing, but not every person with ADHD does that: I have ADHD and that's just one I don't allow myself to do. I avoid opening and closing car doors while filling up because that can create static electricity, which can be flammable and therefore super dangerous at the gas station. If I do get back in, I'll clean what I can from the driver's seat, including dusting off the dash with a cheap little extendable mini duster I just got. Penn's actually onto something though with cleaning; chuck everything into the trunk or a designated spot in the back seat, and then you have a pile ready for you when you're home to deal with it (instead of spread all over).

I NEVER let the van go below 3/4 of a tank! My husband is very laid back in the summer (a/c off had me cracking up) but in the winter with how cold it gets here, he never lets it go below 1/2 tank. We have an older van, 2015 I think, so condensation in the tank can mess it up.

I have always waited til the last fumes are leaking out, and have run out before making it to the pump many times. Even on dates. When dating my first wife my gas gauge was actually broken and we ran out at least once. I finally found the love of my life, and she got to experience the adventure of driving down a dark road looking for a tiny station who was locking up and made me put the money through the mail slot! I firmly believe that life should be an actual adventure. But the love of my life thinks there should be a limit to that, so I mind her and fill up at a quarter tank now. Nuff said.

He is a bit right. I used to be poor when I was young and I had an old analogue meter it was usually between empty and very empty. There is still enough gas usually to make it. Back in the day I did have a jerrycan though and there were times when I had to walk to the nearest gas station :))) Nowadays gas light on just means do it in the next 1-2 days. Once it says 20 km then I am definitely doing it. But my car is clean inside and out I do not keep a mess in there ... Also when there is a warning I am connecting to the port and running diagnostics on my phone and I look up the error codes. Don't ignore those.

Hilarious! I am in the in-between category. Most of the time, I fill up between 1/4 tank and empty. Sometimes, I push the envelope. The one time I ran out of gas in my life was last year. I found one, and I'll never do that again.

Penn needs to know that running out of gas can damage the fuel pump (the gas is also the fuel pump lubricant and coolant). Many fuel pumps are inside the fuel tank, and cost lots of $$$ to replace. Also, the last drops of fuel can have water condensation as contaminant (water being heavier than fuel).

I'm an inbetween person. I look for gas when it gets under 1/4 and usually don't wait for the light.

1/4 tank, it’s time to get gas- that’s me. My hubby is Penn, especially when it comes to the cleaning technique 🤦‍♀️

No, this is not about gender, this is ADHD! I can so relate to Penn. I don't like taking the time to get gas either....and that red light, well, yeah, it does kind of make you feel alive :)

In college, I ran out of gas more than once. So more Kim like to me... Plan on gas once on half.

Yes, AND add differences in the importance of finding the best gas price. My hubby will calculate best price and place to go and plan ahead. Considering gas spent on the drive, he's still feeling frugal is he saves cents. For me, my time is worth money and the stress of calculating and thinking about all of that is probably bad for my health :). I get gas when I need it and at the place that takes the least amount of time and effort to get done.

My ancient car (vintage 1994) warns me when it thinks I have 50 miles left. I rarely let it go that low.

When I hit half a tank, I start planning my next fill up.

Because of where I live and the winters we get I never let my gas tank go below 1/2 but am usually looking to fill it once we've used 3/8th of a tank. My husband is the same way, but I have friends that will go until the light comes on. LOL.

Kim let it get down to a quarter tank? Rookie. I gas up as soon as I hit a half tank.

My record is 9.95 gallons for a 10 gallon tank. But, usually I fill up when it's less than 1/2 a tank. No panic, so I guess that put me in the middle.🙂 There's enough stress in life, the gas tank doesn't need to be one of them.
