Invisible walls are a great way to keep your player in the correct area, and to enforce boundaries in your worlds. Today I am discussing two different methods I have found to have invisible objects in the world, using a toggle on meshes, and using materials with maxed opacity.

Extremely strange methods, in the first case in the editor we close the view and do not see the scene that we create, in addition, we have in fact an unnecessary static mesh on the level. Despite the fact that it is not visible unreal still calculates its parameters on a par with other objects of the actor class and static mesh. In the second case, we have all the same disadvantages as in the first, but at the same time and the material is complex, even though it is completely transparent engine it calculates approximately the same as would calculate the shader say glass (and glass shaders are usually extremely heavy) And if you change the view in the scene to shader complexity, it will be seen that the material is red, which indicates that its performance BAD. Thus if we place the first walls on the level, we will not be comfortable designing it, because the engine if we are not in the game view then the engine we will close pieces of his level and the engine will calculate the collision of such a wall when placing anything on the level, in the second way we lose a lot of performance. So these methods are just terrible. The only true way to make invisible walls in unreal is blocking volume, which for such purposes and was made and deprived of all the minuses of the above methods

Thank you for this, I had never heard of these blocking volumes before. I really like the explanation on why these approaches are more expensive. I will do some more research into what these volumes are, and see what else I can learn. Have a great day!
