Thanks for that ride. It’s showing the destruction really well. I’ve resisted going around but went through Pakowhai yesterday which was shocking. Thanks to everyone helping us clean up. A massive task.

I resisted heading into areas where I would get in the way. People have enough to deal with without idiots taking videos of them. It's hard to believe the effort that has already gone in to the recovery so far.

Napier South Resident here: It's just so unreal that blocks away there is total devastation. I've also resisted the urge to go have a look as I don't want to get in the way or get trapped out of Napier. Biggest damage on my street is some broken trees and fences and the impact of a week without power. A few appliances got fried and there's less work, but I'm bloody lucky. To think this video started only blocks from me is crazy.

@@Karlandra The Stop Bank behind the Pettigrew Arena got as high as 15cm below the top. That Stop Bank is huge at that part of the river and if it had Breached and then Burst it would of been deadly for the people of Taradale. But it Burst further up stream on the opposite Stop Bank sending the water into the rural and lifestyle blocks. Fernhill did the same, it Burst on the side that sent the water into rural land instead of bursting the other side that would of flooded Hastings residential. Two different rivers bursting perfectly into the least populated areas with the most land to soften the blow. Incredible luck, or was it ???????????????????????

Mate, whether you realize it or not, there are thousands of expats all over the world, many of them here in Oz, who are really thankful to all you guys putting up these videos. We can't be there to help, and we may have family or friends there, and as we can appreciate the communications, power supply and all the other service problems y'all are having, we are sincerely grateful to you folks for taking the time to do this and let have a little window into your tragedy. Stay safe, keep your Kiwi positivity going and keep on doing what you're doing. Thank you. Sending you all blessings.

@@theNZbv Maybe show the crazy contrast of some of the less impacted areas. Start on Nelson cres before heading towards Clive or something? It's insane, we are an island within an island, didn't understand how bad things were until we got power back and could catch up on the News.

@Karlandra. I had exactly the same experience. I fled to Wellington when the Clive bridge opened the first time. It was only when I got to Wellington that I saw images from the rest of the district.

Incredible footage thanks for sharing. I work for HB Today I've shot plenty of extreme weather events but this thing was just a totally different beast. So much destruction so many good folk left devastated, incredibly sad loss of life yet incredibly the numbers are not far far higher. I'm putting a wee vid on my channel shortly starting with the rescuers at Links Road I'm still genuinely amazed no one was lost along there. liked and subbed mate cheers Paul

I'm wondering how it will change Napier, and Hawke's Bay in general. Will it be a formative event like the 1931 quake? Will we see a radical shift in the regions economy? It going to be interesting seeing how things shape up post recovery.

thanks, dude for trying to video around Napier as I'm in the taradale area and watching videos like this makes me cry we lost power just before 10pm on Monday 13th of February till Monday 20th of February late afternoon when we had power and internet again and on Tuesday 14th of February we had an evacuation to Tamatea intermediate school hall and I caught covid from there but didn't have any symptoms till Thursday 16th of February feeling lightheaded and sore muscles then I rang st johns ambulance on Friday 17th of February at night due to I was not feeling too good and they tested me for covid it came back positive

The increase in covid cases is something that hasn't been talked about much. I hope that it doesn't result in more hospitalizations. There was a time when Taradale seemed like the safest neighbourhood to live in. No big buildings to fall over in an earthquake. Far enough inland to avoid tsunamis. Not sure how many people planned for an evacuation.

and like most environmental problems, it has accumulated over multiple generation and is not up to the current generation to start to fix. This generation of forestry workers, politicians, environmental scientists and engineers. We can't expect one single organization to provide a lasting solution.
@laraevery3959 Жыл бұрын
@@theNZbv Interesting hypothesis, however the principals of environmental damage not belonging to the current generation seems like a really easy blanket copout to me. There is not one industry operating in today's world, within NZ, where this sort of magnification of devastation would be tolerated. So people's lives are not enough of a reason, for the corporations responsible to be held accountable? This is not a new problem. Farmers have to plant their bloody creeks to make them stable....what gets done after hills, steep ranges, gulleys, and expansive plains are scavenged after forestry use? Remind me please. An apology from a corporation, a business, a profit maker, under the circumstances, is woefully inadequate. I'm very sad to see you giving them yet another get out of jail free card with your comment above. Dont be another voice making excuses. Historically, other countries have been where we are. This phenomenon of uncovered, unprotected land is a concept covered in Horticulture Level 3 ffs!!!!
@theNZbv Жыл бұрын
@Lara, you misunderstand me. I didn't say that the current generation was exempt from responsibility. Nor did I say that the corporations shouldn't be held responsible. They most certainly should should. Some of the companies should be shut down. But none of that actually fixes the issues. The problems extend way beyond forestry. We must also address the how we build roads, our town planning, building regulations, infrastructure, supply chain, etc. The current situation has just exposed how precariously balanced things are. So, yes, accountability would be an easy first step. But it's only a first step.

Note the species in the drone footage - willows and poplars- the same trees planted for flood protection - the span missing was hit with a triple truck poplar!! These are full trees that have come through not Slash!!

The water flowed into the EIT but I cant see where from. Maybe a closer drone view would be great. It looks as though it probably built up in from of the bridge from all the Slash and went left and over the road ? Breaches and Breaks in the Stop Banks would be very valuable for the viewer to see if possible.

Believe me I have walked the bridge to assess the clearing of the Slash! When are people going to realise that it is the 772mm of water in under 24 hours with full trees being uprooted and swept onto these bridges that has done the damage !!

Time for a class action against the loggers to force them to pay for a portion of the clean up and damage caused by their greed and the forestry department to give them a good shake up for their negligent management. They need to be made to make sure that sites are logged in a manner that does not result in massive erosion and that waste logs and branches are cleaned up.
