As an Chinese, I suggest you go to Chengdu, there have the best food in China and some old building with characteristic of old China

I think what was meant was that the Chinese don't generally drink water or soft drinks with their meals - but they certainly will drink alcoholic drinks with a meal (like at our Hot Pot meal), although that seems to take place not with an everyday meal but in more of a social party meal :)

Just came back from China last week. Stayed for two weeks. A lot of chinese restaurants serve hot or warm water with meals. But almost every time I ate out I drank 8proof chinese beers like water because of the low alch content.

Alc. drinking is a pretty area depending thing in China. People in the north and west, say Xi'an, are way better in drinking than people in areas like Suzhou. My personal favorate is a type of 56% alc. called Erguotou. Strong and cheap. Beer is also something big in China.
