As a tall lanky 6'3" conductor with long arms, I've learned to be SUPER careful walking thru an orchestra to get to the podium, especially in the pit (I do mostly opera.) It's a mine field of disasters waiting to happen if your arm or leg brushes an instrument. I've never knocked anything over, thank God. But once when I was a newbie conductor, the baton did fly out of my hand and landed in the second violin section. No damage was inflicted and we could all laugh about it later. And I made sure it never ever happened again. We conductors can be dangerous, musically and physically HAHA!

@@MissTwoSetEncyclopedia HAHA! It is. the problem is that most pit entrances are in the back behind the whole brass section near one corner....so you are forced to walk thru the brass, then whatever strings and winds are next to get to that podium. Usually the players are really good about making a pathway for you if they know it's tight, and if so, I always talk to them (especially string players) to let them know I'll be walking by them to get in and out each performance.

11:50 When I was performing in a choir in my first year of junior high school, I wanted to cough shortly after singing the first song (it was the rainy season, so my throat was uncomfortable in those days), but I was close to the microphone, so I could only force myself not to cough and start lip-synch. I hold back my cough for about 3 minutes until the end of the second song, and my tears came out because my throat was soooooooo uncomfortable. The principal and school directors sat at the front, and I'm sure they saw my tears, because after the performance, the principal commented that although the choir was very low volume, but there was someone who sang very emotionally, and he was very happy that someone could understand the story behind the song.
