Awww, this brings back memories! When I was little - 4/6 ish - my Scottish grandfather would turn the radio on to opera. Language unknown and unneeded. He'd have me tell the story I was hearing - just from the emotions that the singing invoked. This was a game I did even after he passed, it was our game. As I grew, I expanded the game to all classical pieces. I remember once I was listening to some piece, the title of which I didn't catch - and it was a fox hunt! I could hear the fox dodging and weaving, the howling hounds, the pounding of the horses' hooves, the fox doubling back over a fence - I could see it in my mind like I was right there. And when it ended, they repeated the title of the piece. The Fox Hunt, I think it was Mozart, but that part of the memory is gone. I miss my Grandfather and hadn't thought of this game in years.

Going to the opera is like going to the cinema; you have such a diversity of operas ( dramas, comedies, more abstract, more literal) as well as type of stagings ( modern, traditional, etc). If you see an opera you don’t enjoy, perhaps it wasn’t the right one for you ( like seeing a movie you don’t like). But I guarantee you there is one out there for you! If you’d like some recommendations, let me know in the comments what type of art you enjoy and I’ll do my best to suggest a good match ;)
@bethbilynskyj1623 жыл бұрын
If you see an opera you don't enjoy, perhaps it was the production. Case in point: François Girard’s production of Wagner's "Parsifal." Otto Schenk’s production (with sets by Günther Schneider-Siemssen) is more faithful to the text. The Good Friday Spell is supposed to take place in a meadow with flowers blooming; not in the middle of a parched Saharan moonscape.

Any recommendations on what to watch for beginners? I like listening to concertos, and symphonic works much like everybody else on this sub. And i’ve enjoyed a few broadway musicals too although i’ve noticed that opera and broadway are very different things. I really want to get into opera it sounds fun, and some of the music sounds heavenly, i would appreciate whatever you recommend. Thanks in advance ☺️
@bethbilynskyj1623 жыл бұрын
@@kimc.1899 Probably the most familiar and easiest first opera for a beginner is Bizet's "Carmen." It has inspired musicals, films, ballets, pieces for violin and piano, and even an Olympic ice skating routine. Oscar Hammerstein's 1943 Broadway musical, version, "Carmen Jones" updated the story to a WWII African-American setting, and in 1954 Otto Preminger filmed it. starring Dorothy Dandridge and Harry Belafonte, Most recently, in 2001, Beyonce has even offered "Carmen: A Hip Hopera" as a musical romantic drama television film. Puccini is also good for beginners--Madame Butterfly, Tosca, and Turandot have gorgeous music, and opportunities for fine sets and costumes. Verdi's Aida, when performed by a world-class company like the Met-- can be visually stunning, with it's Triumphal Scene. Some productions include horses and even elephants. La Traviata and Otello are also wonderful. Mozart's Magic Flute is lots of fun, as is Johann Strauss's Die Fledermaus: both have comedic moments and glorious music, but when it comes to German opera I find it hard to surpass Richard Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier, with its transcendent last act trio for three sopranos. But the absolute Everest of opera is Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen. If you like Lord of the Rings or Marvel's Thor, you might enjoy the story, with its "leitmotifs" (musical themes) for various persons, emotions, objects, etc. that intertwine through out the 15 hours of the four operas. But it's not for the fainthearted! Best to try something less demanding to start out. IMO, opera is the ultimate art form, combining music (orchestral and vocal) literature/poetry, art, theater, and dance. But it's like a souffle--it only takes one thing to go wrong and the whole thing can flop. I envy your journey of discovery--so many fabulous works lie ahead of you! Do keep us posted. : )

actually the nose opera is pretty accurate considering the narrative of the story... it was written by one of the Russia's most famous writers N. V. Gogol, in Russia we study this in the beginning of the 10 grade in school. The story starts as the adult man wakes up in his usual morning and suddenly finds his nose missing, then he tries to find it while walking through the whole st. Petersburg. When he eventually runs into the missing nose, he sees it all dressed up in military clothing. It's a really engaging grotesque story and I think audiobook doesn't take more than 2-2.5 hours. Definitely worth reading/listening :D
@ymkecox6253 жыл бұрын
@@proxima8219 you're right, I've read the story in a Dutch translation and I found it super good! I also like Gogols 'Diary from a fool' (I'm not sure if that is the right title, in Dutch it is, but I don't know in English.) and the story about the coat. So if you like the story about the nose, you'll definitely appreciate the others too.

Slightly off-topic but, did you know that the Franco-German TV-channel 'arte' that broadcasted the second clip you showed will also air a documentary about Hilary Hahn in November. I think it was first shown on a film-festival in May but as far as I know this will be the TV premier, and also be available online.

My mothers great grandmother was Dame Joan Sutherland - And I had just found out this year, so at my school I did a presentation and got high results on it, I love opera as well, my mother is a Opera singer, and has been for over years! People really need to appreciate the power and excellence in opera! 🗣🎶

One of my favorite opera pieces is the papageno papagena duet, but this version totally killed it. Also, its funny how twoset didn't realize the girl on the floor is the female lead and the princess who's being told to kill a temple priest, not some vague character who's been stabbed.

Quickly translated lyrics of《 Le roi carrote 》if anyone is interested: I already told you I think I am the Carrot King, good heavens! Misfortune to those who touch me! I am gnome and sovereign, My kingdom underground! On mute with the rats, I walk under your feet! The Carrot King who trots Who can wring your neck I am the Carrot King, good heavens! Misfortune to those who touch me!

eddy towards the end: if this video did not get you to like opera, then you must practice until you are cultured enough to like it me: wait does that mean i have to practice so much i go insane and delusional so i like the weird operas? maybe that's what happened to the composers of these operas idk

Opera is crazy dramatic lol. If u r looking to get into opera, one I would recommend is Noye’s Fludde by Benjamin Britten. It was written to make opera more accessible to the wider population I think. I performed in this and it was a r good time and the opera was accessible for all ages :)

The Magic Flute was my first opera and what made me want to sing. My favourite part has always been the Papageno/Papagena duet.. I have never seen it done like that, and I hope never to see that again. Also, I tried to watch The Nose. I don't know why I didn't expect the chorus line of tap dancing noses. It was like some poor soul's deranged fever dream. Oh god, I have so much to say about opera!
