Two Wheel Cruise

Күн бұрын

Our city in Japan (Nagoya) has some well developed cycling infrastructure and some decent bike lanes, but I generally feel safer riding in the main road with the large number of unpredictable pedestrians.
In today's video, my wife Thuong and I are cycling in the heart of Nagoya along some of the main bike lane paths, the Nagoya Science Center Park, and the shopping district Osu Kannon.
It's really amazing how quickly you can go from a wide busy street to a small neighborhood road in the Japanese cities, and it's a blast to ride a bike no matter where you go.

Likewise with the bike inspiration. I ordered new tires and tubes (smoothies to replace the knobbies) for a Mtb that I haven't ridden in 25 yrs. Ordered from an online shop that TWC recommended in one of his maintenance vids. I'm in Canada so will have to wait for another month or so before I can get out riding. Really looking forward to experimenting with tire pressures once the weather is nice.

In my city there are some bike paths that go on the sidewalk or central median, has the same problems as your paths (specially during weekends, it's full of pedestrians), so I usually don't use them (at least in the morning, during my evening commute there's usually too much traffic so the path is faster lol). Some drivers are so 'kind' to remind me where the cycle path is, sadly I don't have time to remind them it's not mandatory for cyclists to ride there. Great video, thanks for sharing!

We have the same problem with bike lanes. Fortunately bike lanes extend across side roads here, so we don't have to give way to cars every few hundred metres, which makes a massive difference. Our cities are also fairly compact and where I live there's plenty of rural traffic free routes if I want to go on a proper ride.

Some of the bike paths here curve and have stop points for cars to turn, essentially giving them right of way every few hundred meters. Very annoying 🙄

I did a bike tour in the south in November. Most bike lanes were just like that - not very well designed and better avoided if possible. The exception is Matsuyama in Ehime, someone in that city really knows what they are doing, the layout and design is very good, far better than Osaka, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Beppu, etc.

Anyway, I plan to use a bicycle to commute to save money since I'm a self-supporting student. I'm torn if I'll invest and look for a second-hand MTB or just go for the cheaper option, mamachari. Your advice will greatly help. Thank you!

I mean, they are crossing the road during red, stopping their motorbike/car on bike lane without use their blinker first. Or even worst, two motorbike are blocking the bike lane. I do agree with you regarding the pitfalls of riding in bike lanes. Unfortunately, though, just as much as we have non-thinking drivers, we also have non-thinking pedestrians and non-thinking cyclists. Whatcha gonna do? Perhaps riding in traffic where you are is doable, but where I am, you need a paid up insurance policy and body armor. By the way, my friend's wife lived in Nagoya for awhile before she married, and she still has a family member living there. _Z4P_ DuSTeR Buychari is awesome and saved me last year, after I blew a tire and trashed my rim on a downhill, 35km from home. I was able to ride my rim 15km to one of their shops and get a used Mavic Kysrium wheel and tire for ¥6000 ($55) including the labor to swap out my cassette and tire. They have great deals, selection, and service.

I avoid bike lanes here in TX. At most they are only a couple feet wide and they are never maintained. Between broken bottles and crumbling tarmac they are a hazard. I just stay on designated biking routes and take up the lane. What are the legalities of cyclist/pedestrian collisions there if they encroach the bike lanes? Are they at fault or are the cyclists? Or does it parallel the proportional fault that they use in auto collisions? Thanks for the vids. These keep the itch scratched until I can move back to Japan. And your vids helped confirm this is the best decision for me once I finish this PhD. So thanks for that. If you have time, I would be interested in a non-cycling vid on your experience teaching in the university system there, as that would be my most likely avenue. Are research faculty segregated from teaching faculty in the new permanent residency laws? Thanks again.

Thanks! As far as I understand, pedestrians always have right of way over cyclists. I briefly talked about my university experience in my video about "quitting" my last job. To sum up my thoughts, it's by far one of the best jobs for foreigners in Japan, but unless you are lucky to find a tenured position you'll be stock hopping universities every 4 years and it gets more competitive every time unless you're female. You should have more opportunities with a PhD though, good luck!

Hello! Before I want to go to Japan coz I like cycling and Japan is a great country. and then I went here in Amsterdam I loved the cycling paths and the bikes are the priority than motorized vehicles even pedestrians?(i dont really know) :D. but the weather here is always unpredictable thats the problem when I go bike to work. yea it is think it is kinda annoying when the people are not aware that they are walking in the cycling path and it is making it more dangerous for the pedestrian and the cyclist, that s why cyclist are ("maybe") choosing to ride in highway. And I know that Cruise sensei already know this but for the people who are reading this try cycling it is healthier and greener! be safe. and Cruise I am just wondering if you are drinking water when you ride because you talk a lot when you ride, If i was the one doing that, my throat would be super dry.

The fenced cycling path is such a ridiculous idea. I do not feel safe when I am trapped in a small cycling lane, especially since casual cyclists here in Japan just ignore rules and directions. And I can not get outside of a lane easily if I want to turn, change direction, visit a store and etc. Dedicated cycling roads in Japan are poorly designed, expensive and pretty useless. I much prefer cycling lanes in Saitama Prefecture - they just reassign roadside for cyclists, it improves awareness of drivers without spending a lot of money. It is the only prefecture I know which tries to be super bike-friendly. Also, Japanese architectors tend to mix sidewalks with cycling roads, which is also a stupid idea. Especially when they try to make a combination of tiny sidewalks with tiny cycling lanes.

It's no good when a few people ruin it for everyone :( There are some pretty nightmarish bike lanes here in Japan.. Check out my Lake Biwa video if you haven't already.. Blue lines painted on top of a road barely wide enough for a car that changes widths randomly and lots of traffic 😬
