I've stained around 200 log and cedar sided homes now using Sikkens and TWP, the former being of no good anymore with their new VOC compliant formula. We media blast, sand, then stain. I can say that spraying and back brushing when done properly has the same effect as simply brushing the product in. He says so in this video and I completely agree...when you skimp on the backbrushing and don't work the product in, it won't penetrate far enough into the wood to provide the protection TWP is formulated to give. On some of the larger jobs we do this guy would take over 100 man hours to stain by hand. Soffits, rails and other intricate parts would be very time consuming. Save the time and energy and spray/backbrush. One other thing to note is how important things like temperature, wood type, wood age and conditions and their relative porosities in how effective TWP will be on a home. Those factors have way more of an impact than the spray and backbrush vs brush debate.

Another thing to add is the whole second coat debate. I'm in the boat that one coat for the first application is good, let it fade a couple years, then apply a maintenance coat. The second coat Chuck applies creates a film over the first, penetrating coat of TWP. This hinders the breathability of the wood and in some cases may cause rot (looking at you permachink).

Thanks for showing the correct and best way. Brushing will always get more in the wood than spraying. Spraying will get more on the wood not in the wood.

I’m a do it yourself kind of guy. I use a pump sprayer to get the product on, but I go back with a brush and I work that product in. Saves a lot of time dipping the brush into a pale. But like I say, go back and work the product in with a brush.

Definitely back brush but a spray gun in the hand with the right tip and pressure eliminates the time it takes to dip into the bucket. Same end results in a quarter of the time

Spraying stain is just a quicker way of applying for you to follow with brushing. Go ahead and spray with two or more guys behind back brushing. Also that twp is a penetrating stain. It’s similar to ready seal. Which I highly recommend. Otherwise great video. But yes to save time which is money. Spray and brush.

I f i was getting my log cabin treated and the two choices i had where ''spray and brush'' or brush only i would go with the brush on. More product on the timber and the attention to detail while you are brushing it on wins it for me hands down.

Brushing is the only way to go, Period. I just did my 2 tier deck. Sanded each board with a 6 inch orbital bc the sander I rented from Home Depot didn't do shit after 5 hrs. Then I brushed Each board with a Miniwax red oak stain, got every groove , crack, etc, Came out incredible. Guy who did it yrs ago used a roller and got spots and shit everywhere, the brick and between the boards were spotted and not even covered. This guy is doing it exactly how it should be done. If u want to spray this or roll it, do it to your own house. I will never let anyone use a spray or roller. U want it done right, do it yourself...GREAT JOB !!!

@spearmintmonkey- If your log home currently has a stain on it already, we would recommend using our product called 'Safe-Strip'. It will remove oil-based and water-based semi-transparent stains and sealers. If it is weathered wood that needs to be brightened, we have a new product called 'Restore-A-Deck' that comes in a two bottle kit that includes a cleaner and a brightener. More information can be found on our website listed above and click on the Exterior Wood Products link on the left.

Please forgive me if this was asked already but.... We made some large trees into beams for a cabin base. Do I need to let them cure a few seasons before I coat them or can I stain them after a few months? Right now they even have bark on them I guess I need to debark them. Any insights would be appreciated. Thank You for sharing your video.

To clean and prepare the wood we recommend the Restore a Deck kit www.gemini-coatings.com/index.php?architectural/products&a=&product_id=35 , if you have existing stain that is still repelling water we recommend the Safe Strip to pull the old stain out before using the Restore a Deck kit www.gemini-coatings.com/index.php?architectural/products&a=&product_id=34

I have been all over youtube and google and am having a hard time getting an accurate picture of some of the colors. I will be going over NEW pressure treated wood on a deck rebuild. I think I am interested in the Pecan and the Honeytone. I like a more brown look instead of the orangey look. The Honeytone seems a bit yellow but not sure what other options I have. I DO want to use TWP, I am sold with what I have seen and read.

Just saw your video and would like some advice if possible? I just bought a log home in Western Maine. Its dark in color and areas are also bleached gray from the stacking up of snow too I believe. Is there any way possible I could send some photos I took of the house last week and maybe you can give me some advice on how to prep and stain the house? The house has been neglected by not being protected from the elements. I just hope I can bring it back to a beautiful color! Hope you can help!!

Hey Chuck, I wished we could talk. In the process of building a log cabin. However I am agonizing about weather to use hard wood or soft. I live in Missouri where Oak is abundant and there is a log home company that builds them pout of oak. They claim the wood is extremely termite and bug resistant and then I talk to other people and they say termites love oak. What type of wood did you build your house out of.

Thanks for telling the truth. Telling people the truth might not always get the fastest results for them if they believe it, but the truth is always the best way no matter how long the results or how slow people catch on to it. I wish preachers of the gosple of Jesus Christ would be as honest, straight forwad, and to the point as you are in this video. One thing for sure, eternity is straigt forward, and how people treat the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the only way to God, will land them in Heaven or Hell wether they like the truth or not.

Spraying or brushing stain ? the debate has been going on for ages. I personally like to brush all houses and stain pad my deck boards.But it all comes down to what is best for you and your business. Just because someone else sprays their stain does not mean I should. I fell that I can command a better price and make more money by brushing.

Apparently you must know the type of painters that I refer to as WalMart painters. I've stained 100's of log homes here in Montana and on every single one of them I've employed an airless sprayer. Like your dad, you too are bias and incorrect. An airless is used to lay down the product and then you back brush vigorously and NOT in the dainty fashon as you exhibited. A sprayer is much more quicker and efficient and will get into cracks & seams that a brush never will. Pro painter for 22 yrs.
@attrezzopox
@attrezzopox 8 жыл бұрын
I agree. It doesn't make any sense that simply brushing as opposed to spraying and back brushing would be better in any way. Spraying forces paint into crevasses that are inaccessible by brush, vigorous backbrushing will wiggle the woodfibers to work the product into tiny cracks and pores on the surface where it's going to see the most impact from weather. First brush vigorously AGAINST the grain, then vigorously WITH the grain. Going against the grain will do the most to wiggle the woodfibers, going with the grain as the last step will sop up extra product and pull the product with the grain for the right look. Of all the methods rolling would be the worst, then simply spraying (no backbrushing), then simply brushing. But the best method is a spray with vigorous backbrush. You don't have to sit there brushing forever, so long as you uses some elbow grease.

@miked8227

Wouldn’t matter what method is used to get the stain on the wood because the wood doesn’t care. Just make sure you help the stain penetrate with the end of the brush . Don’t pull the stain as much as you push it to work it in initially then give it the final pull with the grain. And don’t stain in direct sunlight!
