You don't have to say anything, I think it's more important to just be there for them if they ever need someone to talk to, especially if you're a close friend of them, although usually a depressed person prefers to be alone, it's really hard to deal with them. I think it can't be helped but you can encourage them by saying things that would make them feel their importance, not by comparing them to another person,
