For me, after 20 plus years experimenting with both brands, it's always Victorinox on the TOP. My Leathermans break and rust, my Swisstools with the same amount of use and abuse, work and look as good as new (literally). The only Leathermans that are decent, and the only that I would suggest, are the older models, (pre removable wirecutters era). The older the better. When it comes to Victorinox, I can't see a difference in quality either it's new or as old as me, they all look and perform the same. If they have a difference in quality, it's too small for the common user to notice, where in Leathermans, the gap is way bigger. Spirit X + Ratchet + Explorer + Knipex Cobra 150, is the best edc tool combo for my needs. Covers so much, in such a little package!

I’ve never owned a leatherman, but I know someone who has had 4, the oldest of which he lost was a good tool, all subsequent leatherman’s be have broken and rusted, pretty much same story as original poster. I’ve had Swiss Army knives since the late 70’s never had a tool break, I did chip the scales once when I dropped it, simple fix to attach new scales, upgraded to plus scales, gained a pen and pin. Knipex cobra xs pliers paired with a Huntsman SAK and the bit driver shown in video is a pretty perfect combination. Swiss and German quality.

I prefer the Victorinox Swisstool Spirt XC. It is the one with the partially serrated sheepsfoot blade that has been discontinued. With the addition of the new clip it is in my eyes the best edc for pocket carry. I don't care for the one handed opening blade. I never find myself in a situation where it is absolutely necessary to open the blade one handed. On the contrary, my favorite tool to keep in a drawer or in the car is the Leatherman Surge combined with the bit kit. I do not own any imperial tools as I live in Switzerland. So those that come with the Surge are very handy for the occasional freedom screw.

Totally agree. I’d also like to add that if Leatherman customers were more honest to themselves, they wouldn’t allow leatherman quality control and manufacturing drop so hard in the last few decades. @@chrisnelson1935 all the complaints I personally saw from my models or friends/colleagues models: - tip not touching perfectly (leatherman won’t fix it); - blade HT off (breaks); - pliers HT off (breaks, especially on twisting, leatherman fixed but said that you shouldn’t twist with their pliers, which is absurd since you are removing 50% of the work a plier can do); - multiple surge scissors either don’t cut because of weird sharpening angle or they have a space between blades and softer materials can’t be cut because of this; - frame got cracked when closed because of bad quality issue; - pliers, scissor and knife play are not unusual; - bit drivers are hella soft and will break after not much use; That’s just from the tip of my head, I’m out right now so I will add more and ask for my group of friends (we are all multi tool collectors) to add what problems they had, but it’s not unusual to have problems with Leatherman. I get it that they want to cut down cost so quality control isn’t as good and mass produced items will have problems more often than not, but it’s maddening how many problems I found on several tools during all my collecting years. I won’t even touch what I read on forums because it’s not fair since I don’t know the users, but I know my friends and I know how they use their multitools (mostly for collection) and we talk when we find issues. There is a KZbinr (maxlvledc), good lad, that pointed out some of these issues on brand new leathermans he bought (out of the box), so it’s really not that uncommon to find issue with their tools. I had the Wave first because the Spirit initially only had the butterknife as it's knife which was not going to work for me just in case I don't have my regular knife on hand, but when the Spirit X came out with the spearpoint blade, I immediately got it and never looked back or got confused to which plier based multitool I'm carrying from now on. What mattered to me is not what the Spirit did or didn't have but what it didn't do to my barehand. I can use the Spirit barehanded without the fear of pinching, the pliers' pivot point don't stick so much that my hands and fingers get tired of opening it and you can squeeze the handles, again barehanded, really hard without the tool leaving marks on your palm and fingers. I have a separate knife and I can always bring my diamond sharpener that fits in my pocket if I need to, but I don't have a spare right hand to bring with me. It wasn't the steel, it wasn't the implements all being outside or even the shininess of the tool, it was the comfort and ease of use that really made me chose the Spirit X.

The thumb tab on the blade of the Vic makes the blade considerably shorter if you are making through cuts. Slicing an apple would make the tab hang up as it passes through the apple. The curved handle of the Vic is a great design in that it prevents you pinching your hand if the pliers slip, something I’ve done a few times on the Wave. i have the tti and MXBS, the file on the tti charger is just trash, the diamon coating is barely there after few times of use (less than 3), tried to sharpen a drill bit (3mm), and the cross cut side was never sharp to begin with (got the tool brand new). I love the s30v blade and the length of it, and love the gut hook on the charge+ , but that's about it, the glass screw driver bit is waste of space, the sciossr has lots of plays in it although it is longer and opens wider. the tool is notable heavier and fatter. overall , MXBS is my new daily now, nothing to complain yet, otherthan it came with too much oil on it and all the small tools are tight in there, almost fingernail broke tight to get then out.

I really like the older and larger/bigger blade that had some kind of serrated blade I wonder if you could change blades/tools on the Spirit and Leatherman Wave? Of not, they really should have made a Multitool with chargeable tools.😊

Hello, Ben - very good overview - a minor point - you might have shown how the accessories with the tools looked stowed away in their respective pouches...I thought you might be considering that when you demonstrated the case the bits were in...I'm figuring you thought not, as you felt the video was getting long, although I personally would not have minded... @@txtoolcrib if you look at the cap lifter/flathead/wire stripper on the 91mm swiss army knives it is almost identical to the tool on the ST Spirit, but on the SA Knife they actually market it as a wire stripper. This is a very good comparison. I already have the Leatherman wave plus, and used a Leatherman Rebar in the past. But I want to try a victorinox multitool. I know they make quality tools, I have a victorinox swiss champ for more than 20 years, and swiss champ mini. But I was wondering which one to choose from this swiss multitools. But your video helped me. I ordered the mx clip version, because I want the saw blade. And the black version is more expensive, the difference is about 35 USD. Can you tell me if this mx clip version comes with a carrying case?

@fuloplehel2 жыл бұрын
@@Noble_Isaac Hello, I got the mx clip victorinox multitool and I love it. The design, fit and finish is better on the victorinox. Every tool has its own spring, and is accessible from the outside. When you opening and closing tools the feedback is excellent. The only thing that I don't like is the scissors limited opening. But I already adjusted that with a Dremel, and now everything is fine. But is hard to decide which one is better. The Wave plus is a very good multitool with a very good serrated blade, diamond file, bit exchanger. It is my favorite on the jobsite. The Victorinox is my outdoor tool.

They are but they are also heavy duty. I cut through hard stuff better than my surge with that scissor. I really like the scissors on the spirit. However if you need to use it for everyday use, SAK scissor and Swisstool scissor are both better because wider and longer (more cutting space)

Customer service and warranty of Victorinox is miles ahead of Leatherman. Lifetime warranty and free return no question asked. Leatherman's customer service is very bad, they take ages to reply to your emails. Also if you are not satisfied with the tool you have to pay for shipping to ship it back to them. That is no charge on the Vic side no matter what reason. Also from my experience Leatherman's fanbase is more arrogant and not as nice. So for me, Victorinox all the way.

I notice the Victorinox doesn't have a ruler. Also you can carry tweezers in the Wave due to a gap in the butt end. The Style tweezers fit perfectly.
@willb30182 жыл бұрын
Are you saying it doesn't measure up? 😉
@clintwestwood35392 жыл бұрын
The spirit doesn’t have a ruler because it’s more ergonomic than any leatherman (look at its shape, its no competition there). However the other swisstool (the non spirit one), which is the Surge competition, it has a ruler and its probably the best 20cm ruler on any multi tool for hows designed. So if you need a ruler on it, go for the bigger and heavier version. If you want a pocket friendly one, you go for the spirit one.

@@clintwestwood3539 But can you pocket carry it with tweezers.
@clintwestwood35392 жыл бұрын
@@kennogawa6638 If i need tweezers I will just carry a SAK with me. Any two/three layer SAK is so light and so thin that you won’t even notice it. Especially if you go for the keychain one. And again Victorinox tweezers have another level of quality compared to the style (at least mine PS). I don’t see the argument there, I personally don’t need tweezers on a daily base, but with a Victorinox Manager (or any other keychain one) you will get better tweezers than any Micra or Style. It’s all about quality of construction and material, and in that regard Letharman loses on any front in the last 20 years. Victorinox is in another league if we talk about that.
@clintwestwood35392 жыл бұрын
@@kennogawa6638 also I want to add an observation since we are talking about add-ons: the fact that you can put stuff inside a leatherman tool it’s not a good thing if not intended (like SAK scales), it just means that the fit wasn’t well thought and they didn’t optimised the space they had. It’s a compromise people find to make use of the extra volume they are carrying when it’s not used from the company itself. But if they wanted us to put tweezers inside a full sized leatherman, they’d just put them inside or tell you that there is a space for it (like 91mm SAKs have a pin holder but sometimes no pin, it’s still intended to carry a pin, not something people found out to optimise the bad fit). That’s my thought about it. However, again, if you need tweezers, Rambler Manager and/or Minichamp will do a great (better) job. You also get pens et cetera

I received my receipt digitally through email because I ordered it through the webshop. Then I saved it onto my google drive in my "receipts" folder with all the other receipts I have for warranty. If you receive a paper receipt, then you could just scan or photo it and dave a digital version. They would have to accept those too for warranty claims.

Victorinox would not make anything like these , nor would anyone else, if it weren’t for the Leatherman. A Leatherman is also cheaper in price. I have one older Swisstool that I inherited. I’ll stick to my Leathermans. The Swisstool is mostly a pretty paper weight. The tools are hard to access compared to any Leatherman I’ve ever used.
