you call cheerleading a sport, phil?!
@TM-bn8pv4 жыл бұрын
@Smiley L lol, I was a male cheerleader at Penn State....interestingly enough Ty Burrell graduated from Penn State 5 years earlier. Co-ed Cheerleading is tough for both the guys and girls, this coming from someone who played HS Football, Hockey, and Baseball. I lean on the fence still if it's a sport or not. Probably more hanging over the side of it's a sport since we competed. I don't like judge sports, but a lot of them are, so why isn't Cheerleading? So yeah, probably a sport...definitely collegiate cheerleading where you practice 5 days/2:30 hours each day/week, pep rallies, plane travel, football games on Saturday, 1 day off/repeat. It definitely kept me in shape.
@TM-bn8pv4 жыл бұрын
@Smiley L I was fit, strong, when 4 PSU female cheerleaders came to ask me to try out in the gym. At first, I was like "Cheerleading?" I decided to try out as it doesn't hurt to try anything plus we got some great perks as we were recognized Student-Athletes which gave us access to things a regular student wouldn't. The men mainly did stunting (and gymnastics for those guys who knew it) and I had to learn the back tuck. Both were tough. I would see the older, experienced male cheerleaders do these stunts I never thought possible like the Cupie (actually easy compared to the dynamic stunts male/female cheer does), which is what we called when the guy throws the female cheerleader in the air, catches her foot, then holds her up arm extended in the air like the Statue of Liberty (which was a different stunt). Eventually I was able to do that and some other stunts, thanks to my partner who did her tough work in the air. I will say, if we (the men) had to actually do the hand motion cheers/claps and stuff some guys on co-ed teams do, I would never have done Cheerleading. All the most men had to do was stunts (except gymnast guys), back tuck, and occassionally start a cheer through the megaphone. I wouldn't get worked up with these people claiming it's not a sport as what you said is right. People are stuck to their views, luckily I changed once I started doing it.

@Smiley L We all need to try new things, learn, and see the other's POV. Those who claim it not a sport are misinformed and/or uneducated about the sport. Also, spending almost everyday at Camp Woodward in PA in the summer (drive from Penn State) with my partner and other cheerleaders was a BLAST! We had unlimited access (owner is a big PSU fan), but of course spent most of our time in the cheer and gymnastics section. Had so much fun memories from cheering that I wouldn't have had if I didn't go to that tryout. Heck, 4 of us even got the celebrity experience life in Hollywood shooting an ESPN commercial. Lots of fun stories and camaraderie, just like my HS sports. I teally do hold cheerleaders and Cheerleading in high regard. Those girls and guys were the most fit I've seen. Muscle, abs, flexibility, courage to be tossed high in the sky and rely on your partner to catch you if there's a mishap. Some tough injuries those girl's took. I only got tennis elbow from stunting a ton, but the girls got injuries much worse. Tough girls and a tough sport.

SO MANY great Phil Dunphy moments on Modern Family....I don't even want to name any because I'd be leaving too many good ones out. I've often wondered if the show used real-life Ty in the way that they did Eric Stonestreet with Cam (since Eric was a clown and played football in real life). Was Ty ever a cheerleader? Or gymnast? Or real estate agent?
