Tying a Crazy Charlie fly with Barry Ord Clarke

🤔 I was tying this fly about 25 yrs ago without the eyes , an old friend of mine Carl Hanson , a local salty in the St Petersburg Florida area came up with it but we used aluminum foil for the body covered with monofilament, and white deer tail , called it the Crystal Minnow a representative of a glass minnow , works great on sea trout , reds , and snook , 👍🏼

I’m new to fly tying, and I’ve been going out to buy exactly the materials I see on these videos. Result: I have a room full of stuff I’ll never use up. My question is, can I substitute something for the specified rib material? Heavy mono? Thanks! FYI, I love these videos and really admire the quality of your flies-but in the end, I just want to catch fish. 😎

Hi Paul, when you start tying your own flies, its a common mistake to hoard materials, every fly tyer does it! After a while you will come to understand what can be used for what job and what you can substitute some materials for others. One way around this is buy materials with another fly tying friend, this cuts the initial cost in half. Try the heavy mono and see if it works and that you are satisfied with the results. Good luck with it.
