Tying a Hawthorn Fly

I know it only feels like a few weeks since Christmas, but it’s April - and that means we’re just a few weeks from one of my favourite times of the year to fish; the hawthorn fly hatch! Late April for me means frantic dry fly action close in to the banks and under vegetation, as the trout home in on these ungainly terrestrial interlopers. The perfect warm-up for mayfly season!
Hook - Partridge ideal dry, size 10-16
Thread - UTC70 black
Body - choice of black scruffy dubbing or black goose biot
Legs - knotted pheasant tail, dyed black
Wing - choice of Aero Dry or a pinch of white CDC
Hackle - black cock hackle

We don't get Hawthorne flies here 🇨🇦 but we do get a similar fly that has reddish legs and hatches in great numbers so I could adapt but I think this could also be taken as an Evening Caddis. Thanks Doc!
