How to Tie - Tying a Metal Thimble into a Rope Using a Simple Knot (Magnet Fishing) Non Splicing Method.
Fishing Magnets and Thimbles: igkt-solent.co.uk/tying-metal-...
A short while ago I was contacted by a viewer who wanted to know how to tie a rope to his Fishing Magnet, so that it was secure and would not fray. The simplest solution was to tie a Poachers Noose or Scaffold knot around a metal thimble. The beauty of the Poachers Noose is that it will secure itself snugly to the metal thimble. The thimble used in the video is quality stainless steel and does not attract a magnet. I cheaper option may be a nylon thimble.

Btw. What is a fishing magnet?
@KnottingKnots
@KnottingKnots 3 жыл бұрын
@@plemas A fishing magnet is for fishing for steel etc in rivers. In the UK there are a lot of canals, and over the years stuff was dumped in them. So there is now a "sport" of magnet fishing for treasure. The best fishing spots are near bridges, as lots of stuff was thrown from them. You can find stuff from and old shopping trolley to guns and knives etc. There are a number of YT channels on the subject and some of the finds are interesting.

I swear google is listening to everything lol. I recently picked up a cheap £20 fishing Magnet from eBay and wasn't happy with the rope being attached to a D-Ring and that connects to the magnet hoop. So I was doing a search for "how to tie a 6mm rope to a magnet hoop" didn't really get anything but open up KZbin today and yours was the first suggest video to watch lol. Im a complete beginner, so have no idea what to expect, other than others comments that the magnet came off first throw in the water. Hence why I was looking for a stronger or better way to tie the rope to the hoop. Thank you for a clear and precise video.

Could this possibly be used with a shackle for securing an anchor?? I'm concerned the know will slip and I'd like the thimble to protect the line from chafing. The thimble rather than just using a halyard knot with the shackle.. Thoughts???
@KnottingKnots
@KnottingKnots 6 жыл бұрын
I do not see why not. I think the main concern would be to ensure that the thimble is nicely rounded off where it meets the rope, so that it does not cut into it as it tightens. Obviously splicing would be even more secure, as a splice is stronger. There is a strength of knot chart here: igkt-solent.co.uk/strength-knot-chart/

I have tried it a little but you need 100+ kg magnets and waterways that have a bit of history. Most Australian rivers are just dumping grounds, not sights of historic conflict. The knot however is a favourite amongst tree climbers as a terminal knot for fastening to their climbing rope. I still climb occasionally as I approach 60.

I find it slightly odd that the house I live in was built 35 years before Cookie Boy even discovered Australia. I wonder if the history books even teach that now? It is always good to get comments, as I do listen and try to make little changes here and there. When I look at my really early stuff, even that makes me cringe. Do you use knots a lot?

There are plastic thimbles, obviously not magnetic. Additionally, a plastic thimble won't cut the loops as will a metal thimble.

They used this kind in wild west by hanging? Or not?
@KnottingKnots

The hangman's noose is considered to be used for hanging. However, as not all hangings were official, I am sure that other knots were used instead. Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated. Are you more of a practical or decorative knotter?

This is probably acceptable for light to medium loads, but if you put something heavy onto this for a long time (e.g. mooring), the tightening nature of the noose will pull the edges of the thimble against the wraps of the noose, chafing and eventually cutting it. For more heavy-duty applications, you're better off with an eye-splice around the thimble (which obviously takes a lot longer and requires either a 3-strand or hollow core rope). kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYqokmqXedSritU

I can not disagree with you there, but this project was just for a fishing magnet. Thanks for taking the time to share this information, I always love to hear about knots being used!

No need for the shackle. Just spread the thimble out, hang the magnet and bend back close, then tie your knot.

I started a long time ago to "over explain" as I have one subscriber who is blind. He and his granddaughter follow the videos, he listens and she watches. He ties the knot and if he goes wrong his granddaughter corrects him. A lovely little bond must be growing between them? Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated.
