This is one of my go to patterns in both rivers and lakes during an olive hatch. Many anglers believe that trout prefer emergers right through a hatch, not just at the beginning. I must admit I have experienced something similar on numerous occasions, with trout taking emergers with confidence but splashing at adult duns.
This style of emerger is of the CDC loop wing style. I am not sure who came up with the original concept but they deserve great credit for devising such an effective pattern. CDC loop wing emergers work great on midge, march brown and olive (mayfly) patterns. Just vary the size of hook and colours of the dubbing.
