You described exactly the flaws of my game: Floating too much ressources and not having the ressources when they are needed. My take away message from this is to actually redirect villagers to another ressource, learning the numbers for this "modular gameplay" (e.g. 2 on Wood, 4 on Gold for constant Archer from 1 Archery Range) and to be "ahead of the game" (e.g. planning what to do with a building, such as Blacksmith or Unversity, and preparing for that, probably with redirecting villagers.

This video is a literal gold mine, relic, maxed out farm production, and infinite woodline; all in one. Please make more of these. Your explanations make a lot of sense and breaking it down into resources per minute and number of resources and pool setup required to fund the strategy is genius! It's simpler to follow and makes mathematical sense. Not to mention way more easy to adapt.

The big lesson I've learned is that maintaining a moderate-to-good build order throughout the game is preferable over sweating out an ideal "perfect" build order. Like you said, if the general strategy is sound, then a little deviation from the path isn't bad and can actually be good for adaptability. I mean, we've all seen enough games where someone turned around a series of bad choices with one inspired decision - so that we know this is way more an art than a science.

I am an old AOE2 player who played this game a ton as a kid and have been getting back into it (and into MP) now with the amazing new updates. As I've been getting into build orders, it occurred to me that it would be better to understand why the build orders work so we can adapt them on the fly. For example, don't tell me to put 6 on food at the start; tell me it takes X vills on sheep to keep the TC going, Y for Britons, and why it's important to get to that stage of sustainability first. Then I'll know I better get 6 on Sheep right away without a build order. And if you tell me boars gather as fast, and that they're easiest to get under the TC, I'll know what to do next on my own. Food for vills, wood for houses, food for age up, wood for buildings. Boom, I reverse engineered the typical dark age build order. I've been trying to find content that goes into that depth, rather than simply giving build orders. It's frustrating because the pros clearly think this way, so why not make that kind of content? I saw on Reddit that you were supposed to be a content creator who goes into this kind of depth, and this is the first vid I've landed on, but so far I really like what I see. Thank you for awesome content!

Wow. I've always been a very casual player (BF noob stomping AI post imp with a casual 30-50 vils on every res before making military) and only recently started delving into build orders. Still not confident enough with any particular build/civ to want to try ranked yet, but I love videos like this that really deep dive into the math behind eco vs military. This is easily the most clear video I've seen on how to adapt your eco based on any given situation, and I've played around the app a little bit to get a better idea of how many vils should go where. The app is incredible, though I do have a suggestion/request: add in buildings to see how much res to float before investing in a specific military unit. I'll probably end up making a spreadsheet just so that I can wrap my head around the math, and if/when I do, I'd be happy to share if it would save some work adding it into the app (which I now have bookmarked). Kudos and many thanks for the excellent video, gonna subscribe and go check out more of your channel now! Cheers!
@SurvivalistAoE4 жыл бұрын
The app is more for maintaining production, so it doesn't really help with one-time purchases (like buildings or upgrades). Generally if you're adding a new production building, you should try to have most of the economy required to support it before it's finished constructing.

definetly a great video! I'll probably have to rewatch it a couple of times. Lot of number crunching going on so I feel like I lost half the information. If it's possible, could you ever do a live video on this? Where you just go mostly through the eco, for me that doesn't mean the exact amount of villagers but just the general idea. That would help me a lot. I know you already say it out loud during streams, like: I need more on food. But this video made me realise there's more than just saying I need more on food.
@SurvivalistAoE4 жыл бұрын
A lot of the thinking has to be done before you even get in game. Try to memorize how many villagers you need to maintain knights if you're planning to go knights. If you do this for each new strategy that you want to learn, you'll eventually remember the resource balance for each unit. You also have to take into account the resources that you already have when deciding to get farms or production facilities. If you're floating a lot of resources, you can get production up sooner, and then get farms after. It depends on how many extra villagers chopping wood as well. It's pretty complex.
@bont34 жыл бұрын
@@SurvivalistAoE I'll stick with that for now and I think if I pay more attention to my eco thinking about all that it will come to me with experience. Just never thought about it that deep :) Thanks again, also for the quick reply!

What this video says in the beginning about adaptation is why TheViper is the best player at the game. The talents he was born with apply perfectly to the game. If you watch him carefully, now and then he will, while somehow managing who knows how many things in his head, sit back and come to essentially an entirely new strategy adapted entirely to the situation. So, it is not that he is a strategist which is why he is so good, strategists cannot be on Viper's level, it is that TheViper is a technical problem solver. No person unless they have TheViper's skillset can be as good as him. Hera is too fast and competetive. Other players just memorize build orders and offshoots mid-game from their memory. Only TheViper totally re-makes his entire attitude towards the game situation mid-game. What was descirbed in the beginning of this video is what TheViper was made to do. He just by happenstance plays a game that tests this very ability. MrYo was able to start beating him by distracting him so much with pressure, similar to Haong's style, that Viper has no time to sit back and come to a magical solution that no one else can come to to win, the perfect strategy. He throw so many balls into Viper's hands while he's already juggling a dozen, and TheViper can't take his focus off the juggling and go within and come to an inspiration on how to handle a situation. Hera does something similar, but Hera is too brute force. He harasses more, and more intensely than Yo, but Viper still comes out on top over him for some reason. This nature Viper possesses is why I believe he is the best aoe2 player in history, even though Yo has been beating him sometimes lately. The only person who could replace TheViper is someone who has a similar talent set at him, specifically being a very organized mind paired with a strong memory, an aptitude for mechanical thinking, NOT strategical thinking, and a strong intuition, which will provide the path forward at every challenge the game offers. Hera, TheMax, MBL, all these players have talents that can make them good at different thing, but TheViper reigns as king in this specific video game.
@LightGreenCorona4 жыл бұрын
Although this a very nice narrative, I don't go completely along with it. Viper is the best player, no Daut about that. But not just because of some magical talent. He is super fast in clicking and executing, just like Hera, maybe a little less. And Hera is not just brute force. He knows how to adapt as well, almost on Vipers level. Furthermore, many things, especially in a complex game, come down to experience. And this is the only very exclusive trait of Viper in my opinion: He still learns from experience. By playing non-Meta, civ wise and strategy wise. So, basically, he has seen so much of AoE2 that he has seen a solution for almost everything. Your opinion seems a lot like the Guardiola-Klopp-rivalry in football: One is cold calculation, the magician, the philosopher. The other is pure passion, heavy metal football, brute physicality. In fact, their teams have so much more in common.
@serotonin_dopamine4 жыл бұрын
@@LightGreenCorona I think both you and Kozy are right in this and we see very similar things across other competitions. I honestly believe a similar comparison to Viper and AOE2 is Magnus Carlson and Chess. It is very well known in the chess community that with the advancement of computers that deep memorization of the lines has occurred. It is not uncommon for perfect lines to be executed through the 20-30 turn range in today's play, especially in longer time controls. Magnus is able to do this himself with exceptional ability and so is many of his competition. Where Magnus was able to particularly separate himself was past the lines and the late end game. He was able to grind down the opponents and make them uncomfortable in messier games. He has such knowledge of the game and the mechanics of the game that he can simply see moves his opponents cannot. He is willing to not play the perfect line in an attempt to make his opponent uncomfortable. There are a lot of similarities here to what Viper does in AOE2. Viper is able to play with the best when they want to play meta or very well explored strategies of the game. His mechanical skill is very top-notch, probably not the best anymore, but he is no slouch. Where Viper is able to separate himself is when things get abnormal and things drift from meta. His deep and intuitive understanding of the game is still what separates him from others. He might, and does, lose some straight meta matches as players have been able to narrow, and surpass, his brute mechanical skill, but I think Viper stands alone at the deepest intuitive understanding of the game. I see this same with Magnus who has had some close matches and has even takes a loss or two here and there, yet remains at the top. Viper has had a down 2020 comparatively to his previous greatness, but he is still very solidly in the top 4 objectively and subjectively at number 1 for me.
@CirrowProductions4 жыл бұрын
@@serotonin_dopamine It is not understanding of the game that causes him to have his intuitions, it is that theViper can think intuitively while managing his army and economy. For someone else to do this, they'd have to take their hand off the mouse, pause, calm their mind, and meditate. Viper can do this while playing. As a result, he has the best counter moves of any player in the game. This is why he is a defensive player.
