More FB magic! This is SUCH a brilliant ploy. I've tied (and given away) quite a few. It seems to fish slightly sub-surface after a while, and although you're then looking for the rise pattern rather than at the fly, it's deadly. I'm experimenting with the addition of a compressed poly bead threaded down the post with a thin crochet needle - a fiddly job. A tiny bead of superglue holds it it place. As a suspender it floats really well. The poly bead lifejacket allows less buoyant hackle to be used, too, at the cost of reduced fibre flare - and thus requiring a bit more manoeuvring of the hackle bunch. I must try squirrel tail. If tying for fun, rather than having to produce row after row of flies, your technique offers so many experimental possibilities.

Hi D, that sounds very interesting. I have experimented with various beads but without much success. If you are threading beads onto the post you should try using a floss threader made by a dental company called 'GUM' you get about 25 in a box just for a dollar or so and I use them for lots of tying jobs.

Further to my previous comment - your pattern also works REALLY well with Snowshoe Hare, and the resulting fly seems to be longer lasting. My experience with your original tie is that the deer hair (I've only used winter Roe) tends to crack off gradually.

Yeah, deer hair isn't that durable, but its a real attractor like hares ear for trout.

That is one of the most ingenious fly tying techniques I have seen in years. I am really excited about the possibilities of using this technique. Do you have a name for it? If not, here in Colorado-USA I think I will call it the "Ord Clarke Deer Hair Post & Hackle." What do you think?

Hi Shawn, and thanks! I call the technique a para weld but the fly has no name.
