Tying The Perfect Steelhead Jig With a Scent Collar

This is the perfect marabou jig for steelhead because it has a chenille collar used for applying scent. Putting it on the collar and not the marabou allows the marabou to freely move and have natural movement in the water. Jells and scents are oily and greasy and can restrict the natural motion of your jig. This jig also has painted on eyes. I powder coat my heads for durability as well. Visibility is one aspect to catching fish but scent is another that is key in catching fish.

I just went to fish and check the river. All this below zero temperatures have everything iced up and covered up. As soon as the temperatures moderate I’m headed to fish the shelf ice. Stay tuned

I used marabou jigs to catch every type of salmonid that swims in the Great Lakes. I used crystal chenille for a body, maribou wing over and flashabou tinsel over the wing. They work! Good luck with those steelhead.

Looks great! I used to tie flies, but sheesh...I bet not since the 1980's. I still have the stuff, and it was kind of fun to catch fish with flies you made yourself. Cindy doesn't like to fish, so I've kind of gotten away from it. I buy a license every year, but I don't think I've gone in two years now. About the only time I go is Labor Day Weekend up to Iron lake......didn't go this year, or last year. I miss it!

What is your jig brand/type? Or, did you pour your own lead on a particular type of hook?
