I'm saying this as a black female black women unfortunately tend to be the most insecure against other black women and this is worldwide because in our culture very few of us are really "winning" like that seeing a young attractive black women being celebrated living her best life is triggering for a lot of them I remember they did this to Beyonce and Rihanna and most recently Lori Harvey Tyla was out of pocket yesterday and as a fan I really don't think she would have done that to Sabrina Carpenter or any other white artiste but my hope is that she's young and she'll learn and I hope she ignores the trolls online a lot of black women dragging her would feel more comfortable seeing as a baby momma to some drugged up D list rapper and that's just facts but she does need to come correct in the future and I think she will

I agree with you. I also think many American women don’t realize that women in other countries, even if the living conditions are not what we consider ideal or whatever, have a confidence level that is unmatched. As in they don’t shrink themselves to fit into a certain box so when they come over here with this open confidence, I really think it Makes the audience feel like she needs to pipe down, but really why should she? She’s at the top of her career right now. When she the most confident receiving award?

@@Model_Roe I'm saying this as a black woman that has worked with a lot of white women/ non-black women, that "mean girl, nice nasty, hateful to other women energy" is a cultural norm outside of the black community more than you think. Others tend to handle people they literally hate (especially other women) in a covert, passive aggressive & political way instead of how upfront most black women are. It's the same thing, just cultural differences.

Short story but I've "met" Tyal before at a casting in like 2019. She had the same energy, her confidence was so high and authentic I went home and told my mom about "this girl" at the casting who just gave star power. I didn't even talk to her but you could tell she had a clear goal and idea of herself(not rude or as if she thinks shes better than the next from what i could tell). I would like to also add, most South Africans have alot of confidence. It might not appear the same way in everyone but we all have a real sense of self. Lastly, I think she's humble but not modest enough for people. And honestly that's their problem, she's winning and that's because of her confidence.🎉

I actually have zero idea how to feel about Tyla right now. I feel like sometimes people are obsessed with humbling other people. And I feel like some people are constantly looking for a way to bring her down. However, that situation with the award was weird once you realize she held every other award she’s gotten, including that grammy. And then my whole thing was like, if you couldn’t hold it what makes you Halle could?!? I think the reality is that only certain artists can get away with a certain type of persona. The rihanna comparisons are definitely hurting Tyla’s career. When rihanna had her mean girl era (which everyone forgets about) people still stood ten toes behind her to this day. I will say the one thing I don’t like is when people think their dislike for tyla warrants them to be xenophobic. If you have an issue with tyla then you have an issue with tyla. That doesn’t give you the right to stereotype every single African and African artist. I think Tyla’s issue is she’s not crossing over to American fans properly the way rihanna did. I think the questioning of her race and how she responded hurt her and it’s been lowkey downhill since then. I don’t wanna assume she was trying to be rude but like…as someone who has been that friend who is always holding other people’s stuff like i’m some dehumanized prop, yeah it wasn’t received well.

The answer to the question at 20:45 is that coloured people are their own ethnic group here in SA and they're generally from the Western Cape where a lot of countries such as Netherlands, Portugal, England have interacted with native South African people, respectively the Khoisan as well. So, I believe Tyla is referring to her greater ancestry because of the backlash that she has received from identifying herself simply as coloured.

No matter how pressed certain individuals are over tyla (and anybody else, for whatever reason they feel to) it’s literally not bc she’s oh so beautiful. I’m not saying she’s not, but not liking her for whatever reason it is, does not start or stop at her being physically appealing-and that’s face, skin tone, and body. @@InAllHerGloryIt’s not delusional. While people may bring up any reasons etc as to why they don’t like her, little do you know when you have biases towards someone it GREATLY impacts how you react to things they do. So if I’m intimidated or jealous of someone for WHICHEVER reason it may be, could be because she’s attractive, could be due to her confidence, or likability, that will influence my opinions on actions she takes. Versus if I had a positive bias towards someone i will create excuses for them. This would only be called delusion if this statement was being made towards someone that genuinely did something wrong.

My problem is that Americans are obsessed with humbling this girl because they think she should be grateful to them🗿 another thing is they are threatening her career almost like they gave it to her. It’s so bizarre to watch. Like the moment someone does not conform to what they think is stereotypical of Africans they wanna be up and arms about it like ? 🗿 it’s very weird how much they want her to be tail tucked and thanking everyone she passes by so much so they nitpick everything she does. Like you have money- you're getting fame, if you really can't hold your own award then start working out cuz like 😭 Idk in a way to me I see it as like, "I wish I could hold up things with ease why are you pretending rn- this feels a little bit insulting." But again that's because I have a medical condition- I don't necessarily have the same options as Tyla would [as far as I know/I can't work out consistently]. The way she looks is not far off from how Indigenous South African Khoisan people look. They are naturally her skin tone. Unless Blk South Africans feel erased by coloureds, other Africans do not feel any way because we are so far removed from another countries culture/tribe/race dynamics. Africa as a continent is incredibly diverse and I don’t think people from Nigeria, Morocco, Sudan, Ethiopia, Tanzania feel like she’s erasing them because she’s not representing us. She’s representing her country South Africa. Because African diaspora in America/South Americas/Carribean Islands descend from West and Central Africa they tend to think that is the default “African phenotype”, when they really all came from one area. Africa is very diverse in appearance, culture, history and most Africans are proud of that. The erasure of AA features is an internal issue and definitely very real, but I feel like it’s being projected onto Africans.

0:20 I agree with this tiktok. I love how confident Tyla is. I don't believe she's malicious in any way. But she did kind of radiate "I'm so small 👉🏽👈🏽 energy. She did politely ask, but still. It just seems like everyone around her is a bellhop who is expected to work for her. From her being carried up the stairs at the met gala to this moment at the VMA's. Like she IMMEDIATELY turned around with the award as if she expected someone on standby to just hold it for her. So you can tell she's just used to that. Again: I think Tyla is beautiful, wicked talented, and she seems pretty genuine. But it's about impact over intent. Good intentions, yes. Bad delivery/the way it came off, yes. It just didn't come off right. Like I've watched PLENTY award shows. I've NEVER seen a single celebrity be like, "Omg, my award is just sooooo heavy, can someone please hold it for me?" Being colourd has nothing to do with the colour of your skin. You get colourd people with different skin tones varying from dark to light. It's about your heritage and multi- racial ancestry. Tyla did an ancestry test because of all the questions around her raceial background. In South Africa, race is classified differently due to our history of colonialism and apartheid. This is a term used by other racial groups in South Africa to refer to mixed race South Africans, and it's a term we colourd people have accepted and owned for decades. Colourd people don't see themselves as better or less then anyone else. We see ourselves as people of equal stranding with other racial groups, and we most definitely do not deny our Africaness or black heritage.
