From what I can gather from enemy dialogue when you kill them in combat and the intro, Tyler wants revenge for his father neglecting him, and sees the people in the forest as his father’s friends thanks to his poor mental state thanks to what I assume to be birth defects or brain damage from injuries in his infancy, poorly treated since he crawls out of his room bloody. This gang of people apparently took over and revitalized the forest, even if the water is still far from pure, and killed the people who previously lived there. Tyler was maybe one of the gang, and is killing the fuck out of the other members, who never liked him much anyway.
