In context with the album, "Glitter" is the song Tyler made for the guy he fell in love with & left on his voicemail at the end of "November". That's why "November" ends with him going to voicemail and "Glitter" ends with the person's voicemail being full. Tyler never got the chance to really tell that person how he felt & the album kinda plays out like a movie with a cliffhanger, giving no solution to Tyler's dilemma, with the last track acting as credits so you can do whatever & "Enjoy Right Now, Today."

You are dead on in saying this album sounds like old Hollywood. In the interview that a Tyler did on his KZbin channel titled “FLOWERBOY: A CONVERSATION” he said that a lot of the tracks were supposed to sound like an old movie soundtrack. See You Again sounds like something that would play as you walk up the steps to Cinderella’s castle, Who Dat Boy sounds like a horror movie, etc.
@swishyo4312

Jon, loved your reaction on the album. Glad you liked it! Its one of my favorite albums from last year. The last few tracks you mentioned, Glitter and Enjoy Right Now, work like this: on the end of November, Tyler is talking to his lover. well, not really his lover, actually the person he mentions on See You Again. Anyway, he says he wrote a song as a declaration of his love for that person but he's too shy to sing it face to face (not just in the context of the album. Tyler's been wanting to do more melodic stuff with his voice since forever, but he was very concious about it and how people are going to take it), so he leaves a voicemail > "Hello, no one is available to take your call" > That takes us to Glitter. Glitter is the culmination of the whole album. its the key moment after all the pondering and self discovery Tyler goes through on the album (many talked about him 'coming out' as gay or bi, i dont think that really matters in the narrative, but Garden Shed is the center of that theory) after all that build up, Tyler is finally going to tell this person how he feels. He sings his feels and insecurities into the track hoping for the best, but... "We didn't get your message, either because you were not speaking or because of a bad connection" *Fuck- (now if you play Foreward right after this what do you get?) -ing bitch FUCK!*. All for not! Well, to me, the album doesnt have a real ending. thats the twist: we dont know how it ends. Tyler may never truly declare his love for that person, he might be on an endless journey of comtemplation and hesitation or attempt and fail. sort of like an open ending for an album. i think its pretty cool. The thing with Enjoy Right Now is that Tyler has said it himself too: thats the credits. the whole album is like a movie (pretty much every tyler album has been a movie) and if you want, the album can end there. where what happened after glitter doesnt really matter and you just enjoy day after day moment after moment. holy shit i got carried away. i hope anyone reads this. sorry for any typos or weird grammar, hope you get to enjoy the ending of the album more the next time you listen to it, Jon

On what you were talking about at ~ 23:20 I really feel what you’re saying and there was a similar sort of message in Mick Jenkins’ new album. This is the quote you reminded me of: You basing everything you know about me from moments/I'm more a compilation of composition/ it's complicated

I’ve been listening to this album over the past couple days and wow is it impressive. Such a unique feel for the album. It isn’t fully laced with your regular rap tracks. It is more mood music. Obviously it does have bangers and traditional rap songs but they fit into rest of the album deceptively. It’s difficult to describe. But it sounds great. A real enjoyable experience. It’s a journey. Tyler is so versatile. Highly recommended.

I know this is a bit old but I think the context of Glitter is very important to loving it. November ends with Tyler speaking to another person over the phone, who hasn't answered, either because they aren't there or because they don't want to hear from him (the ending of Glitter seems to indicate the latter) saying that he wrote a song about them, and wants them to hear their opinion on it, and so November ends with the voicemail telling him to leave a message. Glitter then begins, implying that he's playing it over the phone to leave it on their voicemail; a wholesome song confessing his feelings to the person he's calling, saying that they "Light my fireworks, I feel like glitter; and everytime you come around I, feel like glitter", telling them in no uncertain terms that he loves this person deeply and wants to start a relationship with them (or, more likely, they already had been romantically involved and had since separated, indicated by November's potentially double-meaning lyric of "take me back") Then Glitter ends with the voicemail coldly informing him that it did not save the message either because he "wasn't speaking or because of a bad connection". Bad connection, yet again, a possible double meaning, telling Tyler that him and the person he wrote the song about are really not compatible and he should give up. I wrote way too much here honestly but Flower Boy is one of my all time favorite albums, and November/Glitter especially is probably my favorite back to back tracks in all of music, with this narrative of lost love only hinted at in the outros of each song.

I think you'll get Boredom and Glitter more as you listen and acquaint yourself with the lyrics. The album is really sad. He speaks on loneliness and failed love, the latter being a particular focal point of the album. You'll notice in the second verse of November he's telling this person he's in love with that he wrote a song about them and that he's gonna play it for them over the phone or leave it on the answering machine if they don't pick up. That's what Glitter is, it's the song he's playing for them. That song breaks my fucking heart because it really encapsulates the high of being in love with someone followed by the depression of heartbreak. The contrast in the sample of him saying "how you feel?" in the first chorus versus when the sample re-appears after the song has slowed down. That breaks me. "please don't save me"

2:17 Even though you caught the chain and slave bar, I want to shine a light on the "How many slaves can there be till' Nat Turner arrive." He name drops Nat Turner who led the Turner Slave Rebellions in August of 1831, hell of a thing to say on your studio album. Afterwards the fear of similar rebellions made other slave owners crack down on their slaves who had nothing to do with Turner, 120 free and enslaved black people were killed and there were laws against the education of all black people enslaved or not, the congregation of black people without white supervision, and that white ministers had oversee all black churches. I know not what that has in conjunction with the album, but it's a piece of history and it's cool to me that he named it in his album.

man i'm really sad you didn't fuck with garden shed that much, probably my favorite song on the album, being that it's basically Tyler's coming out song. and the instrumental, the chord progressions, both of their vocals, Tyler almost sounds like a different person on this track, love it. the "kissing white boys since 2004" line wasn't the thing people were surprised about with this album, he's said a bunch of shit like that in the past.

Enjoy right now, today is meant to be a sort of 'credits song' for this album and it it really grows on you especially when you realise Tyler produced it himself and most of the album as well. Just shows how talented he is

simon took on earl and you took on tyler. really crazy hearing the albums for the first time. They both seem to be emotional in a way. I'm not sure if tyler is depressed though or maybe just wanted to say how he is handling life.

the first 4 songs on Jaden Smith's SYRE album are called B.L.U.E. and they flow right into each other. I recommend you listen to all 4 back to back in 1 video so you get the full effect.

Exit I actually think Watching Movies might be a better introduction album to Mac for Jon. Faces is very abstract and Swimming is more singing Mac... both fantastic albums, but Watching Movies I think is the perfect album to start with for a non Mac fan.

This album is all about the lyrics and how he wants to make you feel with the music. He is basically telling people his troubles and how he feels. It’s about his unhappiness with the material things and the disguise he hides in. There are also a lot of references to him suggesting he is gay throughout more than one track. You really have to dive into the lyrics and the hidden meaning of it because it’s all there. It’s like his diary. For example in the track Garden Shed, the song is about his troubles with his sexuality. If you read the lyrics you’ll see. He also wants you to feel how he feels with the way he brings you down with the music. That’s why the track is mostly the instrumental aspect and all of the lyrics are hidden messages that are hard to catch in a first listen
