@Alfio Gravitas h1z1 was a buggy mess, dev studio issues, but people still liked and played it in 2016. the cartoony look and intense monetization of h1z1 (gambling loot crates galore) was largely overshadowed by a lack of any competitor in the battle royale genre. then playerunknown's battlegrounds dropped in 2017 and it was wildly popular, h1z1 just fell off hard and people forgot about it.

@@offchance789 Not really. A few months after pubg came out h1z1 was actually still getting more popular. But concurrent players dropped by 95% after the combat update in august/september 2017. In the update they effectively changed the core mechanics and then changed them again a bunch of times after that, making the game worse with every update (just like they had been doing forever). The game still had a decent player base in early 2018, only around 10K players but that's the same amount of players they had in early-mid 2016, when the game was actually good. What really killed this game was the devs not listening to their community, making bold decisions and then still not listening to the community for years. But especially when the 2017 combat update released on live servers. People wanted reverts and they didn't do anything with it until it was too late. I played the game in 2019 again and it was actually pretty good, but it just lacked players, no wonder, since this game's name has been dragged through the mud several times and has gained a terrible reputation. But you're kinda right because when h1z1 actually got competitors in the same genre (pubg and fortnite) they just took over the battle royale genre and h1z1 was left in the dust, it was the final nail in the coffin, except for maybe all the following terrible dev decisions.
