45 years ago today, 10 March 1977, I went to my very first concert, ABBA! They played this song and a bunch of others and it was totally awesome. I had seats at the very back, but soon realised I could go stand down the front and thats what I ended up doing. A brilliant show where they totally rocked. The next day my father took me to meet them at their hotel. That may sound like insider stuff, but no, ABBA were so INSANELY popular in Australia at that time that their every movement was in the papers, on radio and TV. They were everywhere. Anyway, I went to that hotel and got to meet them all, got my program and Arrival album signed (by all 4) and I still have them. I even kissed Frida on the cheek! I was one very happy boy that day. I remember I was in grade 6 when it came out & I went into a record shop & the owner was giving his thumbs up to the album this came from to another grown up customer & I had already bought the cassette of this album (ABBA the self titled album) so to me I already knew their music had got me & the 'grown ups' were only confirming what I already knew.l continued to buy all the albums (& a few select singles) as they came out & I'm so glad I got on that ride so long ago & took them seriously through all the highs and lows - Voyage was like an old friend you hadn't seen in years dropping in for chin wag (Australian for friendly chat)

About the costumes, arising from a Swedish tax law regarding costumes, ABBA's stage clothes were outlandishly-designed on purpose… According to the law, as long as the outfits were too impractical for everyday wear and couldn't be worn outside a performance, they were tax-deductible!

@@joekahno Taxes were crazy in the 1970s Sweden, for sure. Economical politics and retorics in general drove companies out of Sweden. But Abba (or Polar Music) were not exactly poor, even in the beginning of their career. So I doubt that story...🙂

It's still the same here in the UK with HMRC. I'm a performer and I've always been able to claim tax deductible expenses for _costumes,_ but not something I might also wear in everyday life. It's been like this for decades. Nothing says that they have to be *_outrageous_* though! 😂 *Deductible:* Period costume for a Victorian play, something set in the 50s. Dr Who, or The Future, wigs, stage make-up, panto costumes...** *Non-deductible:* Jeans and white T-shirt, that nice Hermès bag you've had your eye on. Unless you can claim you'd otherwise never buy such clothes, nor wear them off-stage/set. **I may have shoehorned the occasional item in the past, M'Lud... 😳👜🛼

One of the reasons they weren't as popular in the US as they were internationally was they only did one tour in the US in 1979. It was part of an international tour. I also think that their music at the time was very different from what Americans were used to. It was only later that they were recognized as great songwriters, musicians. and just how great the gals voices were.

@@mobychima1087 Yes, that’s true. I was tempted to name them all. SOS was a big favourite of mine when I was five years old. But it was Mamma Mia, and it’s video clip, that most people remember from Countdown (Australia’s No. 1 pop music tv show on every Sunday night throughout the 70s and most of the 80s.) The singles were released in a batch with their ground breaking video clips. Mamma Mia was the first to be aired on TV, but it took longer to get to the top of the charts here. In 1975 and 1976, I doubt there was a week without one or two or three ABBA singles in the Top Ten. Fernando broke records for weeks in the No. 1 position (poor John Paul Young had to wait), and it was in the Top Ten for almost my entire first year of school. I remember while at uni in Newcastle in 1988, a local radio station held a survey for the most popular single of all time with the local audience. Fernando was voted No. 1 - and by this stage John Paul Young was a radio announcer with the local radio station. ‘Love is in the Air’ and ‘Yesterday’s Hero’ were relegated by Fernando yet again, 12 years later…. and just like he did on Countdown all those years before, JPY had to announce it.

The clothes they wore were designed for every song they made. This so they wouldn't get taxed as they were for work. They have said that some of them were tight and uncomfortable but the clothes did get them noticed. You could never forget that look.

Another thing today's listeners miss is that ABBA was pre-MTV. Many of their music videos were made as demo's for the purpose of trying to book concerts. There was no market for music videos when they started making them, they were basically song length advertising. If you look at video of other groups performing at that time, what's available is almost exclusively shot at live performances.

I just discovered your channel, more specifically your ELO and ABBA reactions. I did see one comment from someone in Europe saying they wondered why ABBA weren't more popular in the US. I don't know what makes him/her think they Weren't big here. They were one of the top selling pop acts in the US throught the 70's and into the early 80's with numerous Top 40 hits. This song was one of them, peaking at number 32 on the Billbaord Hot 100. I guess they are referring to the fact that it went to number 1 in a number of European countries and Dancing Queen was their only US number 1. Still, that a pop act like ABBA was able to do as well as they did here during the rock driven 70's was a testament to just how good they were.

How i love to watch younger people hearing this older music for the first time. I was born in 1975 and really got in to the music from the 80s as i was growing up two of the first bands i can remember were ABBA and the Village People and i loved their music and still do today and I'm not much of a fan of newer stuff. Hip Hop and Rap really turned me off so i started listening to the older music going all the way back to the 40s and the time of the big band. Today my favorite decade for music is the 1960s there was such progression right from 1959 to 1970 i can't help but to think so fondly of the music from that time.

The U.S. was and likely still is not much into so called Euro-pop. There are the exceptions but mostly they don't meet great success in the U.S.

Ace of Base was a big hit in the US for a short period of time. The problem with Europop is, hit songs like "...Baby One More Time" which were written and produced by Swedish dudes, and recorded in Sweden by an American artist are not categorized as Europop, but just regular POP music. So... artists like Spice Girls, Take That, Backstreet Boys, and many others are not considered Europop, but just artists influenced by Europop music.
