👧 👧 👧 Karen Girl's were active from early 2008, until March 31st, 2009 when they disbanded. That's because the anime they were created to provide theme songs for ended. Sakura Gakuin started in April 2010. Yui and Moa "transferred-in" to Sakura Gakuin in August 2010. Once in Sakura Gakuin, Yui and Moa became members of a few sub-units like Twinklestars (Baton Club), Mini-Pati (Cooking Club) and BABYMETAL (Heavy Music Club). Yui and Moa weren't in any singing groups before Sakura Gakuin, but had done some modeling and TV work. Even before Karen Girl's, Su was in the duo "Tween" with her older sister Himeka as part of her activities at Actors School Hiroshima (ASH). Su was admitted to ASH back in February 2006 with a full year's scholarship when she was 8 years old. Karen Girl's was Su's first pro singing group. Yes, MIKIKO created the choreography for Karen Girl's, BABYMETAL, and for many of the Sakura Gakuin dance routines, including those for Mini-Pati. She's also the choreographer and stage director for Perfume, and for her own modern dance group ELEVENPLAY.

I've wondered what her influence on ASH is, I guess she was a founding dance teacher and probably create the first lessons and 'course ware/teaching tools' for the teachers that came after her ?

This trio was spectacularly talented. Karen Girl's was a guest artist on a children's TV program. Not so amazing except they performed live. No lip syncing. They did the full dance routine while singing live. A few breath issues but otherwise on pitch, on time, and in sync with each other. Three pre-teen kids did that. Incredible.

Nice one. Rick Wagner has explained the time line of Karen Girl's (which predated Sakura Gakuin) and which of the SG sub-units Su, Yui and Moa were members of (these sub-units were all happening at the same time - although Yui and Moa may have joined Mini Pati later than they joined BABYMETAL and Twinklestars as they were in the second generation of Mini Pati ). You were right at the second attempt to identify Su. She was the youngest and shortest member of Karen Girl's, not the tallest. She is the tallest member of BABYMETAL standing at about 5'2" where Moa is maybe a shade over 5 feet and Yui was about 5'1".

I feel it is also important to state that those were the heights of the girls in their late teens, back when they started Yui and Moa probably did not stand much higher than about 4 feet. Su obviously experienced a growth spurt about this time as in Karen Girls she was shorter than Ayami but a year later in SG she was several inches taller than Ayami, I think Ayami is still drinking lot's of milk and getting plenty of sleep in anticipation of her growth spurt. Moa is still very short, even for a Japanese lady she still very short, but not small

You are correct about Yui and Moa joining Mini-Pati later than Babymetal and Twinklestars. They becane the 2nd gen Mini-Pati in the 2nd year when Hana Joined SG. The original Mini-Pati (Nene, Raura and Marina) was a group for just over a year before SG started and was simply absorbed into it as a sub unit.

This was her at age 10 I think, what is crazy is you can actually go back to her at age 5 and see how she was doing then (not yet singing, but some modeling-like work). Because she started at age 3. Yes, in some ways you could say: she entered the job market at age 3.

Ah... Good ol' Karen Girls 😁 I wanna mention that the leader girl, Ayami Mutou, is now one of my favorite solo singers. Between Karen Girls and Sakura Gakuin Japan's entertainment industry got a ton of talented women, from singers to dancers to actresses to models. Sumetal grew up among some of the best artists Japan's Pop scene has to offer, and yet she managed to stand out. Oh, and somebody mentioned Ms. Mikiko Mizuno, the choreographer. I dare say she is the best choreographer in Japan. She worked with this group. She worked with Sakura Gakuin. She works with Babymetal, and she works with the legendary group Perfume.

Thanks for coming back with more BM content related. Karen Girl's was formed in 2008 and introduced as Perfume's little sister, another famous J-pop group with Mikiko Mizuno (aka MikikoMetal) as the choreographer, their songs were also part of the anime series "Zettai Karen Children" (aka Psychic Squad) and Over The Future was the opening theme until the series ended. The group disbanded in 2009 along with the series. Members: Ayami Muto, the one with the two pig tails, another founding member of Sakura Gakuin, she's older than Suzuka and currently got her solo career and active in social media. Yuika Shima, not sure what she's currently doing but she could have been part of SG foundation when started but sadly she couldn't reach for personal issues, later she was still involved in another idols group and was a big supporter of SG and BM, iirc last 10BMY Budokan 2021 livestream she was excited sharing those moments. Suzuka Nakamoto, well i think you already know this little 10 yo Su-chan when this MV came out, also the story about the moment she was met by KobaMetal during their final concert and amazed with her stage presence and talent. @@Codametal Momoe was nine years old when the 'Cling Cling' music video was released, but she looks younger. Yes, Sakia's video was the one on the bus. A couple years later, she was a guest on Perfume's POPFES in 2020, when Nocchi invited Sakia to play a bunch of video games with her. That was also pretty cute.

Moa was personal friends with the short girl in the middle (Ayumi Muto) at this time. Yui's family was very sick in intensive care but she was too young to be with them in the ICU. The hospital staff played Karen Girls for her to keep her occupied. Karen Girls are the group who made her want to be a performer. Ayumi Muto became Sakura Gakuin's Leader (class president 2010-2011). Suzuka Nakamoto (class president 2012). The third girl is Yuika Shima is a honorary member of SG by the fans. As someone said in comments this song was used by Moa and Yui to audition for Sakura Gakuin shortly later to be joined with Suzuka. All 36 girls that were in Sakura Gakuin seem like amazing kids. 5 of them becoming Babymetal 3 orginal trio and 2 avengers. (Maybe more of them in the future).

It's "Ayami", not "Ayumi" Mutō. And it's Yui that she was friends with before Sakura Gakuin began, not Moa. The Mutō and Mizuno families have known each other for quite some time. Moa and Ayami are definitely friends now, and (according to Ayami) they go to places like animal cafés together.

Yui was already in entertainment industry, before that event, she used to do acting, modeling and TV-commercials. She told her agent and parents: "I want to be a Karen Girl's", so she ended up in Sakura Gakuin.

Su was the youngest in Karen Girls. You should see her perform "asu he no tobira" at ASH in 2008, it's her earliest performance that made me shed tears. One of the other singers in Karen Girls was Ayami Muto who joined Sakura Gakuin alongside Su. She is a solo artist with quite a few great songs, like "ベティ (Betty)" and "パラレルワールド (Parallel World)" is an early song from when she was with Amuse. In Sakura Gakuin Yui and Moa were also part of "Mini Pati" and "Twinklestars" Baton Club. I absolutely love the song "Miracle! Patiful! Humberger!" by Mini Pati. You should watch it with lyrics because they are amazing, the best video is on "alena." channel titled "Mini Pati- Miracle ♪ Pattyful ♪ Hamburger".

They did this live before 20-30K crowd and all 3 girls were just stone cold professional about it. It was a walk in the park to them. There used to be a clip on YT where it showed them going thru the tunnel to reach the stage where they popped up. At one point, someone gives them high 5s and really smacks Su's hand hard enough to nearly make her cry

I would start off with a few of their music videos, Friends, My Graduation Toss, Message, Heart No Hoshii. You're going to have a really really cool ride! After you get your fill of the music videos, it'll be time to watch the few live performances. There aren't many due to copyright, but you can find them on ytube. Some of the songs will be performed by the later class years. Can't wait for you to react to them. Edited: I forgot to mention when you watch them live, take notice of how the girls look at each other and how much fun they are having while performing. That gives you just a glympse of the type of relationship they have with each other. And that is one of the best things about Sakura Gakuin.

BabyMetal was Su's 4th band, i think it went Karen Gil's, Tween, Sakura Gakuin, BabyMetal. Ayami Muto was the lead girl here and I consider her almost the 4th BabyMetal, when they hung out around this time it was usually Su+Ayami and Yui+Moa. Su probably visited Ayami in New Zeeland when she went to school there based on a few random comments. Ayami said she had coffee with Moa recently. I would assume all 4 of them are still friends.

I would love to see some Sakura Gakuin reactions for sure. "Ganbare!" or "Heart No Hoshi" to name a couple. Fair warning, though... if you fall into the rabbit hole, it is deeper than BABYMETAL's, as there are so many things beyond the music with SG. Nendo tests are always entertaining, and everything non-music related might be best viewed on your own. There's so much there, honestly. Glad you enjoyed Karen Girl's as well! One of the few times Ayami was taller, or the same height, as Suzuka. It didn't last long.

Rick as always covers most of the key stuff but a few additional. There is a video of them live and it is an arena - yeah even at 10 Su was performing to a huge arena crowd. This is why at 16/17 she was already a total stage goddess. On spotting Su once you see her move/dance it is so obvious which one she is as she has a very distinctive style of movement and of course her voice is very clear on this song. On the middle height girl Ayami Muto (who as mentioned was family friends with Yui's) she went on to become the legendary first president of Sakura Gakuin (the role Su and later Moa both had). Ayami is often referred to as simply Madame President for her founding (and the only 2 term) role as SG President. Both Ayami and the other girl Yuika Shima (who never joined SG) are still active singers. As to her first group I think Tween would count (with her sister Himeka - aka Himetan - a later member of the massively popular idol group Nogizaka46). Of course all her work with ASH (Actors School Hiroshima) predates this and there are a lot of videos of her performing even pre this).

I find it interesting that the Japanese like to use 3 members a lot(I believe 3 is considered "good fortune" in Japan), and avoid the number 4. It's really nice that we get to see so much of the history of the Babymetal members...so many bands you don't get any of it, let alone video. Hi TYLR great reaction. I think watching your reactions to BM and SG stuff puts as big a smile on our faces as the songs put a smile on yours lol Anyhow, one "trick" for finding Su when she's mixed with other girls and not in Su-Metal form is to a)look for the beauty mark just above her lips on the left side of her face. Another trick is to look for the ears. Su has very pronounced ears that stick out. Those are 2 things that should help you locate her.

I have an epic vid of her London gig in 2022 when at the very end she spun round and did this ass wiggle LOL (I was right in front of her at the barrier - damn those VIP tickets cost but hey worth it).

However, now she seems more comfortable in her body and she dances almost as well as Moa, so that is huge praise :)

Karen Girls performed at Saitama Super Arena 2008 at Animelo and there was a video with behind the scene clips. Before the show the two older girls said - (Suzuka was 10yo) Ayami: I might get nervous, but I would like to do my best and make it a great performance. Yuika: I am a bit nervous but I will do my best to make it a fun performance. Suzuka: I will do my best so the fans can enjoy a good performance. (my note: always wanting to give the fans the utmost) After the show - Ayami:At first we were nervous but the 3 of us did our best and it was fun. Yuika: At first I was nervous, but it was really fun. Suzuka: We did it with good feeling so I am happy. (my note: no talking about being nervous, propably she was, and feeling happy that they did a good performance. If that isn't being a pro then I don't know what is) And one more fun story from that same show from r/Babymetal on Reddit from December 2014: ”In today's "Night of Spica," two members of Karen Girl's were eventually on the program together. It was like their first time to work with in 6 years. Ayami was asked to tell one memorable Karen Girl's episode, and she mentioned a Su-chan trivia in their Saitama Auper Arena live 6 years ago. Back then the three were elementary schoolers and had not performed in front of huge audience like > 20k. Ayami and Yuika were kind of nervous under that circumstance. With that said, Su-chan was the one sleeping like a log at their dressing room until an hour before they went on the stage.”

Oh one other amusing detail on fellow Karen Girl's member Ayami Muto - she is the oldest former SG member and also the shortest (yes Moa is taller than her). Ayami is just 149 cm (4 ft 10.6 in). This is also amusing as her two fellow alumni and graduates that year Ayaka Miyoshi and Airi Matsui (both models and and tv/film actors) are around 1.71m and the tallest two of all the ex SG members.
