To see the original Gateshead Interchange - it looked so... exposed, so open, so transitory, certainly nothing like the superb facility that sits there now.

Had so much potential until bus deregulation came along. Combined bus and train tickets are a no brainer. Other city regions, especially Leeds and Bristol could do with a system like this. Would be cool to see a video like this for Merseyrail or Manchester Metrolink. Really interesting seeing these places only years before I was born.

Bus deregulation really took integrated transport planning back 100 years. Nearly 50 years on we are just about re-learning the concept - and that's in places with a strong PTE and public transport interest. I've never seen what that world was like, but SYPTE's Sheffield is one other example of how frequent and cheap public transport can dominate - and was ruined by bus deregulation. Anyhow, I would love to make one of these for Metrolink and Merseyrail, alas, these don't have as much footage around.

@@Isee3 Yeah you're right I think they were originally regulated in 1930 and London Transport formed in 1933. Deregulation was in 1986 not long after the Tyne and Wear Metro opened. Maybe it will go full circle. But for some reason buses and trains were rarely integrated with Newcastle being one of the few. Even in London, fares aren't properly integrated today but there is day and week caps and hopper fares at least. I would have preferred the services they ran before deregulation though as they ran buses up to 30 miles from the city which meant the home counties had very frequent buses unlike now. Also that's a shame, but I look forward to anything you make.

Another beautifully composed production. I love your combinations, definitely evoke a true definition of nostalgia and emotion.

The motorway scheme dreamed up by T Dan Smith in the late sixties would have seen a motorway through Jesmond Dene, the western side of the city centre and through Byker. This was scrapped on cost and environmental grounds in the early seventies, although the CME went ahead and a by pass was built under Jesmond in the nineties. Car ownership levels were lower than average in the county in the seventies, which was another reason for building the Metro, and the British Rail services on Tyneside were becoming poorer and the stations run down.

Great video, although it makes me a bit sad, the optimism that never materialised and the investment that never arrived to many other places
@Isee310 ай бұрын
Thanks! It is my goal to combine optimism with a sad feeling and some nostalgia. One thing I have come to notice finding new source material is how over time the will produce info-films about such projects dies off over time as does the investment and optimism.
