I think technique matters a lot. Technique--including products used, and how often hair is spritzed with water during the week. I have 4c hair, and LOVE wash n gos, and my hair has MUCH less tangles then it did when I did twist outs or protective styles. I use 1 product for my wash n go (gel only) and it lasts the entire week (with no need to put more gel in), as long as I spritz it with water (mornings and nights minimum, sometimes more). Key for preventing knots for me was making sure to "water it" (at least a dusting of water spray, not soaking wet) every day during the week. I wash and detangle once per week, and use only products with natural ingredients. I found it really important to CLARIFY my hair often to prevent product buildup (shampoo with kinky curly come clean; deep condition w/ shea moisture; regular shea moisture conditioner and wash that out, and then use a LOT of kinky curly curling custard to coat every strand, which is pure gold for my hair). I don't use oils/butters anymore as they made my hair soooooo thirsty by the next day, which made no sense to me. My wash day routine now takes no more than 2hours max (can get it down to 1.5 hours, including detangling and deep conditioning time and styling too). Natural hair doesn't have to be so much work. I think many of us will get exhausted and go back to the toxic (possibly carcinogenic) creamy crack (or dreads) unless we learn about ways to simply our routine. Hope this helps someone, as it has helped me!

What I'm glad to see is that people are waking up from the wash and go obsession like you only get your natural card if you can make it work for you. No hate to this video but I wish hair vloggers would stop titling their videos “TYPE 4 HAIR CAN’T DO WASH AND GO’s.” Just because YOUR hair that happens to be type 4 has issues with wash and go’s doesn’t mean ALL naturals with type 4 hair can’t do them. It’s a blanket statement that scares type 4 naturals from even trying them. Videos like these discouraged me from doing them after a few failed attempts until I actually found youtubers with 4b/4C hair do it successfully. After trying their techniques as well as learn about moisture training and figuring out what works for my hair, my wash and go’s have been coming out great and last for days, it stays hydrated much longer than when I do twist outs and no significant tangles/single strand knots. KZbinrs really need to work on their titles to address their particular hair concerns that might not be the case for every single natural. Just my 4C two cents...

It depends on the type of hair you have, the detangling methods you use, how you apply products, etc... For type 4 hair, you need to detangle thoroughly each wash day, and keep the hair detangled using a product with a lot of hold when styling, and apply it from root to tip. Kinky curly curling custard ain't going to cut it for a 7 day wash-n-go. But i agree with you, the wash-n-go isn't beginner friendly and 95% of people will probably retain more length with twist-outs as there is less that can go wrong, but if you can consistenly wash your hair every 5-7 days and have a solid routine, then it can work.

I never follow those extra thousand steps that the natural hair scam community made to make you spend your coin. But overall I do think type 4 hair can wash and go and thrive but they got stop following what type 3 women do because having dry hair mean frequently washing to combat dryness. Not no let gel sit in your hair for a week straight and somehow there will be no tangles from this. I see alot of type 4 women give up wash and go when their hair gets longer and its because they fail to change their techniques. Its not the hairs fault its just the lack of knowledge.

As a licensed cosmetologist who does all kinds of textured hair I have to respectfully disagree. I will start by saying wear whatever style works best for your hair however to attribute loss of hair growth to just wash goes has me giving the side eye for a few reasons: when you overly manipulate your ends with braid outs, twist outs etc you can actually do more damage to your ends believe it or not. Now does that mean that hair won’t grow? Not at all because wear and tear will happen naturally anyway, however it makes me sad to see things like this because you have a platform and many people who don’t know a thing about hair look to you influencers for guidance only for you to put out unfounded things, and instead of letting people know that hair isn’t one size fits all, you put someone else’s hair into a box. While good information is given all novice people are going to get from this is my hair won’t grow unless it’s in twists. Not knowing anything about true hydration and what it even takes to do so at home. But y’all live ya best life....🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️
@yellowpaper35214 жыл бұрын
So how do you get true hydration?
@shvonneboudreaux4 жыл бұрын
Yellow Paper Deep Moisture- Happens when moisture breaks it way through the surface Example: Hair had tons of build up and finally got moisture to get through the hair cuticle. Penetrating Moisture- Happens when moisture fully goes into the hair shaft Example: When deep conditioning using heat or steam to fully get into the hair shaft Sealing Moisture- Happens when you trap moisture into the hair Example: After using leave in conditioners and styling products using a slow oxidizing oil to trap moisture into the hair. Absorption Vs. Adsorption When understanding moisture you must also understand how your hair gets and stays moisturized. For this there are 2 different spectrums, you have absorption and adsorption. Absorption- the process of when a substance passes into the hair and completely dissolves throughout. Adsorption- the process when the atoms or molecules are attracted to and adhere to the surface of the hair. Adsorption break down With adsorption this is all done on a molecular level because molecules like water (H2O) have distinct polarity due to the oxygen atoms being much more electronegative than the hydrogen atoms. The mildly negative oxygen atoms is attracted to the mildly positive hydrogen atoms in other water molecule, and they move close to one another to form a bridge known as a hydrogen bond. Humectant molecules have polar hydroxyl groups (-OH) that also favor hydrogen bonding. When applied to the hair in a styling or conditioning product they can attract water from the environment around them and bring it into close contact with the hair. Summary: You have to have ingredients that attract water (hydration to the hair) Humectants are what keep your hair moisturized Humectant- Ingredients that promote moisture retention within products. Many times the humectant in a product is what we look for to be “moisturizing” however a few things play a factor in what will actually be moisturizing enough for the hair. As previously spoken about porosity is one of the most important hair traits especially when it comes to making sure the hair is moisturized. So some products and ingredients may not work for certain types of hair based upon the type of moisture it needs. Whether it’s deep moisture, penetrating moisture or sealing moisture. Different moisture requirements change for different types of hair. Texture is another part because some textures may need a product that is heavier than others. My hair is coarse the heavy buttered leave in I use on my hair won’t work for someone with fine wavy hair. Just like her products may not give my coarse low porosity hair enough moisture. Climate is the last determining factor for moisture and ingredients because in some high humidity areas you will need products with silicone if you want your hair to last. Often times people who live in the south or very high humidity areas can’t use things like Glycerin high up on the ingredients list because it will make their hair feel rough and dry to the touch. In high humidity conditions humectants may attract to much water into the hair from a wet environment. This can cause the hair shaft to swell and the cuticle to become raised and ruffled. This causes frizz and when hair is overly porous (Higher porosity) with this over use of certain humectants without protein to balance can cause: Loss of elasticity, Frizz, dryness and possibly damage.

Wash n gos are my favorite but I used to think that it was styling that caused the lack of length retention so I switched to braid outs in an effort to hang on to length. The braid outs didn’t help. Then I learned that it was the product choice, most notably leave in conditioners with lots of oils, that affected my wash n gos and my length retention. So now I just use one botanical gel by itself for my wash n gos and I am finally seeing length retention and don’t have to waste time braiding my hair and waiting for it to dry. If you have issues with dryness I’d say use less products on your hair to prevent buildup and redo your hair midweek until your hair can last a full week. If you hair never dries then use a diffuser or hood dryer to dry you hair.

I just recently started wearing my natural hair so I have been playing around with both, the wash and go and twist out and when I would do the wash and go babbbyyyy I agree, I would get a good one and then it would look a mess the next day so I would end up having to redo it the next day and then I would have so much product buildup. You are right, you have to make sure to get the mixture of water, crème, gel just right or you will be looking crazy. My twist outs are life for me and so easy. I also love how I feel that I can make sure my hair is moisturized and oiled, with the wash and go all I felt was sticky, product buildup and sometimes the white casting from the gel. I am so a twist out girl for sure.

Wash and go's ruined my hair (3C/4A high porosity) too. Big chopped again last year. After I wash my hair I never apply water again. After washing I dry my hair 80/90% with a hair dryer, apply hair grease, twist and leave. Next day I apply gel neat, let it dry then apply moisturiser. I'll rotate the products as my hair needs. My hair has never been softer and I wear my hear out all the time. Sheesh I lost so much hair doing wash and go's because my hair was always dry from too much water. I'm glad I finally worked it out and now my hair is thriving. People get to know your hair and listen to what it wants because it will tell you.

Your last comments are very true. (Everything you said was true for me!) I think having varying textures and curl patterns on your head definitely have something to do with it. Seems like people with more uniform curls have consistent results and success. Maybe less tangling? But yes.. that gel will not work rights with the knots. Low porosity, build up- even more complication. I know I have your texture and wash and go’s are now a once in a while thing! Thank you lady!

Like a lot of people in the comments, I've been able to keep length with wash and gos. The key is a good healthy gel that molds the hair, especially the ends, to prevent tangles and therefore breakage. Also, heavy gels stretch the hair. That being said, braid outs are great for length! No knots, stays moisturized, and very versatile styles. Just takes too much time for me. They were great when I was transitioning, but now that I'm fully natural, wash and gos have been healthiest for me, especially once I found a healthy gel.

I just started to do wash and gos on my short, fine, low density, color treated hair. I learned that my wash and go looks best when I use a shampoo and not a cowash. I learned to not use a leave in cause it affects the hold of the gel/custard unless it's made to go in a system, like kinky curly knot today and custard. I also just learned to let it evolve on it's own. Fluffy and and etc would break the cast and cause frizz. 🤗

Honestly, I almost never agree with your videos, but you preaching in this one! My hair was at bra strap length or shorter for the longest. I cut out the wash and gos, industrial gels and wet buns and it changed everything. The single strand knots were basically gone. I didn’t need to clarify as often bc I was using creams and not cheap heavy gels. I could appreciate co washing more. And now my hair is FINALLY growing. I know people hate blanket statements and wanna holler about “everyone’s hair is different 🥴” but you’re speaking facts and this is the quickest way to growth for fine, low porosity, kinky curls.

@keamber.vaughn4 жыл бұрын
Idk why but my hair grows and retains length better with wash n gos and straightening my hair (every 2 weeks during my straightening season). I get less breakage. Less single strand knots. Twist outs, braid outs, and even having twists or braids/French braids in my hair causes breakage. I also get a LOT of breakage if I try to do protective styles. Wash n gos freeze my hair in place to prevent a lot of tangling. And straightening of course helps prevent SSKs too for me. My hair is about 12 inches long. 8 in the crown. I have fine-medium strands, cotton like texture, 4b curls with some 3c-4a mixed in. My ends thin out with twist outs and braid outs.

It's more thank likely an old twist or braid out that she put into a puff. I've worn my hair like hers in the video plenty of times, after my twist out's got a little old. Depending on what products I use my twist outs can and have come out looking like wash n go's. Especially if I'm styling on damp hair with a thick cream ex: the old shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie. That was bae! That product gave me gel like results with out the crunch and dryness.

@Wambui, Not true. I have a mix of 3A to 4A hair, and find wash and goes to be the most convinient thing to do, and quicker than braid outs and twists. I take about 50 minutes from washing to styling with a gel or cream. It can last me between 4 to 7 days, depending on how frizzy my hair gets sometimes if i'm just chilling at home during quarentine. And i don't pineapple my hair to sleep.

It definitely think it depends on how a person handles their hair and what they feel works because my first year of doing wash and goes, my hair was gaining length noticeably just by simply looking at it after a few weeks. Even I said my hair was getting longer. I stopped doing wash and goes because I don't like doing it where I'm at in the winter and started doing twist outs and very rare occasional braids outs. I noticed after taking my twists out that my hair was knotting and drying out once taking it out and I wash and deep condition once a week faithfully. I started having to trim more often I usual try and make the 3 month mark and I was doing it like every few weeks 🤯 Then I remembered that wash and gos work for me. I then realized I used to use a specific gel that was eco styler or wetline and I went to get that and there goes bomb hair again. Now my hair is thriving. It's just now I'm trying to do different styles with it and not just a basic hanging down style.

I’m a type 4 with low porosity and no matter how thick or thin I section my hair, my twist outs seem to dread up and I get a million knots and pull out sooo much hair trying to unravel the mess. Every single time I do it, I think “oh yea, I remember why I never do this crap”. Wash n Gos have helped my hair flourish and my hair grows so quickly. My hair told me when it was time to switch to mainly wash n gos. My hair stylist always comments on how much thicker and longer my hair is during my 3 month trims. A lot of the issues mentioned in this video have solutions. (Clarifying shampoos, easy anti-breakage treatments, using products that DON’T flake b/c not all do, etc.) Sorry this isn’t working for some, but it’s definitely not a problem for all. @PINKDiva884 жыл бұрын
What does diet have to do with gels drying out her hair? I'm confused. What's the correlation between the two? The issues she has is the gel zapping the moisture out of her hair. Which then causes her fine strands to curl up and rub against each. Or thin out and break off. If someone has a fine hair strands that are prone to dryness, wash n go's would work against them (Especially if they have a hard time retaining moisture. Not matter what) Due to the gel sucking the moisture out their hair. If they use a gel that's moisturizing they'd have better luck. But zero hold and their hair wouldn't last for the week. Which would cause them to have to manipulate their hair more than usual. Which would lead to breakage and no length retention.

This video was so interesting to watch. Simply because we have very similar textures and we think completely opposite. I have 4a kinky curly low porosity hair and I LOVE wash and go’s. I primarily do wash and gos honestly and the longest I grew my hair was right above my butt. I always applied my leave ins in the shower on soaking wet hair while it was in 4 sections then styled. I did have the single knot issue sometimes but I realized that was because I wasn’t trimming my hair. So now I get trims every 3-4 months and I now never deal with single stand knots. I don’t do stretches styles often but I told myself I will experiment more with different styles.

F) My hair is too fluffy I would love to see more youtubers demonstrate that a wash n go doesn't work for them either. When you start on your journey, you automatically assume that you too will rock one! Then when it doesn't work out, you assume its the products, so you end up testing and trialing just generally wasting your time, energy and money.
