Carnivores, Omnivores, and Herbivores: Their Differences and Roles in the Food Chain-
Animals of all sorts live together in various ecosystems. Within these natural communities, the animals eat specific diets that connect them together in a food chain.
The three diets of animals include creatures that eat only plants, those that eat only meat, and animals that eat both plants and meat.
Herbivorous Animals
Animals that eat plants exclusively are herbivores.
Examples of herbivorous animals
cow
horse
sheep
goat
elephant
deer
giraffe
Carnivorous Animals
Animals that eat only meat are carnivores.
Examples of Carnivores Animals
Lion.
Wolf.
Leopard.
Hyena.
Polar Bear.
Cheetah.
Giant Panda.
Omnivorous Animals
When animals eat both plants and meat, they are called omnivores.
Animals That Are Omnivores
pigs
humans
cat
dog
jackal
lemur
fox
Scavengers
The animals who eat dead and decaying plant or animal material are called scavengers. The remains of hunted animals are one type of opportunity for a scavenger animal to eat. Imagine a pride of lions chase down a zebra. The lions then eat their fill and move on. Some jackals come in and finish off whatever the lions left behind. Those would be scavenger animals.
Examples
Vulture
cockroach
flesh-fly
hyena
crow
The balance of an ecosystem depends on the presence of every type of animal. If one type of animal becomes too numerous or scarce, the entire balance of the ecosystem will change.
