A little bit of clarification based on some questions I’ve received..... an officer can get demoted but that will also follow with them being kicked out of the Army. I just mean you will not have an officer get demoted and still be in talking about how they use to be a higher rank. Also if an officer gets kicked out it is not always a dismissal notice. They can get kicked out and still receive an honorable discharge. Sorry that area was not more specific. Was really just trying to quickly touch on that part but instead it also left some people misunderstanding how it works for officers.

I received an ELS from the Army about three years ago, my drill sgt at the time told me quote : "You're a smart kid private, maybe this branch just isn't for you, I think you should join the Coast Guard." Three years later I passed the second hardest boot camp in the United States Military, and Im much happier than I was back then.. Just goes to show that a ELS is not the end of the world and doesnt mean you are a bad person.

Artful Mortician I got an ELS in the Air Force. I was a Spec Ops candidate and got hurt in the indoc course. I’m now joining the army and ship as a 11x with option 4& 40 in January . I was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1976. Many of the men I served with were given General Discharges. This timeframe was shortly after the end of Vietnam. The civilian world hated us. There were very few places you could go in public without people ridiculing you. We were easy to spot because every civilian it seemed had long hair. Not a good time to be in the military. It seemed to me at the time even the military wanted to punish us for Vietnam. A guy would finish his contract (the last draftees were discharged on Thanksgiving 1974) and he'd be informed he was going to get a General Discharge instead of a Honorable Discharge. I kept in touch with a few friends from the service who received General Discharges. Most appealed their General Discharges and received Honorable Discharges. I'm sure glad things have changed for service members.

I applaud every citizen who decided to make the ultimate sacrifice by volunteering to serve. Once you sign your name on that dotted line (which occurs multiple times before you even ship out to BCT) you’re considered by DOD a veteran, whether you served 2 months or 20 years. Your discharge type is based upon your choices & actions.

Officers can also receive a GOMOR, or General Officer's Memorandum of Reprimand, which for officers is usually a career halting reprimand, typically preventing an officer from promoting into a higher position. Enlisted can also receive these, and in my experience, they're much less career ending for Enlisted soldiers. Though I can only speak from personal experience, not the Army at large.

I spent 6 good years in the ARMY. I watched as people got dishonorable discharges left and right for being foolish. When I was given my Honorable Discharge, I was surrounded by people who were high on bath salts and spice. All I had to do was try not to be a bad soldier.... I DEFINITELY wasn't perfect.. but I made it out just fine. I had some hard times but when I look back at it.. all I can see were great deployments, fun FTX stories, and a selection of people who brought back my faith in humanity. Some people are just impulsive and find themselves doing something they shouldn't of done... Like getting drunk and breaking into the unit's Motorpool, stealing a HUMMV and then crashing it into the gates and leaving it there (This actually happened). My suggestion for those who are just joining: Do what you like to do but in moderation.. you don't want to make a mistake that makes your only job opportunity working at McDonald's for minimum wage. Put your dog tags in your shirt, check yourself and think about your actions before you go out there.

Fun story about how easy it is to get a honorable discharge. I was in the marines in a 5 year contract. I had insomnia issues that got me a njp for being late, I was diagnosed with insomnia issues afterwords so that was not considered but if i was diagnosed i probably wouldn't have gotten in trouble or could've fought it. Then i was sent on temporary duty and on the last day i ot drunk after work and was drunk waking up and couldnt drive back. I was held there for another day, thank god for that unit for actually looking out for their marines even though i wasn't part of their unit. I got another njp for being drunk on duty when i got back to my old squadron. That all happened the last year of my contract. I still got out with a honorable discharge. Im not saying this to downplay a honorable discharge but to not put pressure on current or inspiring soldiers airmen sailors coast guard members, cant for the life of me remember what they are called but they still deserve their respect, not to be disuaded by how strict it is. Yes it is strict, but formal punishment is not as common as it seems and as long as you are a descent human being you'll be fine. Also if something seems off or seems to be causing issues, seek medical or therapeutic issue as soon as possible. It is free and may save you some time headache and money in the future. All commands should let you go to medical and therapy if you request, no questions asked. If they dont go tobthe higher person in your command. If that person diesn't resolve it continue to the next step in your chain of command until it gets resolved.

@KiLLED5639
@KiLLED5639 2 жыл бұрын
@@iamyor1504 Thanks for asking me the question. Usually, admin separations won't be honorable discharges because you often times leaving the service before you finish your contract. I'm not an expert in military discharges, but I think in this case you'll probably want a lawyer to help you figure out if you can upgrade your discharge after you're out of the service, or if you're still in the service, talk to a lawyer so you can get the best discharge possible. A General Discharge under Honorable Conditions would be the best case scenario because you'll still be able to receive VA benefits. I don't know your full situation and like I said, I'm not an expert but if you're serious about changing your military discharge, you'll need a lawyer. One that mainly deals with this kind of stuff. Also, I think if you have your PD treatment documented while you were in the service, you may be eligible to get a VA therapist for further treatment. Even if you don't go the lawyer route (because they cost a lot), check with your local VA to see if they can get you a therapist if you're looking for one. Good luck friend.

I think some former military people put too much weight into how employers in the civilian are going to value their service. Outside of industries where military experience is valued like government jobs, government/military contractors, security etc. civilian employers are a lot more interested in your capability to do the job. Most honestly don't care about your military experience one way or the other unless your experience somehow gave you experience in the field you're targeting (electrical engineering, weather observation, IT security etc.). I think channels like this tend to put far too much weight on how the conditions of discharge will effect your future employment if you're not targeting jobs that explicity want ex-military.

I was a Hospital Corpsman in the Navy. When I got out, I had to recertify everything. The military medical experience only went so far. In the civilian world, people working in health care need licenses, certification, and education to get hired. Our has to be documented. It also depends on where you work and what you will be doing. If you want to do any patient care, current education and certification is more important than experience. Experience does help, but what's on paper is what they want.

@@barbaramatthews4735 Yeah I think for the medical industry in particular CYA is valued. If they have people with certs they can't get sued as easily. I met a guy in Ft Bragg that he went AWOL while in the cherry phase in our unit(the first months in the unit basically,until we got certified real paratroopers)after he got thru Basic,AIT and basic airborne school....wtf!!..How do you go thru "hell" to just walk away from everything like that,knowing that you will not get an honorable discharge??....Me?..I got 2 honorable discharges,one from 5 years of Active duty in Ft Brag(2 of those in Iraq,OIF1andOIF3),then I had 2 years of civilian life and then I contacted a reserve person and I said that want it to go Afghanistan and off I went,with a reserve unit from AZ to Camp Leatherneck and at the end,I got another honorable discharge from reserve,end of the story.

They used to have some kind of "code" put onto the discharge certificates, which were (in 1970) secret even to the soldier being discharged: everything from bad hygiene to "bed-wetting" (the most common one).

I have a question : My father served 21 years in the Army and wound up SFC.He spent some time as a Corps of engineer, Was an expert un photography processing, was an exceptional marksman... At that time he was offered a permanent position in the reserve. He didn't have to do anything, he was still given his monthly pension, didn't have to attend any training or whatnot - but he was NEVER discharged - he was even allowed to take any form of job or create his own business (he became a professional fisherman).. He got his full pension as a reserve SFC until the day he died..... The day he died - he was given a proper military funeral (I have one of the brass hulls used as a keepsake)

There was a Undesirable Discharge at one time for only enlisted men. Officers received a Less than Honorable Discharge for the same offense. In the mid 80's this was changed to the latter discharge for all.

I remember a guy from my National Guard unit during Operation Noble Eagle. He was an E-5 with prior active duty time. Our unit was augmented to guard Air Force bases all over the US and some overseas. Anyway this guy had serious problems with abusing troops using his rank, sexually harassing female Air Force personnel, coming in late, and money issues etc. So at the end of the mission of Noble Eagle. He was given an Honorable Discharge with an RE-4 code which is a bar of reenlistment to any branch. This was done back in 2004. I remember that on DD214s back then either on the top right and bottom left they had RE codes or Re-Entry codes that specify if a soldier can reenlist back into the Army or any service. Honestly this guy was a shit bag. I knew an E-7 from my Army Reserve infantry unit who had been an active duty artillery officer as a major. He got passed up for promotion to LTC. He then enlisted into the Army Reserve and entered in as an E-6 then became an E-7 when that slot opened up. This guy was also airborne qualified and Ranger tab qualified also. He was one of the most outstanding leaders I have ever met in my life time. This was back in the mid 1990s.

RIF, Reduction In Force, it means shrinking the numbers of personnel in the military and yes officers can be demoted down to E-5 as opposed to throwing them out entirely. Generally, this would be say a LTC that gets passed over for promotion to COL but they have 18 years service, they will be allowed to serve their last 2 years as a sergeant.
@christopherchaos
@christopherchaos 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry but not true. An officer can not be forced to be enlisted as they are commissioned. That’s just not how the system works. Also even if a solder was moved to a sergeant/ E-5 with 18 years in the Army they would be passed the requirement under RCP regulation that dose not allow a solder to currently be in the Army with more than 15 years of service at that rank. Current regulation requires a sergeant must get promoted or leave the Army before they get to 15 years of service.

E5 Air Force vet (Vietnam-era). I have worked for various veterans resource groups. Just an FYI to vets that there are codes at the bottom of your original, full length DD214 that characterize your service and real reason for discharge. Yours may be just end of enlistment or early out for school... or may say you have a personality disorder or are deviant. If you are unaware of it you could have unexplained difficulties looking for a job or trying to get benefits.

Officers CAN be demoted it is however exceedingly rare and they usually have to do something pretty bad but not bad enough to just be straight up kicked out, there was recently an incident where it came out that a retired Air Force 4-Star was having inappropriate relations with I believe his secretary and lost rank post retirement I think they busted him down to a Major General. I was talking to a Lt. Col about this and his explanation about why officers rarely get demoted is because if it's not bad enough to kick them out of the military with how hard it is for them to make rank they will most likely never be promoted again, so they usually get a lighter punishment that just will usually prevent them from ever moving up.
@chrismc410
@chrismc410 5 жыл бұрын
It usually doesn't get that far for officers punishment-wise. Usually in such situations the powers-that-be give those officers a choice: Option A: face formal charges via court-martial and whatever punishment they decide which can mean being kicked out. Option B: formal letter of reprimand, no further promotions and eventually leave due to the "up or out" system. Option C: resign their commission with no further action taken. Option D: if said officer has enough time in service ie: 20 years or more and enough leave to go on terminal leave, they can put in papers for retirement, still get the letter of reprimand and then retire. Usually the officers in question either resign their commissions or retire to avoid any further action taken.

It's interesting that commissioned officers of the US Army have discharges recorded a bit differently than enlisted ones. Yet I still see there being 2 basic types of discharges under the Code of Service Discipline of my homeland (Canada) that are punitive: dismissal and dismissal with disgrace. That said, military members convicted in civilian courts can be administratively released if convicted of severe enough criminal offences. Russell Williams, at 1 time a colonel in the Canadian Armed Forces ("CAF"), was given the equivalent of a dishonourable discharge following his guilty plea to multiple charges, among them 2 murders (1 of them of a CAF corporal).

One thing you forgot to mention is that a soldier can only receive a bad conduct discharge or a dishonorable discharge (or dismissal as the case with Nidal Hasan) as a punishment from a court-martial. In answer to your question, I never received a certificate from my honorable discharge, I’m not really worried about it, my DD214 reflects it, and that’s what really matters, but I do have my commission hanging on the wall.

When I served, 66 to 69, nearly all officers held reserve commissions with a permanent enlisted grade. In a reduction in force they would be offered a choice to resign or to continue to serve in their enlisted grade. That was fairly common after WW2. At a retirement parade a soldier I knew as a sergeant first class came out in the uniform of a lieutenant colonel. LTC was the rank he held during the war. Actually I don’t think I ever met an officer with a Regular Army commission.

I'm not sure whether they regain their original rank upon release, are automatically discharged or are permitted to rejoin the military as a 2nd Lieutenant instead of their original rank.

I received a General Discharge Under Honorable Conditions for patterns of misconduct after serving almost 3 years at 101st Ft. Campbell. I was a hold over in AIT for almost a year waiting for my security clearance to clear and I lost all of my motivation to become a good solider after all my battle buddies left and went to their duty stations. My 1st Sergeant was a complete dick and I was tired of playing the game with them so I gradually stopped caring and I got into trouble. My platoon Sergeant threatened to friendly fire on me if we ever went to combat and I never said a word about it, but I always knew in the back of my mind if we ever went to combat, I'd have to take him out first. I'm 100% sure that if I didn't get held over so long, I would have retired. I did ok despite not making it in the Army and I actually work on a military base right now in a weapons warehouse as a gunsmith, it's pretty decent.

31R multichannel transmissions systems operator. Signal corps or commo. I can't remember if it was top secret or secret? I have no idea why I was held over so long, probably some things that I had on my juvenile record, they may have been possibly reviewing? They should have done all of that before they allowed me to enlist in my opinion. I just caught a bad break at the time and I actually excelled during basic training and during AIT, I was very squared away and highly motivated. One of the Drill Sgts favorites during the cycle, my drill sgt even pulled me off the bus before we left for AIT just to let me know how proud he was of me and that I was going to go far in the Army. That really made me feel good to know that he viewed me as a standout from Alpha Company. That hold over shit, just really put me in a state of depression and I didn't even know it at the time. 😒

And I've seen soldiers who are getting out on 10-14s for DUIs or doing other dumb things getting out under honorable conditions. In the end it's based on what the commander recommends to the CG who ultimately decides.
