Great talk. For everyone that had chemistry in school and not "cement science": when C3A is mentioned it's not a chemical notation, it's a lazy way of writing: Ca3Al2O6. There's no chemical element called "A"

Could you speak to interfaces between types of concrete; specifically with respect too the use of 3d printing cement using blaine cement on outside of form and OPC on the inside to reduce crack propagation and using Type 5 cement as a liner in sulphide ore roaster flumes. (Just two examples)

Don't you also need to add sand to the masonry cement as well as water at the job site? Or am I misunderstanding you? Can cement ever be used alone out of the bag without adding addition materials? The stores sell masonry mortar mix and this blend requires only water.

CAC can be modified by infusion with ultra low viscosity resins and soluble calcium after it cracks, which, while never really regain their original strength, it brings them back somewhat. ~( 'w')/ CSA [quick set cement] is hella hard to work with so you pretty much have to mix it as you apply it [like shotcrete style machinery] but the mixing equipment is subject to freezing up if its not fully moved and purged, especially once a pour is finished. If you use CAS and mix in a sealing epoxy, you can have a very impermeable sealant, which can be good for shoring up loose soil, shale, and mine shafts. I suggest one also add fine fibers such as aramid fibers [low deformation, high tensile strength, high fracture resistance, high corrosion resistance, no corrosion contribution, chemically nonreactive, nontoxic, and non-flammable] like Kevlar, but not necessarily Kevlar its self, since many others with potentially more desirable properties. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aramid

In the oilfield I have mainly used Class G, along with Type III and Type V. Also, 50/50 Poz Class G were quite commonly used too.
@TylerLey
@TylerLey 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Newfie. Class G is very similar to Type II cement. Did you use fly ash as your pozzolan or was it a natural pozzolan?
@newfie-dean5803
@newfie-dean5803 5 жыл бұрын
Tyler Ley we used fly ash. As a byproduct of coal burning it was quite cost effective.
@newfie-dean5803
@newfie-dean5803 5 жыл бұрын
It’s interesting how in the oilfield so many commonly known things are added to cement to achieve desired properties. Salt is used in lower concentrations to accelerate the set of cement but table salt at high concentrations (on the order of 18% by weight of water) will be added to the cement to give the slurry desirable pumping properties as well as to control shrinkage and for cementing across salt formation zones. Regular household sugar is a strong retarder of cement so in the oilfield if you were washing cement equipment up to a tank you could add lots of sugar to prevent it from setting. This could apply to yard work. Maybe you have a wheel barrel of mixed concrete with some left over. You could just add sugar to it to prevent it from setting up inside your wheel barrel. These are just a couple of examples. Cement is a very cool material and there’s a lot more involved with it than most people realize.

Why is it that a lot of concrete that was from say 70-90-100 years ago is still in great shape yet sidewalks and foundations from 5 -10- 15 years old are cracked and in horrible shape. It is amazing the difference. Is it the fly ash and slag?

Parody - not to be taken seriously. FOOTPRINTS IN THE CEMENT UNDERLAYMENT One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was installing an underlayment with the LORD. Across the floor flashed bags of ARDEX from Hanks Specialties For each scene he noticed two sets of footprints in the underlayment: One belonging to him, and the other to Hank. When the last part of his underlayment was installed he looked back at the footprints in the underlayment. He noticed that many times along the edge of his floor, there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and roughest part in his floor. This really bothered him and he questioned Hank about it: "HANK, you said that once I decided to follow you, you'd walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome areas in my floor, there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why when I needed you most you would leave me." The HANK replied: "My son, my precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you." Author unknown. (Probably a jack ass).

Good morning good sir, I wanted to pick your brain about a product that I have come across. The company claims their concrete does not use portland cement at all, and they provided their SDS on their website. The 3 materials apart of the mix were crystalline Silica, Ashes (residues), and Titanium(IV) oxide. Their part B is Potassium silicate. They say do not even use water with their product. This product claims to chemically bond to concrete rather than "glue" to it like the various bonding agent additions. Curious if you could shed some knowledge on the chemical process they are using! Their company is called Terrafuse! They are quite expensive, so mostly trying to figure if they are worth the money! The SDS for each are on their website, was curious if you could discuss this type of "concrete". Thanks!
