You are correct in mentioning that rainbow moonstone is in fact a variety of labradorite by definition. A little known fun fact - Oregon sunstone is also a variety of labradorite by definition. The spectral colours displayed in many labradorites is actually due to a separation in lamellae that is seen to occur most prominently towards the anorthite end of the plagioclase feldspar series between anorthite and albite, most notably occurrent in the feldspars technically defined as labradorite and bytownite, thus, in some cases not all stones sold as labradorite are actually labradorite but may include bytownites showing the spectral iridescence. It may seem like splitting hairs to some, alas, definitions are important, lest we start calling all feldspars with optical phenomena moonstones which would be utterly confusing.

Just saw your video and loved it as Moonstones are one of my favourites . I'm a Cancer and do readings and the moonstones really helps. I have this Black Moonstone and it's something special ( just got it) and the energy of it is fierce. You have to try and meditate with it and would love to hear what were your sensations and opinion. Thanks so much for sharing .

Hi Susan!! Thank you for checking out the vid, means a lot to me 😊 I haven’t worked much with black moonstone however I’ve always loved the vibe it gives off. It’s like a gentle grounding and protective aura all around!💗

is grey moonstone same as labradorite?
@GeekingoutwithMellyMel Жыл бұрын
Hi there! From my previous research, rainbow moonstone is part of the feldspar family just like labradorite. Some people refer to rainbow moonstone as a type of white labradorite but, labradorite itself is a separate mineral from moonstone :)

No rainbow moonstone is moonstone with rainbow Aurora. The difference would be calcium and potassium. The Aurora doesn't make the stone. Although the two stones are very close cousins.

Hi there!! Thank you for sharing that! Everything I've researched indicates it's a type of labradorite so it's def interesting to get a different take on that :)
@bonariablackie40472 ай бұрын
Labradorite is NOT a Moonstone. Labradorite invariably has a blue schiller. It's chemical composition is ((Ca, Na)(Al, Si)4O8) and it is a Plagioclase member. It has an Anorthite percentage of between 50 and 70. Moonstone's chemical composition is sodium potassium aluminum silicate, or (Na,K)AlSi3O8. It has a clear schiller that billows over the stone as it is moved. Both are feldspars. But given that 60% of the Earth's Crust is made up of feldspars, that should surprise nobody. It would be helpful if people could differentiate between two entirely different stones, with entirely different effects. And it would be great if people stopped calling Labradorite, Rainbow Moonstone, which has never existed. Calling the stones by their ACTUAL names would be professional, Etsy sellers, I'm looking at you.

Hi there! I def appreciate the information as I’m always learning because knowledge is power. It’s been a while since I put this video together but, if I remember correctly… based on my research, I believe i said that rainbow moonstone is referred to as a type of labradorite due to both of them being feldspars. Your explanation is super interesting though! Thank you! :)
@bonariablackie40472 ай бұрын
@@GeekingoutwithMellyMel Yes. As is 60% of the Earth's crust. Granite is also a feldspar. So you could call Labradorite a Granite instead of a Moonstone. There is no such thing as Rainbow Moonstone. There is a stone called Labradorite. Chemical composition (Ca Na) (Al,Si) 408 which means it is a Sodium Calcium Aluminum Silicate and is of the Plagioclase group. It displays Labradorescence. Moonstone Chemical composition Orthoclase and Albite. It has between 30 and 70% Albite. It is of the Orthoclase group. It displays adularescence. Named after the Adular mountains in Switzerland. Labradorite is mined in Poland, Finland, Norway, Slovakia, China, Australia and Madagascar. Moonstone is mined in Sri Lanka, India, Myanmar, Madagascar and the United States. So, different effects, different stones, different countries and different chemical compositions. What were you saying about Labradorite and Moonstone being the same stone because they are both feldspars again?

Hi there!! You can probably find some on Amazon but, Etsy would probably be your best bet. On Etsy, you can find shops like NewMoonBeginnings and Moon Mountain Gems, and both of these have a really nice selection. Both of those shops also have their own websites apart from Etsy.
