Types of Trichomes Explained
Professor DeBacco
Trichomes
Trichomes- a small hair or other outgrowth from the epidermis of a plant, typically unicellular and glandular.
These structures are the site of cannabinoid, terpene and flavonoid production.
These are found on more than just cannabis plants as trepens function as a natural plant defense mechanism.
Glandular Trichomes
Glandular trichomes produce and store large amounts of cannabis resin which are found in high quantities on female flowers, but are also found on leaves and on stems of younger plants.
Glandular trichomes can occur as small bulbous trichomes with one-cell stalks, sessile glands which are attached directly by the base without a stalk, or multicellular stalked glandular trichomes with long multicellular stalks on the bracteoles surrounding the pistillate flowers.
However three a common glandular trichomes to cannabis…
Bulbous trichomes
Capitate sessile trichomes
Capitate-stalked trichomes
Bulbous Trichomes
Bulbous trichomes are found throughout the plant but do not produce or contain cannabinoid or terpenes
Very small at 15-30 microns in size.
Capitate Sessile Trichomes
Capitate-sessile trichomes that have a globular shaped head and are the most common as they are found on the stems, leaves and bracts.
While these trichomes do produce cannabinoids, the levels produced are much lower than the capitate-stalked trichomes discussed next;-)
These are mid-sized measuring from 25-100 microns across
Capitate-Stalked Trichomes
Capitate-stalked trichomes are the primary source of the cannabinoids, terpenes, and other plants oils found in the cannabis plant that develop only after flower formation.
If you look at the bracts of the flower and small tiny mushrooms that measure from 150-500 microns tall.
Non-Glandular Trichomes
Non-glandular trichomes are hair-like extensions resembling leaf hairs, with a slender pointed apex.
They protect the plant from its environment, mainly through physical means (e.g., restricting access to animals and insects, preventing water losses or light degradation, and fungal infection).
It is characteristic of cannabis to find non-glandular trichomes on both the top and bottom of leaves.
Two Main Non-Glandular Trichomes
Cystolithic trichomes
Non-cystolithic trichomes
Cystolithic Trichomes
Cystolithic trichomes have a characteristic bear claw shape and may have calcium cystoliths resembling knobs visible at their bases. They are found on the upper surface of the leaves and range from 150 to 220 microns in height. Frequently, the trichome is broken and the knob freed.
Non-Cystolithic Trichomes
Non-cystolithic trichomes are found most often on the lower side of the leaves, bracts, and bracteoles and tend to be fine and slender in shape.

Love this, thank you. Do you know how these different trichomes effect the extraction rates of rosin? Even when lab tested for potency a lot of users find that some strains do not press as well as others. I'm just curious how the different trichomes come into play here. Thanks for this content 🙏
@user-yr9qn6bk6o
@user-yr9qn6bk6o 2 жыл бұрын
The trichome structure itself doesn't have the material we're looking to extract. We're looking to extract the material only from the inside of glandular trichome heads. There are many variables that contribute to how well a plant works for extraction including head size and thickness. Potency is not one of them however.

Can you explain the Cannabis from the '80s that we grew had calyxes full of resin. Back then we thought this is where the THC come from. You did not see the trichomes on the plants back in the '80s but we still had some really strong weed that would put you in your seat after two tokes. Today's weed is completely different. We haven't seen anything like that in these newer strains including the potency. It would be really awesome if you could make us a new video strictly on this. We had buds that were dripping with resin literally on certain strains and I'm sure it had a lot to do with how we grew it.

Immediately went into flower. It's been 3-1/2 months now and grown another foot in the process. Buds are nice and thick but there is no smell. Maybe a hint of cut grass if anything. Should have another month before harvest. Any ideas why no smell? Thanks

No smell likely means no terpenes have had a chance to be produced by the plant. These typically increase in the later stages of plant growth.

Noticed my young plants and seedlings growing non glandular trichomes on the fan leaves, and first leaves, I do have the light really close in their seedling stage, about 10inches, but am only using cheap Chinese blurple leds, and only have it running at half power currently, do you think the lights being close would be the reason? I'm growing the seedlings in cheap potting mix, and the younger veg stage plants in peatmoss believe it or not, and my plants seem to like it, I just treat it like I would coco and have had decent results, also have noticed my autoflowers will never give me trichomes until week 2 or so of flower, while the photos so far have been all giving me a lovely peek into their terp profiles. I assume the lights were too intense so it popped some trichomes as a defense mechanism, but I have no degree lol tell me what you think. Thanks.

I have a few questions. if the capitate- stalk trichomes ( the high light or the one most grows seek for) are 150-500 microns but why with ice water hash the 45- 73-90 micron is considered smokable hash and the 120 -160-190 microns are food grade? and how come you never sift for and higher than 220um? If the best trichomes are 150-500um?
@Camcam5672
@Camcam5672 Жыл бұрын
Would love to see a video on the trichomes in different microns of ice water hash and cannabinoid that develop In ice water hash compared to it live or dried material. some say that it completely changes some of the cannabinoids in the process making it different or new cannabinoid that are not found on it live or dry starting material.

The larger sizes are taking into account the stalk and not just the top bulb region which is probably the reason for the confusion.

Ok, dude you're not really giving any additional information that isn't on the slide. at 3:23 you said that they measure from 15-100 but on the slide it says 25-100. So which one is right?
@DeBaccoUniversity

In formation provided is off the slide for the hearing impaired so it shows up on the subtitles for easy understanding. The range of 25-100 would be more accurate.
