Cones feed well from the outside. Cakes (often called center-pull cakes) feed well from the center. Take the cake off the winding core and you'll be able to pull the center straight up without any problems.

afaik it is best to wind the yarn onto a swift before putting it onto a winder. You don't have to, but I believe it is easier to wind it off a swift. I don't have a swift so I don't know it that is true.

It would actually be quite hard to "wind" it onto a swift. The swift doesn't have a winding handle. At least not this one that I have. It's only for skeins to be placed onto it and the only way it actually spins around is because the yarn is being pulled by the action of winding it with the yarn winder. If you stop turning the winder handle for some reason before the yarn runs out, the swift keeps spinning because of the momentum and you must stop it with your other hand otherwise you have a mess. 🙂
