An 87 year old typewriter repair main told me that the color selector had a safety put on it to help prevent the office secretary (who quite often typed 80-100 wpm) from accidentally sliding it to “stencil” as she was screaming through a dictated letter. This way they could reach up without looking and simply remember left or right without worrying if they had slid it over too far to the right. Made sense to me. Royal seemed to always put time into their design to do things like this. Great machine and awesome video!!! Thanks for sharing it with us!

That makes sense. There probably were not very many models with the avalanche feature.

The wide-open front and total visibility of writing (once you put the card fingers down, there’s literally nothing in between you and the printing), plus the elegant styling, are why I love the Royal 10 above all other vintage standards for actual use. Just a wonderful machine that is as practical as it is gorgeous.

Great video. I have the same typewriter and it’s flawless. I’ve decided I’m going to clean it so was looking for cleaning tips. Your video is a great explore of the machine and I appreciate you going thru and showing it’s benefits and features. The special effects you’ve added are a great. Thank you again for posting this. Much appreciated. Take care.

My grandmother actually gave me one of these typewriters recently (because either I was getting it or it was going to the dump, haha). Neat to learn a little more about it, though mine’s certainly nowhere close to being as in shape as this one. I’m more impressed by the fact that anything on mine still works after living on the floor of a shed for 60+ years.

I just bought a nice Royal 10. Like this one, no decals on the back, and I’ve seen others like that, too. (At first, I assumed they may have been painted over at some point, but upon closer examination, no, I don’t think so!) Any guess on why Royal didn’t place rear decals on some machines? Seems odd!
@Saboda535 ай бұрын
I now suspect many Royal 10’s were refurbished mid-century. Repainted with fresh, gloss black paint, new decals in front, but none on the back. I think originally they all had rear decals.

Great video! Thanks! Where do you purchase replacement ribbons from?
@TypewriterMinutes4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I buy bulk reels from Fine Line Ribbon in Ennis, Texas, and wind the ribbon onto the original spools when possible. Google and you’ll find them. Not sure but they may sell individual spools with ribbon if that’s what you’re looking for.

@@TypewriterMinutes I just purchased a 1926 (bi-color) Royal 10 and I need to replace the ribbon because the one it came with was dry. I found several online stores that carry ribbons for "Royal 10" and it looks like it could fit but the only video I found on KZbin was of a guy cutting the ribbon to make it fit and then winding it, so I'm a bit confused on which one to purchase and how to attach it.
@TypewriterMinutes4 жыл бұрын
My Royal 10 is at the office so I can check when I get to work, but I believe it uses special spools that are required for the automatic-ribbon reverse system to work. Does your machine have the original metal spools? If so, you need 1/2 inch ribbon (the most popular, standard size), which you should then wind off of the new plastic spools you purchase (which probably won’t work on the Royal 10) and onto the old metal spools. Standard plastic 2 inch spools are commonly available online. Those standard spools won’t work in the Royal 10 but that’s the ribbon to use to wind onto the old spools. If you don’t have the original metal spools, you’ll have to be careful to track down and find precise replacement spools for the Royal 10. I have never looked for them but they are probably available. They would have a special tab on the bottom (like the originals do) that is used for the ribbon-reverse system.
@anthonyescribens4 жыл бұрын
@@TypewriterMinutes Ah Okay! It's starting to make sense now! :) Yes, I do have the original metal spools so I'll just have to figure out how to wind off the ribbon from the plastic spools into the original (metal) spools. Thanks again for your replies!
@TypewriterMinutes4 жыл бұрын
Hopefully the old ribbon is threaded through correctly right now. If so, take pictures of how the ribbon feeds around the posts near the spools and through the ribbon vibrator. It will help when you’re installing the new ribbon.
