I learned something new - that the Margin Release could act as a typebar pull on some machines - tried it on my Brother Citation and it worked just fine! SUPER neat! Of course an excellent video, as always!

Thank you for your comment. The de-jammer key is a nifty trick.

I'm still loving my typewriter! I do miss the dedicated "1" key, though! 😊 My fingers are getting stronger, too, and the guys at work still get a kick out of me pulling out my manual and filling out forms and envelopes!😂 I really need one with the room to put in a wider envelope, but I am making do.

Thank you for watching! Your ivory Brother is one of the most pristine Brothers I’ve seen. I’ll be working on some larger portables over the next few months.

Jumps; the fox jumps over the dog, present tense. If it's "jumped," the sentence doesn't include an s. Very nice machine; I'm bidding on a very similar Brother right now.

Hello! I have recently and unexpectedly acquired this typewriter and am a complete newbie. Your video is really helpful, but I have a couple of further newbie questions - how do you shift to a new line/paragraph without using the white dial to move the paper? And what are the three blank keys for, typically where shift and tab are, I think - on my typewriter these keys appear to have the same function (though not sure what this function is), and pressing any of them seems to lift the paper and ribbon section up off the typewriter?

Hi there. The large silver return lever on the left does two things. When you reach the end of a typed line, it pushes the carriage to the right. It also advances the paper 1-3 spaces depending on where the line spacing lever is set. As for blank keys, you may be referring to the shift keys, which allow you to type capital letters or the top row of figures above the numbers. There is one on either side of the space bar. The small blank one is caps lock, which allows you to type all capital letters. Here is a user manual that may help. site.xavier.edu/polt/typewriters/BrotherEchelon66.pdf

Very nicely refurbushed ^^ i got one at a yard sale for 5 quids a while ago. It would need a good refurbishement and new keys (it's a qwertz one).

I wondered if the Brother De Luxe is carriage or basket shifted? I understand that there are a few variants of the De Luxe, was comparing this and an Olivetti Dora that I cannot test in person, and wondered which one would have a lighter touch.
@TypewriterMinutes3 жыл бұрын
This Brother De Luxe is a carriage shift but not very heavy. Until recently I had an Olivetti Lettera 31, which I believe is like a Dora, and it had a basket shift. Probably a slightly lighter touch than the Brother, but I’m a big Brother fan based on their overall reliability and ease for cleaning and maintenance.

I have a question about this typewriter: What size ribbon does this use? 1 15/16 inch or 2 inch. Ik most portables use 1 15/16 and 2 inch is the universal.
@TypewriterMinutes5 жыл бұрын
It uses a standard 1/2 inch ribbon.
@MR-qq6ec3 жыл бұрын
Hi. You text is so very clear! Do you use a silk ribbon? Or is the typewriter itself just a really good one? Best regards a newbie in the typewriter universe
@TypewriterMinutes3 жыл бұрын
I use nylon ribbon from Fine Line Ribbon company. The platen is soft so that helps with good output.

what website did you buy? do you have a link?

I buy large reels of ribbon and wind them onto the original spools. I’m not sure if they sell just the spools with ribbon already installed but check with them. www.finelineribbon.com

@@TypewriterMinutes And were do you by the typewriters? I know you said goodwill but i can't seem to find it either. Thanks
@TypewriterMinutes5 жыл бұрын
I buy typewriters from a few different sources. Some I find locally through ads such as Craigslist. Some I buy from eBay. I have purchased several machines on shopgoodwill.com, which is an auction. Somewhat risky because you don’t really know if the machines work or have damage until you get them and try them out. The typewriters sold on their web auction are shipped from various Goodwill locations across the country, so there is also a risk of damage during shipment.
