Typical Day at a Boarding School - Ridley College

Two students take you around a typical day at a boarding school in Canada. Ridley College is an independent University preparatory school located in St. Catharines, Ontario. Ridley offers JK-Grade 12 with a post-graduate option. Boarding can begin in Grade 5.

Absolutely! There are weekend trips, in the winter you can go skiing most Sundays. You can go to the local mall or restaurants or the movie theatre (there is a movie bus that goes from the school). There are also a lot of events going on at the school that you can participate in or attend (sports, theatre performances etc).

Hi Rachael- Depending on how far away your family is you have a lot of opportunity to visit your family. There are long weekends every couple of weeks, so if you are a couple hours away you can visit your family. If you are from far away, you will be able to go home for Christmas Break and March Break (March Break is two weeks) as these are both longer breaks. If you are a boarding student from far away there are school trips and homestays with local families on long weekends.

Hello @SarahOlivier there are typically two boarding students and one day student assigned to each room. Senior students sometimes have single rooms, but would still share with a day student.

@sweet169498 - We have different variations of the uniform. You can either wear a kilt or pants if you are a girl and there are different shirts that students wear in the winter as opposed to the spring for comfort according to the temperature. On Fridays we wear a formal uniform because we have a longer chapel service. Prefects (Gr. 12 student leaders) wear a specific blazer. There are also house ties and academic ties that students can wear. Feel free to ask more questions.

@legendary7471 - On Saturday & Sundays students play sports, participate in community service or activities. There are weekend trips as part of the Duke of Edinburgh program (camping, horseback riding, canoeing, dogsledding) as well as trips to theatres, museums and art galleries. You can go the movies- there is a bus that can take you there from the school or you can go out for dinner. There are events on Saturday evening such as dances, plays or dodgeball tournaments.

The school year at Ridley College is from September until June (school usually starts the second week in September and finishes mid-June). Boarding students stay on campus the whole school year, but go home for breaks at Christmas and March and if they live close by they can usually make it home on the long weekends that are throughout the year.

@MegaGunie yes, there are ten houses on campus. Four girls, five boys and a junior boarding house for students in Gr. 5-8. Each house has colours, songs and traditions - very much like Hogwarts!

@thekalicouture Ridley College no longer requires standardized admissions testing as a part of our application process. Applicants interested in applying for a Merit Based Scholarship are required to write the SSAT (Secondary School Admission Test). The application process at Ridley involves an interview, a recommendation form, grades and transcripts and an application form. Hope that helps, feel free to ask questions at any time.

@TheSusunella - We offer Intro to Psychology in Gr. 11 and offer other AP courses including Economics, European History, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, but not Psychology at this time. We also offer the IB Diploma Programme. There are students from 37 countries at Ridley with 65% of the total population from Canada and 25% from America. Please feel free to ask more questions.

Hello - Ridley College offers classes from JK-Grade 12 with a Post-grad option- Ridley is an independent boarding lower and upper school. There are many Canadian and American Universities that place a similar emphasis on athletics, academics and faith. Depending on what you are looking for I know some Canadian Universities such as the University of Western Ontario has Huron College that is affiliated with the University, but has a smaller feel and offers Theology courses.

You can absolutely decorate your dorm room. You can put up posters and pictures and make it your own. As for eating meals, you do eat all of your meals in the dining hall, but you will find this is a good time to relax and have your meals with your friends! State boarding schools are cheaper and you just have to pay for living cost

In New Zealand there’s state boarding schools that are $10,000 a year and you don’t pay for tuition. If you’re an international student you can get a homestay for the holidays or stay at your friends houses.

Hi. I am interested in attending Ridley College but I do have a few questions. I currently go to a public high school in the US and I will be going into the 9th grade. So, I was wondering if I did transfer to a boarding school next year (10th grade) would I have to repeat any previous grades? I have heard of cases where this has happened with some transfer students because the curriculum wasn't as challenging as the BS they transferred to
