In this video I fix up a Ford 460 head that has broken off exhaust manifold hardware. A few issues come up but overall a pretty typical job.Thanks for watching!

G day Brian, I was expecting the tap to break there, it looked like you were giving it some. Alls well that ends well though.

I enjoy the job shop work as it involves something different every time. Personally i prefer snapping off drills and taps below the surface to get the maximum enjoyment of my exhaust manifold bolt work. 😢 Thanks for sharing, Best Wishes.

You certainly cranked that tap in hard there Brian especially after a breaking the drill.

Clinched up tight watching you crank on that tap

Never ceases to amaze me how those gun taps can eat so much trash without breaking.

That is one hell of a tough tap! I would never dream of applying that much torque to spin it in. Who makes that? Got to get me some.

made me nervous watching that :)

It is a cleveland with the lube coating. They are pretty tough taps I use them a lot.

Needs to be a new tap with good sharp edges so it will cut and not rub...

Every chuck should be tightened with two holes, any two. I have experienced great results drilling the bolt parts out with reverse drill bits operated in reverse. Ron W4BIN

that's one thing i love about the seat and guide machine set of doing brake bolts like that take 2 min for setup, but i doing like to see how a real machinist does it.
@edkeniston478610 ай бұрын
That’s no fun! You’ve got to snap at least one tap off in the bottom of a whole.

I know cast iron is to a large extent self lubricating with its inherent carbon in the metal but I would have thought a little lubricant would help to remove the remaining steel material of the broken bolt. Like others have commented, my "butt clenching pucker factor" was quite high, expecting to snap the tap at any time.

Every time I do that the drill bit walks a little on a uneven end of the broken bolt! I have learned to use an flat bottomed end-mill to flatten the broken bolt face to try to stop the drill bit from walking! Is that what you did also?
@bcbloc0210 ай бұрын
yeah I start with an end mill to get the drill started straight.

That isn’t as easy a job as you make it look. It’s easy for the tap to start pulling the old threads from the bolts and then snap the tap

I'm curious Brian if you get any feeling while drilling with the quill on your machine or if its so large it just absorbing it?

It would be helpful if you specify the: original hole diameter and the threads (diameter and pitch) and the same for the tap.
@bcbloc02Ай бұрын
@@claytaylor4028 pretty sure it was 3/8 -16 thread. I will make note to try to include such information in future videos

After you get the old bolt drilled out the crusty old casting is just waiting to snag and snap your tap just to see the look on your face.
@bcbloc0210 ай бұрын
Or have a piece of thread roll out snag and bust your drill bit! lol
@JohnBare74710 ай бұрын
Yeah, saw that, same diabolical mischief Those roasted castings love to pull on someone. The guy who brought it to you had the fun of snapping them off, you had to undo his handiwork. @@bcbloc02

Did all the bolts break off down in the hole? I didn't notice any of them flush with the top... Maybe I need my glasses checked :)
@bcbloc0210 ай бұрын
No they were at least a half inch down in the hole so welding to them to get them out was not really an option.
@daleolson350610 ай бұрын
Check the valve guides they are usually worn out along with the valves.
@gwharton6810 ай бұрын
You need to invest in some left hand twist drill bits.
@bcbloc0210 ай бұрын
I have left hand twist drills never once has one ever brought a broken off exhaust bolt out. If you have a bolt that got sheared off you have a good chance of success. For a galled up seized fastner left hand buts highly unlikely to do you any good.

You had to be feeling that tail thumping against your leg. Bailey was reminding you to consider the consequences. The only thing worse than a bolt broke off in the hole is…. 🥸👍👀✅💦
