Here is a machine very close to my heart. My grandfather's old Olympia! It could use a tune-up and a rectification of the amateur service I gave it many years ago, such as flushing the excessive oil. But it works well as-is.

Hey DrTypewriter! I just remembered that you made videos about typewriters a while ago because one of your videos from your previous channel was recommended to me. I remember watching some of your typewriter videos a few years ago and I was really enjoying the sounds of the typewriters that you used. It made me appreciate them so much, that I got 2 typewriters. One was bought from one of my relatives, who lives in Mexico, and the other one was lended to my dad because he was cleaning out someone’s garage and found the typewriter. He was told that he could take the typewriter, and that’s how I ended up with the other typewriter. So yeah, I have two typewriters, even though I haven’t used them in a while. I plan to use them to type stuff out with them, just because it’ll feel really nice and classic to me. But yeah, I just wanted to say, thank you for making me appreciate typewriters so much. I’ve subscribed to you just because I didn’t know you were still active on here. I can’t wait to see more videos from you dude! Hopefully your day went well!

Very nice lite touch and snappy machine. Like it. I never knew my grandfather, but my father was more or a sliderule man than a typewriter man.

This is pretty special knowing that it previously belonged to your grandfather. Just based on the sound of this Olympia - how quiet it is with the exception of the type slugs smacking the platen, it would seem to be a very well-tuned machine. Thanks for sharing!

It is! I treasure this machine. The smacking could be lessened if I was to replace the platen.

@@dr.typewriter-venneburgtyp121 In all honesty, when it comes to manual typewriters, I actually like there to be a certain amount of noise involved. For me, it's just another part of the beauty of the overall experience.

Very cool to keep an old machine, especially your grandfather's, in use. I have an old Underwood that belonged to my grandfather. He gifted it to me this past Christmas. Some snags here and there, but with care and attention, i was able to have it run as good as i could get it

Usually with some proper service and tuning you can get them going just fine. Yes, if there was one typewriter I would keep it would be this one. He passed away in 2001 and I miss him to this day.

@@dr.typewriter-venneburgtyp121 very sorry to hear about your loss. It is very nice to have some part of him with you as you go through life. It could be a coin for all anyone cares, but it would still mean just as much to anyone

@@alexnajera3483 Exactly. And having grown up using this very typewriter, there is a strong connection with this machine. And even as a inanimate object, I feel that "life" lives on.

Always lovely to see a machine with a personal connection and family history. Such machines are irreplaceable. Thanks for sharing. I had an Olympia SM-9 for a while, and it really impressed me with the quality of its build - it seemed like this was what people meant when they spoke of “German engineering” in reverent tones. Obviously your Progress here would have a different feel, but I’m curious to know how you’d rate the overall quality - was it just as strong in 1945?

Yes, this Progress is a wonderful reflection of early Olympia design. They clearly established the roots of quality for their later products. This is the oldest Olympia I have ever owned, (the newest being from the late 1970's) and they all depict the same sense of sustainability. Olympia really nailed their signature quality, much like Royal who throughout their run were consistent in their design.
