As a fan of historical dress the way they are using the corsets on these poor girls is infuriating. Historically, Few women did tightlacing and corsets were never worn next to bare skin. They were used for support of the “girls” and holding the weight of the skirts. NOT for making your waist smaller.
@laurabunn299311 ай бұрын
Thanks for this! They definitely weren't doing the corsetry right at all and were going in too tightly. You can absolutely wear a corset correctly without feeling pain or having a hard time breathing. It also needs to be the right size to work as well. I'm pretty sure they had absolutely no clue how to lace anyone up whatsoever.
@avonee197611 ай бұрын
That’s right! I forgot that women wore a chemise next to the skin and the corset went over that. I do remember not being a fan of this episode when it first aired.
@ben-salami111 ай бұрын
Not only that, but also, just like with boots, you have to break in a corset that took a couple of weeks. Corsets were made with the measurements of the wearer. People also forget back then women also did sports, rode bicycles, and walked while wearing a corset. They should never be uncomfortable.

@PhoenyxV11 ай бұрын
Sigh. As someone who wears corsets (not regularly, but occasionally), a *properly fitted corset* won't make it hard to breathe. People wore these things as their regular underclothes for decades (women AND men, though women much more regularly) and they were meant to be about as comfortable and supportive as an underwire bra and shapewear combo. Like sure, not the greatest thing to wear when doing heavy labor, but entirely do-able. "Let me know when you can't breathe and then I'll keep going" is antithetical to how a corset should fit. It should follow the natural chest/waist/hip curve of the body and emphasize that silhouette, not forcefully change it. Yes, I do get way too heated about this stuff lol

Thank you! The ultra slim waist we tend to associate with historical corsets is a hip/waist garment illusion. Those models are all slender, and there's like no hip padding in there so you're not going to get an hourglass even with tight lacing. Also 1940's corsets tended to be much closer to modern undergarments like a "girdle." This is more like Halloween store rockabilly than 1940's specific pinup.

Came here to say that too! Good corset should feel like a hug and not be uncomfortable. It not only provides bust but also back support. I made myself a regency corset and honestly it is much more comfortable than a bra! I also wanna make victorian horse riding corset in the future

If the person wearing them is having issues breathing or is in any pain, the garment needs to be loosened up. This show reminds me so much of what it was like growing up with abusive parents. They got to decide what information from me was real and not real. If I had a valid reason for something, like not veing able to breathe in a corset, they decided if that mattered or if it was invisible, just like Mr. Jay did. It's strange watching Jessica's commentary give so much importance to the models' experience, and treat every one of their problems as real. My habit is to go along with what the judges say and shrug and think, "yeah, I guess the corset problem wasn't a real problem." This kind of treatment from people makes you question reality and not know how to trust or interpret your own feelings or experiences. In the corset world there is a term “amount of squish” and it pretty much means how much you can tighten a corset comfortably. Every body is different, and 1 corset is not size fits all, it should fit different bodies differently. that doesn’t mean tighten till the gap is closed. You could do serious harm doing that to someone. A good and seasoned corset should not hurt! Extreme tightening is not historically accurate and just dangerous.

I didn’t mind the concept if it was done right. The styling and creative direction was nonexistent. I wonder if Mr. Jay is respected in the fashion industry. The girls deserved better point blank and the period.

Jessica, your face when the photographer said that Bri was “overthinking” on the photo shoot 😂😂😂. I’m dying. I love your videos so much because you show so clearly that treating people badly, body-shaming, gender shaming, armchair psychology and all the other problematic behavior on these reality shows isn’t just wrong and harmful to the contestants, it’s also really bad business. And bad for the creative side of the fashion industry. I used to watch this show religiously, and when the judges or the creative team did something shady I remember thinking “ Well that’s just the fashion world. That’s just how it is” but now it’s so clear: That’s definitely not how it has to be, just how it is when abusive people decide to do whatever they want. I think Tyra DID have good intentions with this show and that she truly believed she was helping all these women (and eventually men) because that was what she herself dealt with when she was a new model. But I hope she has learned that she and other gatekeepers have to do better now. Way better.

There was a time when car print ads had zero background because the focus was supposed to be on the car. The only thing they might add would be a scantily clad woman, which I never understood. That being said, a Christmas type setting would be better. No elves, though. Just a black car in the snow with a forest behind it. Much more than that might distract from the car. As far as Nicole saying "okay," my therapist views it more as acknowledging the remark and locking it away for analysis.

Jessica, honestly, you're too nice but you're so right. ANTM was disgusting, from the judges to a lot of the stylists and the photographers. As a photographer myself I wouldn't dream of speaking to a model so inappropriately or e working in an environment which allows people backstage to be this inappropriate. I used to watch ANTM as a kid and wanted to be a model. Looking back it gives me an enormous ick and makes me sad I adored this show so much. Thank you for putting this in perspective!

I think the answer of “okay” makes narcissistic people mad & if it’s not clear by your use of the term gaslighting in this video, I would say many, if not all of the judges are either narcissistic or ok with playing along with narcissism. Models that call them out then they have a fit about it… models that respond to criticism without getting worked up or annoyed by it, but giving a bare minimum response because it would be rude to not respond, simply show that they are lacking narcissistic supply from that model. I love to see the girls giving straight chill. Also, have you done Ann’s season? Coz I’d be so interested to see how they treat her now I understand narcissism more - I feel like she was always either top 2 photos or bottom 2. Would be an interesting study!

I think the reason why they got away with all of this. .. It's because back in the day this was all acceptable. The models had no recourse if they wanted to work. I think Tyra went through this in her day... And wanted to put these girls through the same paces, she had to go through in order to prove she wanted to be a top model... Unfortunate and sad

Definitely my least favorite Cycle 5 shoot. I always forgot about it. Very wack pinup concept. They send Kyle home because she doesn't start drama. Very skippable episode. Also their gender expression obsession with Kim was weird, something they would probably reconsider saying today. Sure enough, her post-ANTM modeling was quite diverse.

I'm not sure how tight they laced these (their waists are teeny tiny in the photos, though not as dramatic on set), but anyone who's worn a corset knows that you have to breathe a little differently than MOST people typically do, and that it can take a little while to get used to. Clearly, most of these girls have never worn a corset before, so the stylist shouldve gone over breathing with them. Notice how the girls who had the least trouble were the ones with experience wearing corsets (like Jayla) and the more athletic ones (who already know how to breathe more efficiently, like Nik and Kim). That being said (don't come for me), it's EXTREMELY unlikely these corsets were fitted properly to the girls, so they should've definitely been laced in a way that was more comfortable.

6:14 I feel like dressing the models up as generic pin-up girls does not fit well with the Ford fusion. It would fit better with an old school 1950s 1960s Ford car. I feel like if you wanted to go pin up to sell the Ford fusion they should have dressed the models up as Rosie the rivertor. That would have worked so much better. Conceptually and it would look better with the car since they would look like a pin-up mechanic.
@TheTatumness11 ай бұрын
If I remember correctly, this was the first year the fusion was available and it was an anniversary launch which is why I think they went with modern Vargas girl designs to play on the vintage ones with the older cars. Jess says in a lot of these videos that the styling is tacky or costumey but it’s literally how people were dressing during the 2000s 😂
