Also, all of the games I mentioned (I think) are descendants of Dungeons and Dragons, which is where they get their combat system from (it's modified or changed for each game, but the idea is the same).

Well, being able to play as an asshat isn't really unique to this game. I think this one does it better than most, and it's different in the sense that you're definitely on the wrong side no matter what, and the only thing that changes is your approach to oppression. But still. Almost all RPGs offer some sort of 'evil' option.

Isometric is where it's at when you're supposed to control a party. Otherwise the gameplay tends to be designed around having your companions make a relatively small effect on the outcome, and/or gear towards hack'n-slash gameplay like in the later Dragon Age or "Twitcher" games. That's not to say Isometric makes combat good, but in an actual party game it's quite helpful.

This is absolutely worth a buy if you were ever a fan of the old Baldur's Gate games, Icewind Dale games, etc. There was enough content for me to sink 30h into the game without replaying, which I absolutely could do if I wanted to see the myriad of different game play choices you can make in this game and get a ton more game play out of. There is more content in this game than there was in your thumbed up Titanfall 2 WAB. Anyone on the fence who is a fan of the games I mentioned should absolutely feel safe in their purchase and give this unwarranted thumbs down a blind eye. I can't shake my head hard enough over this thumbs down.

What still bugs me about this thumb down is the fact that it's not like Tyranny was made for people who just want to shoot laz0rs at enemy flag carriers after a hard day at work. It is an isometric RPG which requires you to sink time into it and also approach it slightly different than action games. The combat can be either turn based or have an active pause system. With isometric RPG's atm it's as far as you can go really. Down-voting the game for using one of these two systems is kind of unfair, because you would have to downvote the entire genre. And lastly there is the fact that you give a thumb up to a game like Dead Age which is like 50x worse than Tyranny. Looks worse, is buggy, offers less choice, less customization. Overall it just blows compared to Tyranny, mostly in terms of COMBAT which i find horrid and tedious. And the only plus is that it is cheaper. That seems to be major factor?

So this RPG is not worth a buy? Are you kidding me? Classic combat system just vastly improved, awesome story with uncommon protagonist, loads of variety and customization. And you thumb it down... It's not my intention to sound like a dick but i just think you are sending a bad message here. If you say the game is good, don't thumb it down. This title deserves recognition and combat starts getting far more interesting when you unlock more abilities, "team-up" skills and more runes for your spells. You can't even learn all of the spells on a single playthrough bcuz of the choices you make. They lock you out from certain areas. Being able to manipulate spells like this is just unheard of in games these days. With runes you can change a firebolt into fireball. Or make it cover an entire area with fire over time effect, Or better yet make it bounce between enemies etc. Getting bored after few hours is really not experiencing the game at all. It's an RPG and it needs a bit of time to get in motion.

well it all comes down to this.. What to do as a reviewer, when you can see that the game is good, that lots of love went to it, but you simply don't like it. Most of reviewers will thumb it up. Mack will thumb it down. And I like that about him. Because it allows him to stay completely honest. To me, it is mostly irrelevant whether Mack thumbs a game up or down. I mean.. it is relevant but it is probably the least important thing to me when watching a review. What is important to me is WHY he thumbs it up or down. In this case, he thumbs it down because it simply wasn't for him (he even says so himself) and because he didn't get into it. That said, he only played it for 5.1 hours which I agree is very little for this game, but hey.. If he's that bored with it, then I guess it would be actually dishonest if he forced himself to play it more just for the sake of a review. I always viewed Mack as less of a pro game reviewer and more of simply a gamer who played a game and tells you his honest opinion. And I like that about him, because there is lots of reviewers on youtube, but very little people like that, who play a game and tell you their completely honest, completely biased opinion.

The combat is too ancient. Divinity Original Sin proves a classic RPG can have new and engaging combat. What you get from Tyranny though is an absolutely fabulous story. I'd recommend setting the dificulty all the way down to normal or even the easiest - just power through combat as if it's not part of the game and get set on a great adventure.

Had these types of game come out when I was younger and was just getting into video games I could definitely see myself spending countless hours playing stuff like this, Pillars of Eternity, Divinity Original Sin, and all the other very heavy text games. I used to absolutely love all the dialogue and character/world development in rpg games. Add on top of that the customization we now get with all the loot and stuff, amazing. Unfortunately I just don't seem to have the time or patience anymore to read through all the text with the hopes that I'll enjoy it. Huge shame. Not the games fault though.

0:59 - This. I spent hundreds of hours with Guild Wars, and even more with Icewind Dale, Neverwinter or Baldur series and they (WoW, GW - vs - ID, NN, BG) are practically separate genres, with entirely different format, type of Lore and experience. Tyranny is definitely not for everyone, but those enjoying old series from Obsidians or WIzards Coast will find it so much entertaining!

from every video I have seen I can't tell if this is true turn based like D&D (one round = 6 sec = one move & one action) or speed stat (units can act as soon as the previous actions are complete, each action takes variable time). I think the latter but every fight looks like chaos.
@WorthABuyreviews
@WorthABuyreviews 7 жыл бұрын
It's all real time but if you look at the icon above the characters heads you can see the ability in use and cooldown before you can use another one. Basically once an ability has been used you pause the game, select a new ability to use, select a target (do this for your entire party) unpause, wait until it's executed then rinse and repeat until you fall asleep. Great game, shame about the combat.
@308473mb
@308473mb 7 жыл бұрын
Everyone acts at once, but a combination of stats and the specific action you take determine when you can do something again. This includes auto-attacking which puts it somewhere between WoW and your tradtional turn-based game. There's tons of triggers you can set that make the game pause when x or y happens :) Sadly your guys will more often than not take the most ridiculous routes to the enemy, triggering tons of free attacks and more. The pathing isn't great :\

Mack, I have to say this. It looks like you're opinion is somewhat 'thought through' in a way I dislike. I enjoyed how open and hard you were able to express you're feelings and opinion about a game. The review you did on the Witcher 3 was spot on, but the reactions also did something to you. You now think about what you are going to say and I also hear a sense of anxiety in it. Just say what you think Mack, it is you're hard straight to the point opinion that I highly appreciated and enjoyed and so many with me think the same way. You are the only one that is able to criticize a game with a bit of humor and in the same time everything you say makes sense. I still love you Mack, but i also had to say this before we have to deal with a soft politically correct Mack. Explaining you're opinion is one thing, but stop excusing yourself, be the sharp Mack that we had before Witcher 3.

Posting this before Mac starts reviewing: The game is now free on the Epic store. I have not spent one single penny on the Epic store, yet I have over 60 games there. One of which I actually played. I am thinking that I will add this game to my Epic library and leave it untouched. I do - or rather - DID love Obsidian. I got the game for free because LOL - the crossed-out, original price (of this game on Epic) was (is?) $54.99 Canadian. I added it to my library out of spite. I'll never play it though. Hurray for me.

Yeah the last one Ive sorta struggled to play, on the surface its epic with tons of everything but when you actually playing it the combat feels very muddled. Almost every time its hard to see your characters and what they're doing amongst the enemies as they kinda heap together, I do wish the combat was full turn based as its hard to remember the cooldowns on everything so timing attacks or combos is extremely difficult, even setting debuffs or traps on enemies is hard as they move sooo fast they often move into melee range before your character can perform his ranged spell, just a timing mess that I couldnt get the hang of and the slow mo down setting didnt help enough tbh.

The main thing in RPG's is NOT combat! It's never been! You go back to ultima, early Elder Scrolls, the combat is all shit! It's about world building, immersion, creating your character, living your character. You want good combat, you go to games like Chivalry. RPG's have the complete package of gaming, but usually slack off on combat mechanics
@jeffvella9765
@jeffvella9765 7 жыл бұрын
The combat was shit in the early games but its 2016, delivering a shitty combat tagged with a price is a crime when you see indi games doing better. This is the mind set you have to have if you know what you are doing: Elder scrolls : Oblivion is an old but awesome rpg game with decent combat, fps/tps. Now they are making a new game, with equal rpg elements, equally good story but shitty combat and more expensive. (assuming you never played oblivion) if you had to choose to buy oblivion or tyranny which one would you buy? Oblivion would be a better game and it is cheaper since its older. This is how you tell if Tyranny is worth buying or not. The game is simply not up to standard to today's games. The idea that in the 1990's combat was not so important is bullshit because we are not living in 1990's. Stop judging games with a 26 year old standard and maybe someone would take you seriously.

I don't agree because Oblivion isnt really an RPG. It's an action RPG with some light RPG elements. Tyranny goes back to old school D&D. That's my point. D&D isnt really great combat, it's serviceable to the game you're playing. The notion of RPG's requiring good combat is something I do not agree with. Sure it helps the game's overall appeal, but it's not a requirement for this genre to work
@jeffvella9765
@jeffvella9765 7 жыл бұрын
"It's an action RPG with some light RPG elements." Lol "light RPG elements." So now a better RPG is called "not an RPG". in Oblivion even the swords could be forged, enchanted and boosted with several soul-gems to the point that even the weapons of your characters had rpg elements. "D&D isnt really great combat" That is why it is not worth a buy in today's standard. Would you buy an over priced pack-man like game?(2d etc) NO, so why would you buy an over priced D&D like game? @ Mack, Yes, I watched other you-tubers praising it and even make lets play of it, and it was as boring as fuck. I was really happy when you gave it a fair judgment and thumbed it down. Keep up the honesty and good work.

You ever played Morrowind? How does it compare to oblivion, they dumbed down a lot of RPG mechanics that made Morrowind such a classic to this date. I'm not saying Oblivion is a bad game, it's just not a very good RPG follow up to Morrowind. Anyway, my point has been made. Agree to disagree, I just have more leniency for a weaker combat if story, other mechanics and immersion make up for it.

After watching you complain about games being dumbed down in video after video, you now complain that this game is to complex and hard. wtf man! I admit I started of playing on hard and finished on easy(ier), because I found it more enjoyable not micro managing potions and crafting (which is wha you need to do on the harder modes), but this kind of depth is excatly what you say you want in a game. Also, if you only like first person games....why play anything else? And another thing, this game is fucking epic, and only gets better as you progess. Best story ive played through in years. Eh, I hate that aspect of real time combat having to be treated as turn based combat with constant pausing. It's something that really put me off when playing Pillars of Eternity. if it's gonna act like a turn based game just make into a turn based game or it's just going to break the flow of the game and that just.... urgh, it gets so frustrating and breaks the immersion of the game. Divinity: Original Sin did the whole real time to turn based perfectly imo. And to some extent even Dragon Age: Origins did that really well too as the game could for example be set to pause only when firing off aimed spells or abilities.

Hey Mac, so Steam has the big picture overlay configuration with enhanced controller support for the Steam Controller. I've contacted them about using this feature to provide control remapping for the keyboard in cases where devs fail to include rebinding support. It'd be great to get someone with a bigger voice and platform to touch on this small issue, or remind Valve what a huge asset they could provide with a relatively small change to preexisting rebinding setups built into Steam. thanks

Is there no way to give your A.I companions pre-set tactics to save on the micromanagement? In Dragon Age: Origins you could set your party members to heal the tank when his health gets low, your tank to aggro enemy's, characters to support him etc etc Many fights I could effectively let play out themselves with minimal input. If this game doesn't have this function I could see myself getting pretty frustrated constantly pausing

I love it...i actually heard that it stems from the "Jagged Alliance" games...Black Isle Studios took that system for the Baldur's Gate Saga and all the following infinity engine games, which set the standard for a lot of games.

I actually liked the game a lot. Overall. But there are two things I found disappointing - the game is way too short and the ending is underwhelming. I mean you get to have those badass weapons taken from the corpses of all the hotshots and bahm! game over! No chance to actually use them in battle. And they don't even let you deal with the main baddy, the Tyrant! Probably leaving it for a DLC or a sequel. Micromanaging does make combat slow. But I found AI to be pretty decent. So if you build strong characters and a proper team, you can just leave the combat to AI. Then it's a blast, watching your team shred enemies to pieces peppered with those awesome magic effects! However, I do see your points, Mack. My brother, RPG fan, actually didn't finish the game. He got bored. So the game is a bit hardcore I guess.

So Tyranny, great RPG elements spoiled by horrible out dated combat, such a shame they went this way, it would have been so much better as a proper turn based game. It will appeal to many old school RPG fans but for me it was just way too slow, I expected more for £35 in 2016, instead I got the 1990's which is why i thumbed it down, grab it in the sales though as it's not a bad game at all and has some great features.

If the combat were turn based, battles probably would take even longer. I prefer turn based combat over real time with pause, but if you set up the auto pause just right, it almost plays like it's turn based. At first I found the combat frustrating, but once I got the right combination of AI and auto pause, I find the combat quite good. I set the AI to defend self in case I forget to give them orders they won't sit there and take a beating without fighting back and to only use basic attacks so they don't waste spells. Off the top of my head, the auto pause settings I enabled are: on spotting enemy/trap, on combat start, when someone finishes using an ability, when a target is destroyed and if someone's health is critically low. This way, like I said, it pretty much plays out like turn based combat. If I order a mage to cast a spell, it pauses when they're done so I can order them to cast another spell or just use basic attacks. If someone kills their target, it pauses so I can issue a new target for them to attack. The only thing I wish it had was an option to pause when an ability or spell's cool down has finished because you have to keep an eye on them to know when they're ready to be used again. I'm glad to see the return of isometric RPGs. I don't care much for action RPGs, which 3rd person and first person RPGs typically fall under. I don't care for 3rd person perspective at all, it's too clunky. First person perspective for an RPG is good if it's done right, but there have been very few good first person RPGs. Deus Ex (the original) and Fallout New Vegas are pretty much the only two that come to mind.

You needed to have played Baldur's Gate in the late 90's in order to understand the combat, why it was made this way and why it is great for many people. You can't really analyze this game without proper Infinity engine RPGs background, sorry.

I think I know what your problem with the game was: there are too many options. Pillars of Eternity was another one like it. They have like 20 classes and all of them have a vast and complex skill system, and it's just overwhelming; you can't bother managing every aspect of leveling and skill use. I pick a mage for your character for a reason: that's the only class I'm willing to invest in. Screw the warrior, archer, and the chanter of the Oompa-Loompas shite, that's not why I'm into RPGs. I know I can just lower the difficulty and pick characters into the crew based on other factors (like how interesting they seem), but that's just now how it's supposed to be done.

I like it I finished a playtrough its great it was worth the money for me. For me immersion is everything and I could immerse myself great there. For that there few rpg that break my immersion no matter if there isometric or not. Gameplay is not that important either way in the end I will still do the same thing over and over and over for so much time that nothing makes it good but with immersion at least I can imagine that I do something different.
