Playing with the top rounded corners instead of the point is a HUGE part of SRV's technique - playing a song like "Dirty Pool" or "Tin Pan Alley" would be next to impossible using the point - the corners give less resistance and easier release and allow you to do rakes with much more fluidity.

Back in the late 80's when I first started to learn guitar... I went with using the pick at roughly 90 degrees from the small end. I'm sure I thought that's what Stevie did. Always felt natural to me.

So I'm assuming that you all hold it flat to the string right?

There's some interview footage of SRV talking about how he holds his pick and why. I think he was just able to get a wider range of tones out of it.

It's a bigger, smoother sound at the expense of speed and ease of playing

SRVS 4x12 is wired.. The other cab from 1968 that 8 x10 was converted to 2 x 15 so its getting EV 15s tonight and maybe even wired tonight depends on how the grill goes back on for me and behaves. Then both those 68 cabs sport EVSs and can handle the Dumble. The Dumble I want to push those cabs is 50 watts and then I want to drive another 150 watt head on the 2 x 15 cab to get that SSS JANGLE out of the 150 watt head and it can drive both the 4 x 12 and the 2 x 15 cab via Direct box..... Now both those cabs will be wired to remove the backs and still be able to play them. Lay them over or set them aside the cabinet .. Lets them breath and really opens that sound up. But hearing is everything you gotta hear and play it in person to know without a doubt.

Chris... the answer = you hear comments about it because you have far more pick sticking out than SRV did. While both of are striking with a combination of the side/butt end....SRV still had very little pick actually showing, he was very "choked up" on the pick. Chris you appear as though you are holding the pick by just the tiniest part of the tip, and lots of pick is showing.

I've been using Fender medium 346 picks for about 35 years - they are triangular so you have three more rounded corners.

I use four different thicknesses, depending on what I am playing...thicker the pick, the more fretwork, thinner gor faster strumming, chugging...

Yes I tried different thicknesses for different things, but eventually settled on mediums as it gives a good coverall for everything. It also influenced my opinion when I learnt that many great players that I liked, like Stevie, but also George Benson used a medium gauge. Pat Metheny uses a fender thin gauge, but I didn't like the sound myself.@@stinkypinkeee5085
