In this video I have the pleasure of chatting with my colleague Tzvi Novick at the University of Notre Dame. Professor Novick completed a B.A. from Yale University with a degree in philosophy. After a very brief but instructive legal career, and an MA in Hebrew Bible from Yeshiva University, he enrolled in the PhD program in Religious Studies at Yale, from which he graduated in 2008 with a focus on early rabbinic Judaism (ca. 2nd to 6th c.). Professor Novick has taught at Notre Dame ever since, on subjects ranging from the Bible to modern Judaism and post-Holocaust literature and theology.
In this video we discuss Jewish perspectives on the New Testament. We discuss Judaism at the time of Jesus as well as after the advent of Christianity. Dr. Novick elucidates the Jewish context(s) behind the New Testament and how an understanding of Judaism can help us understand the New Testament.
Dr. Novick is the author of "An Introduction to the Scriptures of Israel
History and Theology" published by Eerdmans Press which can be found here: www.eerdmans.com/978146745059...

Gabriel, you are very good at moderating these conversations! Just as you think of different "tangents" etc., your conversations - this one especially - bring a lot to mind. There's a couple questions I'd like to ask you, either as 'fodder' for your interviews here, or as a commentary disguised as a question, but for another time perhaps. So, another thing is that I sometimes wish these conversations on this youtube channel were 2-3 or even 4 hours long, but it's probably better overall that you keep them close to an hour. And that brings me back to my first point, you do a good job of both introducing the different topics but also covering the highly interesting points within whatever topic you and your guest are on. This is how I feel about this episode at least. Keep it up and thanks for bringing these solid scholars on. As a layman, and a Jehovah's Witness, I have an intense interest on the Scriptures, and it's nice to see the different 'intersections' that these conversations come upon. For instance, the Dead Sea Scrolls are a real blessing, and I cannot prove but at least suspect, that the discovery of them is similar to 2 Chronicles 34:14 where Jehovah seems to have caused "the book of Jehovah's Law given by the hand of Moses" to be found.

Happened to listen in on St. Stephen's day (December 27, in the Eastern Orthodox calendar), way more than fair answer to my curiosity of what the Jewish reading of all that could be. Thank you for the happy reference! [new year mark]

I agree, it could be better. But the auto generated youtube subtitles are pretty good. Of course the downside of relying on subtitles is you actually have to have eyes on the screen, rather than listening to it podcast style. Regardless, thanks Gabriel for this.
